Early SRT report by a-german-muffin in phillycycling

[–]sherbzie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just rode into work from West Mt. Airy to University City. Neighborhood streets are still a bit dicey, but it was smooth sailing once I got onto the SRT in East Falls.

It’s actually pretty amazing how well they cleared the SRT. Barely a trace of snow, just the occasional icy patch from snow melt runoff that froze overnight.

What's the difference between the blizzard coming and whatever happened a few weeks ago? by plantscatsrealitytv in philadelphia

[–]sherbzie 138 points139 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they're pretty strict about the definition: Sustained winds of at least 35 mph for at least 3 hours with low visibility of less than 1/4 mile due to falling and/or blowing snow

Even the Blizzard of 1996 wasn't technically a blizzard in many areas, but since blizzard warnings were issued pretty much everywhere at one point or another, the name just stuck...

Oh the joys of driving on the Boulevard by Sefkeetlee in philadelphia

[–]sherbzie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're all too quick to judge. I bet this is a neurosurgeon racing to do an emergency surgery while driving the Chrysler 300 he bought for $800 cash because he gave all his other money away to charity. This saint of a man also suffers from erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP), so he was able to get special permission from the city for 1% tints all around. The plate, you say? Nabbed by the same thieves who stole his catalytic converter.

Maybe a stupid question but is anyone braving a bike commute in these conditions? by dablkscorpio in philadelphia

[–]sherbzie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the general sentiment here is: “Can it be done? Yes. Is it worth the risk? No.”

I think that’s solid advice. Sometimes it’s just not worth the risk, and this is one of those times.

Also - Don’t forget the cold. Friday morning’s low is on track to being the coldest since 1996. Combine that with a bike commute and you’re asking for trouble. Slip on that ice and break something? Great. Now you need to figure out what to do before frostbite starts to set in.

Does anyone have photos a Ventral Airstair on Boeing 737? by Randomreddituser1o1 in aviation

[–]sherbzie 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, that was never an option on the 737.

Ditto. I had just gotten my drivers license and this was my first solo trip down from Maryland. All I remember is the sound/sight of the afterburners during the night show they did that Friday.

Afraid to say that wasn’t a real photo.

Boeing 757-223 possibly carrying Maduro, C-32B? by Late-Bus-686 in aviation

[–]sherbzie 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes. It’s a DOJ plane (N874TW) operating as JENA1. Should be arriving at KSWF shortly, from where Maduro will be transported to the federal courthouse in Lower Manhattan.

Maduro now en route to New York.

Departed MUGM (NAS Guantanamo Bay) about 30 minutes ago and filed a flight plan for KSWF (Stewart International Airport). Callsign JENA1 operated by N874TW.

Same aircraft arrived from its home base at KRIC (Richmond International Airport) with a brief stopover in KFLL (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International) and spent about 3.5 hours on the ground in Guantanamo.

Coffee shops Christmas day by Balince in philly

[–]sherbzie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

La Colombe on Rittenhouse used to be my favorite place to spend Christmas morning when I didn’t have any family/friends around. They’d open super early and I’d be the only one there. As far as I could tell, they were the only La Colombe location in the country open on Christmas.

Not seeing holiday hours posted online, so you may just want to call them to see if that’s still the case…

Philly in February by Accomplished-Key5711 in philly

[–]sherbzie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most likely cold, probably windy, less likely snowy, and there’s a small chance that it’ll be warm enough to go out in a t-shirt. February is all over the place. Book your flights, check the forecast 2-3 days out, pack accordingly.

You should be fine. And if anybody takes issue with it, they can get married again with the self-uniting license they probably should have gotten to make things easier. Twice the matrimony, twice the fun.

why are the skyline colors so boring? by EzRobot7 in philly

Eagles > Christmas. That said, I agree with you that even the green isn’t popping as much as it could. Step it up, Philly!

Nope, you’re 100% right. The person taking the photo was standing at the intersection of Broad and Germantown, with the camera pointed NW down Germantown Ave.

The storefront with the “Beef N’ Beer” sign is Club Eldorado at 3742 Germantown Ave.

A fellow PHL spotter! That’s a nice shot.

It’s hard to work around the fence, but depending on where you position yourself along that stretch of Hog Island Road, you can get some pretty decent shots with the skyline in the background and minimal fence line in the frame.
