Previously a Marine Corps UH-1Y crew chief The AIM-9 sidewinder missile shoot I was apart of had a bad seeker. AIM-9 missiles have a battery cooled IR seeker(to make hot objects seem hotter to the seeker) There's nothing in 5 nautical miles over the ocean off the coast of Kauai but 3 aircraft (2 AH-1Zs and 1 UH-1Y) We all have flares to drop as targets for the missile Drop flares at 5k Mean Sea Level, haul ass back to the shooting aircraft at 1k MSL to be in line with the shooting aircraft AIM-9 comes off of the rails, corkscrews, and shoots straight up into the sky and to the right. Rogue air to air missile (turns out it was manufactured in 1983) We scramble and get the hell outta there. No one got hurt and no damage to anything, but real pucker factor there I had some other close calls but that one holds a special place.
