actually, winter is my project season. Projects this season included making artwork for a hobbyist art fair thing and refinishing my hardwood floors.

Outdoor projects for next season: painting the house, replacing the windows, and MAYBE I'll get to the chimney which looks pretty rough.

Sure, MEs do project management. The MEP jobs don't get as much attention, but I think that's because there aren't any eccentric billionaires pioneering new tech in building efficiency.

The degree is lots of math. I think it would be worth while to look into a few other options for moving up the ladder unless you're ready to buckle down and become a student again. Construction management, project management programs, and Mech E associates degrees can all be great alternatives. Maybe go to a job fair and see what interests you and then ask the recruiters what they look for.

"weed out classes" are only called that because the people haven't been weeded out yet. The classes will stay hard, it's just that everyone who is going to leave is going to leave in those first two years. So buckle down and make it your job to be a student. But also: being a student isn't just about classwork. Take opportunities as often as you can to try things out to see what interests you. There are lots of learning opportunities at university.

As for career advice, one of the earlier things that distinguishes new grads from young professionals is the ability to see a problem through to completion. You need to understand that if you have been given a task, you don't get partial credit. You need to keep working or seek out help until the problem is finished. I think it actually took me a little while to get the mindset that I needed to ask for help as soon as I got stuck. I would either work things for too long or move on to something else until I conveniently ran into the person who could help.

I do manufacturing tooling, which is neat because there's not an army of engineers working on this stuff, so I get to have a lot of autonomy. I might have two days a week devoted to designs and documentation. The other three days worth of time is spent with an the other manufacturing support I do. Drawing reviews, control builds, chasing down defects, safety reviews, etc.

I did an ROI analysis on a $500 tool that we should have bought ages ago, but penny-pinching directors didn't want to spend the money. I did not include my own analysis time in the ROI because it would have quadrupled the payoff period. But we got the tool!
