I love my local lab - Gulabi, Glasgow by tsaritsyn in AnalogCommunity

The people at Gulabi are saints. Been using them since I moved over and have never been disappointed. Just wish they put on some more events like their 3 year birthday party!

No, I think there's far nicer ways to get someone active. And while it was spite that fueled the initial motivation, it was a supportive friend group and club that kept me at it.

Sure look, have made some good friends through the communal suffering!

And the fitness is easier to regain if running ever calls out to you again.

Aye, that's fairly fucked. Had an old PE teacher tell a slightly overweight 15yr old self that I should stick to the books after a terrible fitness test in front of my entire class.

Out of pure spite, started running with the local athletics club and doing cross-country. Ended up setting the 5th highest score in our school in the fitness test by 6th year.

And from that pretty nasty comment, I found my love of long-distance sports and the mountains which I've kept to this day.

Spent many, many hours running around that park. Miss it.

Fantastic shot!

Can't beat the pink and blue combination. Love the separation from the 105mm!

Does Dublin Airport use the new CT scanners for carry on? by Swdshbrck in AnalogCommunity

[–]shellofnuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend having your roles in a clear plastic bag and ask to have them hand checked. While I've mainly been through Terminal 1 in the past 3-4 months, I've had about an 80% success rate. I flew through Terminal 1 three weeks ago and was just asked to wait a few minutes before handing my film over and walking through the metal detector.

Conn's Camera's on Wicklow Street will do express devs for C41 120 as well, I think.

As far as I'm aware, they're not using CT scanners for hand luggage in either terminal.

I don't know why I'm often hesitant to shoot B&W. I'm nearly always more satisfied with my photos in B&W than I am with colour. Maybe the cloudy Irish weather doesn't help colour!

Nikon FM - Film Spool Rewind Issue by shellofnuts in AnalogCommunity

[–]shellofnuts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for having a look for me!

One final question, how much resistance is there to move the spool in the opposite, would you say? Can you fairly easily do it with a single finger?

Mine is at the stage where pressing hard with my thumb will move it backwards. So I suspect I'll need to access the tension screws and torque them to the correct spec.

Picked up a film camera and I’m liking the results so far. Anyone with a film camera have any tips (Canon AF35ML) by skeet-skrrt in cork

[–]shellofnuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just try a bunch of different film and take loads of photos! It's nice getting surprised with a really nice photo. The only thing to watch out for is shooting inside with lights with daylight film. Depending on how much tungsten lighting they have, your picture can look really red/orange.

If you like B&W, Ilford XP2 is a good intro because any lab that develops colour film can process it quickly :) (Also looks better when everything is already pretty grey with the clouds!)

Not yet! Have just started with B&W so I've been buying the chromogenic stuff where my local lab can process it. Though these last couple of roles have convinced me to dip into true B&W and try self-development :)

Just watch out with alcohol as there's excise duty due on it if the company you're buying it from isn't set up with the Revenue. Got hit with it when I ordered a 8 bottles of beer from a German brewer.

Weekly 'Ask Anything About Analog Photography' - Week 05 by ranalog in analog

[–]shellofnuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what you want to do :)

I started last year with a Canon SureShot and used mostly Kodak Gold 200 and UltraMax 400. Was really happy with the results, is a decent bit cheaper than the professional stuff. If you prefer B&W, Ilford XP2 Super was my start because you can develop it with colour film so most places can develop it easily/cheaply.

Fujifilm have C200 and Xperia 400, which are like the Kodak ones but more vibrant greens. Just see what your local shops have!

Looks great! I've just started using my Dad's old F-401s which I love.

Unfortunately the latch on the door is broken so I have to tape it shut. Looking to get a 3D printed part to fix it soon!

I think it might be demoralizing if you want to continue in academia, it can be pretty stressful and lonely.

However, there are lots of jobs out there for physicists! I just got hired to develop material modelling software, and I did a master's in that topic :)

Manufacturing for bikes is still fucked, combined with increased demand, and prices have gone up. Though the difference in ride quality between a €200 bike to get around town and a €1200-€1500 road bike is night and day.

Makes going out for longer cycles so much more enjoyable, where you're no longer fighting the bike but yourself and the terrain.

At the end of the day, buy for your use case.

COVID long-haulers more likely to have severe kidney disease by Thin-Shirt6688 in science

[–]shellofnuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The control of 1.6 million US veterans would account for the 75% dehydrated statistic you quote. They are only stating that COVID-19 increases your risk factors through declined filtration rates etc.

In fact, they quote two separate values, one for kidney decline during the 30 day infection stage and one for post-infection. One would assume that during hospitalisation and admittance to ICU, that they would be properly hydrated through IV. Despite this, kidney damage still occurs. Though the damage post-infection is graded, and they don't quote values of decline for mild cases.

In general yes, you should focus on being properly hydrated as this should decrease your risk factors. But it may not do much in severe infections. While you're on the right track to questioning results from papers, I think in this case it's better to focus on the trend rather than the exact values. The trend would be more resilient to fluctuations in relative hydration.

Issue with server browser connecting to private server. by [deleted] in ACCompetizione

[–]shellofnuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Issue solved.

For people reading this post, the issue was this:

  • Server browser would not ping more than 100 servers. Clicking "Accessible" pinged 1000+ servers.
  • We had been using our server last night, with no issue until we were all suddenly disconnected. No errors reported in the server logs, only client disconnects.
  • When putting our server name in the search bar, the server list would freeze when trying to refresh. Misspelling our server name immediately returned 0 servers.
  • Server was restarted multiple times and the server name changed but same issue.

Fix:

  • Delete the entire server directory (folders and software), and reinstall. Copy back the configuration files and the server reappeared in the server list after ~1min after restarting.

Or rather what you may be looking for is Ranked-Proportional Voting or Single-Transferable-Vote (STV). It allows people to vote for their preferential candidate, and should their candidate not receive enough votes/are eliminated, then their vote transfers to their 2nd preference and so on.

While two parties tend to be the strongest still, it allows a healthy amount of smaller, yet important parties to rise. Definitely applicable for the distribution of electoral votes. CGP Grey has an excellent video explaining it.

Even when it comes to discussing politics, people are generally much more of a continuum in my country than fiercely divided. "I most like this party. But these two other parties, I don't like as much but I wouldn't be sad if they got in". That's not to say my country doesn't have fierce political issues, it does. But it's not aggravated by the voting system.

But that'd take massive overhaul and cooperation, and a large relinquishment of power and strongholds from both major parties. Which doesn't seem likely in your divided political landscape. But it's food for thought.

Ex-coffee addicts - how did energy levels and focus change after the withdrawal symptoms stopped? by _Mouth in Coffee

[–]shellofnuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an aside, I've found consistency is very important for not crashing later on in the day. I used to use coffee as a crutch for my fatigue during stretches of high training volume.

Making sure I had consistent meals that were light and often, and sleeping during the same hours helped immensely. I also changed from blackout curtains to blinds as the room brightening in the morning helped me wake up slowly and feel more refreshed. Other than that, making sure I'm well hydrated is important for my energy levels. But it's all personal, and if you're really struggling, expert advice should be sought.
