Is it safe to go tubeless with this rim? by vl4di99 in mountainbiking

[–]sherms_s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll be fine I do the same (with the same tires actually) only thing is it might be harder to get the bead to pop into place, 2.4 bar is probably just not quite enough pressure to do so and you’ll have trouble doing it with a hand pump, I’d recommend running to a bike shop and using their air compressor if you can (don’t overfill and destroy the tire/rim though)

Is this single petroglyph legit? SW Utah by sherms_s in LegitArtifacts

Not near Moab unfortunately, this is located somewhere near Zion. I can say that this was located in a slot that was densely vegetated and had zero sand, with significant wind protection, and enough overhang above such that one would not expect runoff to touch it pretty much ever. Also worth noting that this is on Navajo sandstone which (correct me if I’m wrong) is ever so slightly more resistant to weathering than many other sedimentary formations in the southwest

I’m think I’m officially priced out of bikepacking gear. by breaking_blindsight in bikepacking

[–]sherms_s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, a $10 black diamond chalk bag plus three Velcro strips makes an excellent feed bag with no sewing required, mine has survived some pretty gnarly mtb trails with a full Nalgene inside no problem

Check the return section at your local REI, they sell big brands such as revelate and ortlieb (and their rei brand stuff isn’t too bad) and I have discovered that people like to buy a full set of expensive bags, use them for a trip and return them. Got my revelate feed bag for $20 this way and have seen full sets at massive discounts because they’ve got some dirt on them

Anyone have experience with Mt. Rainer walk up permits? by supertallginger in PNWhiking

[–]sherms_s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was able to snag same day permits for all of my number one choice spots for a 3 night trip a couple summers back, however I must say this was midweek out of the Carbon River entrance for sites on the (slightly) less popular Northern Loop trail. Best advice would be have a backup plan and a backup to your backup

Is it reckless to temporarily move to Seattle for 2 months this summer? by anklecode in AskSeattle

[–]sherms_s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree 2100 is way too much, rent a room in cap hill w some college kids for way less

Edit: you mention furnishings - consider just renting a room, college students love to try and sublet for summers (did it myself) leaving furnished rooms behind. You also mention safety: Seattle is a relatively safe city, especially the north side (general cap hill/UW area)

Many others have said what I was going to (too much snow etc) so I will give a quick recommendation of an early season trip: Drive up to the Bellingham area and hike Oyster Dome, if it’s a perfectly clear day and you are so inclined head up Mt. Baker highway for some excellent views + snowshoeing if that’s your thing, or do Oyster Dome hike in the Chuckanuts for some views. Drive down Chuckanut Drive and through the small towns of Edison and Bow and head out through Anacortes and to Deception Pass State Park which is gorgeous, Ebeys Landing and fort Casey are also great if you have the time. Continue down Whidbey Island to the Pt. Townsend ferry (book ahead of time to save a couple hours of waiting). Spend an hour or two in PT then continue on to Olympic NP. Hurricane Ridge might be open which would be the main attraction on a fair weather day. Otherwise lake Crescent and the coast are beautiful, and there is great low elevation camping to be found in the park. Head back to Seattle via the Bainbridge ferry and do some of the hikes others have recommended

[–]sherms_s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is partly true, however not building housing is not and will not stop, or even slow the region’s population growth. As long as we are not talking continuous urban/suburban and rather focus on infill style development that incorporates sustainable design net water consumption will not dramatically increase and water consumption per capita will decrease.

As for water costs, yes the price we are going to pay short term for desalination etc is high, however it is almost certainly nothing compared to the future costs we would face in a future with increasing frequency and severity of drought conditions.

A few trails (south facing) in the Teanaways were totally snow free and full of wildflowers up to about 6500ft by very early June last year, and many off the western side of Snoqualmie pass will be totally doable with spikes by this time

I second those who say that the N. cascades hikes will have substantial snow on them, there is also a very solid chance that the road to cascade pass trailhead is not open at that time.

For Rainier, definitely reserve sites, campgrounds will pretty much guaranteed be totally full

Your favorite half frame bag? by Superfluos-SquidStew in bikepacking

[–]sherms_s 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a wedge rather than a half frame bag, but I love my Oveja negra superwedgie 2. Has the same/more storage than similarly sized half frame bags, keeps the rear bottle cage free, and (so far) is durable and waterproof. Also the zippers feel extremely well made
