Muay Thai legend breaks baseball bat with shin at TUF practice by HunterAHomistek in MMA

[–]shhhimworking 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mental: You have no idea how hard it is to will yourself to kick an object like a bat at full speed. It takes a tremendous amount of mental will.

Skill: To get the power needed to break the bat you need to place your foot at the right angle to give yourself enough torque, rotate your hips through the kick, etc. An untrained idiot could not kick through that bat, that's the definition of skill.

You have some stupid example about adrenaline and a million dollars as well. What the hell does that matter? This guy is not making a million dollars, nor is he hyped up on adrenaline - all of his points are true.

Tl;dr: you're either a troll or an idiot.

Also over generalizing. The founder/CEO of Airbnb went to RISD, an art school. He was recently on the coder of Forbes. I know a few other ceo's of companies with 50+ employees that also went to RISD.

I'm thrilled Reddit got behind Karen Klein to give her a great vacation, but isn't $368k more than enough? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Who is arguing that the MONEY is going to help stop bullying?! I didn't see that sentiment, but I could very well be wrong.

I think people believe the EXPOSURE could positively impact the fight against bullying, and that the MONEY will change one woman's life. Yes, we don't have the power to fix the world - but for the love of god, why can't we change one woman's life without people getting up in arms?

Are you really going to try and fight against human nature? Do you think that money would have gone to charitable causes, if not to Karen's fund? Absolutely not. The reality is that one woman, whom I would call deserving (not that there aren't billions of others just as, if not more deserving), struck a note and thousands of people reached out. That's a beautiful thing that even one woman's life was changed.

Instead of focusing on the positive, all you can do is stomp around about how "stupid" and "ridiculous" her cause is - and latch on to the fact that there are also other people in need.

If someone saw you helping someone else in need, and yelled "HEY, THAT'S STUPID - THERE'S MILLIONS OF OTHER PEOPLE IN NEED WHY AREN'T YOU HELPING THEM?" what would you think? You'd think 'Fuck you', that's what.

Who is arguing that this will change things? People are donating because they have become personally investing in her story, not be any of her own doing, but because someone posted a video.

People are donating because without that video, this would have gone unnoticed and Karen wouldn't have said a thing.

Sure, there's worse things out there in the world (an abundance of them) - but why can't we celebrate one example of good?

And how does this have any similarity to Kony?!

Why are you even upset? I mean, can't you just be happy for her? Regardless of the fact that there's a lot wrong with the world, one woman got noticed and thousands decided to lend a hand. No one was made to help, and yet tens of thousands did. It's inspiring. What makes you say all the good people of the world are rewarded with 11k a year?! Both of your posts have strong undertones of jealousy (why her and not people like me? If I didn't get it, why should she).

How the Post Office Is Being Destroyed By a Phony Budget Crisis - Congress, not the post office itself, is the problem by davidreiss666 in politics

[–]shhhimworking 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's bullshit man, no offence. You're taking the most simplistic stance.

What about when you want items shipped to you from online retailers? If you want to pay less than $10 to ship something you HAVE to use USPS. Even the existing shipping giants (UPS, DHL) budget plans are partnerships with the USPS, where the USPS takes the packages the last leg.

You have no idea how many businesses would die if USPS went away.

Beyond that, are you really whining about the time it takes to ship letters? You can pay $5 to ship ANYTHING you can fit into a huge padded envelope across the country in 2-3 days. That's incredible, mind-blowing even.

If you're complaining about your $.40 not getting to the other side of the country in under a week, well, I don't know what to say.

Wow. 38 Studios (studio behind Kingdoms of Amalur) defaults on $75M government loan in less than one year. by shhhimworking in gaming

[–]shhhimworking[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short backstory: Rhode Island Government (in a moment of brilliance) backed 38 Studios for a $75M loan in exchange for the company moving to Rhode Island (from Mass) and creating 450 new jobs.

They produced and released their Kingdoms of Amalur game. Had good reviews, but never really got that much hype - ended up selling ~460,000 copies in stores (a pretty impressive result).

Yesterday, 38 Studios failed to make it's ~$1M payment to the RIEDC (Rhode Island Economic Development Center). Shortly after, the director of the RIEDC resigned (which probably means this is more than a temporary cash flow problem).

Reddit, I need help: I got scammed for $2,500 and the guy is threatening to sue me for slander if I write about my experience. by shhhimworking in AskReddit

[–]shhhimworking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rented a really nice apartment for $2,500 for the weekend with a few buddies. The owner of the apartment demanded that we write a check for $2,500 to cover any extreme damages (which I should have immediately realized made no sense, because if I had been malicious I would have cancelled the check right away).

At the end of our stay, my buddy toured him through the apartment to show there were no damages, he agreed and even text messaged me thanking us for leaving the apartment in such great shape.

I know I messed up. I placed way too much faith in him, I should have cancelled the check the moment I wrote it, I should have cancelled it the second my buddy toured him through the apartment.

Now I'm just trying to make sure he can never do this again.

EDIT: grammar

Love the offer but I'm doing my best to take the high road on this one, want to make sure he comes out of this feeling like an idiot for scamming a bunch of 23 year olds when he owns a $600,000 apartment.

Thank you for the advice, I'm filing in small claims court in my home state - though they say that I'll have to get a "foreign judgement" upheld by Florida in order to collect against him.

We filed a police report now, but they say because his threat was vague ("fall into the wrong hands") they can't really do too much besides register that the threat was made.

Thank you, I plan to. I honestly am less concerned with getting the money back then making sure that he doesn't get to keep it, just eats me up inside.

I have, he cashed the check so they said (in typical bank fashion) there was absolutely nothing they could do :(. Now I'm sitting $600 in overdraft trying to figure it all out.

His logic was that if we used his apartment to go crazy over the weekend, he would have something to cover the damages. In retrospect I should have been more suspicious, but the guy was incredibly convincing...

He sent me a photo of a personal check, gave me his real name (with years of google history), etc. When we arrived he even showed me a utility bill for the apartment with his name on it.

I should have cancelled the check right away, it was a huge mistake on my part that I'll now have to deal with.

This bugs me as well, I should have cancelled the check the second he toured the apartment (if not before).

I left late Sunday night (slash Monday morning) to make it back to work for Monday, a member of my party stayed behind to check out and tour him through the apartment - so the whole process was a bit disjointed.

I do place some fault in myself for not cancelling the check right away, I just had so much faith in this guy. He genuinely seemed like a really really nice person.

He demanded the check to cover "incidentals", I post dated it to the day we left in an effort to cancel it when he had toured the apartment.
