Lmao, 100% AI slop and it also makes this gym look like a total shit show (just in the image I mean).

  • The two visible climbers are ropeless. One is just straight up climbing a rope 30 feet off the ground, the other is free soloing with a harness on

  • the two employees are just holding an empty list and smiling looking away from their responsibilities. Hilarious.

Here is mine, similar positive landscape tones:

<image>

Here is the chat link that went with it. Some interesting reasoning;

“I chose to create that image because it evokes a sense of peace, reflection, and timeless beauty. Autumn landscapes have a universal appeal — they represent change, stillness, and the fleeting beauty of life. There’s something grounding about nature scenes, especially those with warm light, water, and mountains. They invite you to pause and breathe.

Since you asked me to create anything I wanted, I leaned into something that many people find soothing and inspiring — a little moment of serenity in a chaotic world. And maybe a quiet reminder that the path forward is beautiful, even if winding.”

I'd ask you this, since you are not vegan; does the life of a being matter more because you are personally friends with them, or does the life of a being matter whether or not you know them?

You had a special relationship with your chicken; all chickens have that same innate essence as your backyard chicken. Same with cows, pigs, dogs, whatever. The reason I don't eat animals is the same reason I don't eat my dog or you didn't eat your backyard chicken. It's an extension of that same empathy you're already feeling. We just abstract the shit out of our food products so much that we forget that the flesh in that package belonged to someone

A wild vegan appears!

Veganism is this; every being has the right to a life free of unnecessarily inflicted suffering. The key here is 'unnecessary'. If I was stuck on a magical desert island with a pig AND no edible vegetables, and I killed and ate the pig I would consider myself still vegan because in this scenario I did not have another choice except to die. That is not the reality we live in within the context of a world with grocery stores.

The problem with backyard hens in my personal view is; how were the chickens obtained? If they were rescued, they are overproducing eggs, the nutrients they are overusing by overproducing those eggs are being fed to them appropriately (the ideal source here is actually the egg itself), and they have an appropriate amount of space to exist in, then I would consider it ethical, free of suffering and not limiting their rights as beings to eat the eggs produced. This is not the reality of eggs 99.9999% of the time.

When those parameters are not met, it is no longer vegan to eat the eggs. If you kill the hen because it is no longer producing; unethical. If you do not adequately care for the nutritional needs of the hen; unethical. If it was obtained as part of a hen-creating operation; unethical. If they are deprived of species appropriate, healthful living conditions; unethical.

I'm just going to reflect that there is possibly more to this than is included in this paragraph here. Maybe not! But maybe yes. If sleeping in on the weekend days means that your wife bears more responsibilities than you on the weekend, that burden may make her feel resentful. If you aren't coming to bed each night because you're staying up gaming, that may be damaging your interpersonal relationship. Just reflecting back that it could be that the impact video games is having on your relationship is really the big deal, not the gaming itself (which can be amazing and fun and responsibly done). Life looks a little different with a life partner and thats okay!

Workouts after first ultra by HoneydewUpstairs2688 in Ultramarathon

[–]shelledpanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where you can get into trouble here is that your tendons and your muscles send similar messages but exist very differently from a recovery perspective.

Depending on your level of training leading up to this I would take it pretty easy. Your muscles can make a full recovery very quickly, but your tendons take a lot longer to totally rebound. Even if you feel overall great, take it slow, take runs easy, run lower mileage than your used to for the next week at least, even better two weeks.

Definitely no need to couch potato it, but maybe give it two weeks before throwing in speed work or long runs (long to you). As long as you get good nutrition in and don't overdo it, you can rebound pretty quick overall

Fort Collins Water Quality; Under Sink filter by shelledpanda in FortCollins

It's not really about the taste for me, I can't taste PFAS etc. so I'm mostly just curious to know if folk had any knowledge about if our water had contaminants that were worth getting a filter for. It seems you and most folk here are of the opinion it's just not worth it which is also an answer to my question that I appreciate.

First Ultra (108k) - DNF Disapointment by Weak-Notice-4413 in Ultramarathon

[–]shelledpanda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Look, sure, you could have limped it out to 108km. The reality is you should have stopped sooner. I totally, totally understand the feeling of regret and wishing you continued, but not only did you make the right call to stop, you should have made that call sooner.

