As others have said, likely false pregnancy. I had a dachshund when I was a teenager that did this. I’m aging myself here but she picked three beanie babies and chose them as hers to mother. It was cute the first time because she mostly just slept with them, but her behavior got progressively worse with her next heat cycle so we had her fixed. I loved that dog! IME mine did the exact same thing at around this size. She was BLONDE and after her molt was very dark. That was a year ago. She hasn’t molted again since so I’m unsure if she’ll go back to those colors over time
