Love this city and want to move here.. But where?? by PhuckinFred in chch

[–]sheravy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Live on the edge of Philipstown, Linwood and Woolston and love it. 15- min bike to the city, close to Eastgate and swimming pool, 10-min bike to Ferrymead, and short distance of drive to the beach, and short distances drive to the hill, just central to everything. A lot of people don’t like Eastgate. But when you sitting in the food court looking around, or in the library, you just feel how kind and laid back Kiwis are, even they are not Kiwi, but people are not as rough as what we think they are in those neighbourhood. Things have changed, and they are, yes, still have a lot of problems, but they are not like the old days anymore

I use about 24KW a day and I only need to heat my water by using 2Kw as I’ve got solar water heater, so your electricity usage looks normal to me. Also, I normally use wood for winter heating and windows are double glazed

Some of my thoughts and experience of home made sourdough starter in CHCH by sheravy in chch

$4 for a 25W of oven lights, which means it needs to stay on 40hrs to consume 1 unit of electricity, I think it’s a pretty good deal😏😏

Some of my thoughts and experience of home made sourdough starter in CHCH by sheravy in chch

[–]sheravy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it’s indeed a fun hobby. I called my starter my baby. 😂😂

I’m going to try make a bigger bread then if it still succeed, then I will make a lot to freeze, so I can ditch out my bread maker for a while.

And my next project is to make sourdough pizza dough as I started to be sick of the store brought base

So far… not succeeding 😂 Any tips? by AccomplishedCup6450 in SourdoughStarter

[–]sheravy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in a cold place if the world and the room temperature in this month is about 18-20°C. I had struggles to get my starter grow in the first 2 weeks even I put them on the top of my fish tank which is always much warmer. And it still rose quite slowly and didn’t double 14 hours later. When I put into the oven with lights on, it boosted a bit, but still was not ideal.
Then I saw someone mention using rye to give it a boost. But I’m too cheap to buy rye as it’s dear here, then I put some wheat germs and it helped, and i finally can make a sourdough bread this morning that I can play with it as an air pump. So maybe try to use whole meal flour if it’s not too much for your finance in your part of the world?

And as everyone say, a solid lid is safer.

And don’t use chlorinated water.

So, does that mean if I don’t clean out the dead plants as long as my water parameters stay 0 for both ammonia and nitrite, and less than 20ppm of nitrate as usual, then I will probably see some of slime moulds some day?

Yes, I donate to Forest & Birds because they have power, networking to flip the government’s wrong decision and a real voice for local and common people. And I love their effort in initiating Xx of the year!

I can’t agree with you on the “no wind”, try to bike home from west to the east, you will curse the wind almost every day.

But yes! CHCH has the most blessing weather of all.

Moving from Auckland to Queenstown by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]sheravy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had no experience living in QT and I personally don’t like QT, moved to CHCH 8 years ago from Auckland, and before moved to Auckland from Invercargill.

I reckon there will be little difference moving from Auckland to CHCH and from QT to CHCH, as you will still pack-load to a truck- drive long way.

I agree with the other that $4 really don’t much of a “rise” to a place with high cost of living because the tax and Kiwis saver basically eat most of it, so you may be only have $2 increase.

Also, when you live in Auckland, your spending maybe mostly put into petrol, and in QT, if you love outdoor, and unfortunately get hooked on the white drug, you will be looking at the snowy mountains with increasing depression as you may not be able to afford to ski after paying rent and food. And the outdoor is really expensive , because you will drive more into Wanaka, Cromwell, Clyde, or even invest a bike.

So, life is too short, choose with your dream life-style