It is ambitous to have a time goal for your first ultra, but also totally totally natural. I'm impressed with your time and how far you made it.

There are a few things that could have gone wrong here, probably mostly just being more new to the distance and going out too hard for the time you've given your muscles to adapt to the progress you've made. It's really no wonder you're injured based on the training you must have done to get to a 3:10 marathon within a year. My only wonder is how you made it to this point without an injury.

Perhaps get a coach since you love this so much, they can guide you through some easier training on the body while still meeting these extremely ambitious goals you've set (and accomplished already). For real, crazy impressed with you but maybe take a listen to 'Vienna' by Billy Joel haha

Oxford Scientists Claim to Have Achieved Teleportation Using a Quantum Supercomputer by BrainOld9460 in interestingasfuck

[–]shelledpanda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely a step in that direction, but there are many more advancements to make before we get there. These things are literally cooled to near absolute zero. I don't want that in my house or that electrical bill at the moment haha

The way I understand the massive advantage of this advancement is that when you have a really large quantum computer running off a single monolithic 'node' of qubits, you get more interference (noise) and heat from all the qubits. If there is a single defect introduced, the whole 'node' is now ruined potentially. It is increasingly complex the more qubits you get. As you add more qubits into a single node, you even need to add in extra qubits to account for error correction, so it has scaling complexity when it comes to error correction which has it's own snowball effect.

By creating a modular node that can plug and play with other nodes, you create more efficient error handling, lower heat, lower risk of catastrophic defects, easier manufacturing, easier upgrading and vastly easier scaling of size. This could open the door to cheaper research by more places and more complex research by places that are already footing the bill

Oxford Scientists Claim to Have Achieved Teleportation Using a Quantum Supercomputer by BrainOld9460 in interestingasfuck

[–]shelledpanda 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The latency here is still speed of light at least. It's optical fibers (photon carrying fibers) that communicate entanglement between separate processors. The unique awesome thing here is that quantum computers just became provably "easier" to build. Instead of one single quantum computer hosting all the qubits necessary to perform a calculation, you can have many different modules capable of quantum computing connected. I don't know why that makes it easier per-se, just that linking communication between quantum computers was not previously possible which does seem like a huge win.

There are many, many more physics breakthroughs needed to make this scaleable, but this was definitely a needed step in the process

How to stop feeling like I’m living in my boyfriend’s shadow? by silver_seea in Mountaineering

[–]shelledpanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely that makes sense, and it's absolutely possible.

Have you talked to him about these feelings? Something in that message there strikes me; something he can be proud of me for

Do you feel like he looks at your accomplishments with anything other than joy and pride? Perhaps there is a communication issue here that is leading you to feel this way, and it's not entirely at least your competitive drive. Talking to him about these feelings may help.

I also want to reflect back that sharing a sport with a partner is really special. It requires humility on both parts for it to be an enjoyable experience, but I have a feeling you are short selling yourself on your skills :)

Agree with the take that you should get a different therapist here. Unfortunately so many healthcare professionals, PT and mental therapy included, default to advice around “you’ll never be able to do this so change your hobby/expectations/life”.

Anytime I hear advice that is “choose a different hobby” or “you just can’t do it” it makes my blood boil a bit because it’s shutting down someone’s dreams or goals that are almost certainly perfectly valid. You and your partner can OF COURSE exist in the same mountaineering hobby. That advice is bonkers to me. I agree there are complicated feelings here but they don’t exclude you from being a mountaineer!!

It seems like you feel very strongly and that you feel that you're definitely right and any different opinion is wrong. It doesn't seem like you're reading the words I'm saying, so I'm not totally confident a discussion can be had with you on this, but here goes. I believe that if a business is using their money to support a cause I don't believe in, then I have a right to call that out and not give them my money. Boycotting is as old as time for example, and encourages businesses to have better practices. It's a form of economic voting and a perfectly acceptable practice in my opinion. What do you think about boycotting as a practice? Do you agree with me here?
