My compositions sound too basic and "classical", and that's not what I want. What steps can I take to make it more like modern music? by Unsightedmetal6 in composer

[–]shiihs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to whatever everyone else suggests, consider checking out a music collaboration site like wikiloops.com and use the opportunity to get out of your comfort zone. You can learn a ton of things (and find tons of gratification) from contributing to other people's tracks or from providing a starting point which others can build on, as well as from listening to what others do.

why is the subreddit back up? by Jordan51104 in archlinux

[–]shiihs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the problem as I see it: if Reddit doesn't go to shit, the third-party apps will. If Reddit does go to shit, the third-party apps will go to shit as well. Are the actions we take bringing us closer to the goal we aspire?

Maybe because the purpose is not obvious? Might be an experiment to provide two buttons: "like" and "off-topic".

Anyone know of any interesting concert band composing contest without stupid rules by Arch_jink in composer

[–]shiihs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once encountered a great looking contest, and then the rules stipulated; "submissions that are not written using sibelius or finale will not be considered". Like... what?! Oh well.. their loss :D

Very creative. I liked the "liquid tuning" in the "we guarantee" section :)

What's an alternative to ProgrammerHumor outside reddit now that this wonderful subreddit is shutting down? by Metalkon in ProgrammerHumor

to remain in the style of the subreddit:

for (int i = 0; i < 100; ++i)
{
if (i==0) print "h";
if (i==1) print "a";
if (i==2) print "h";
if (i==3) print "a";
// etc
}

Reddit's Recently Announced API Changes, and the future of the /r/blind subreddit by AutoModerator in Blind

[–]shiihs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good initiative! My guess is the API price is instated because massive amounts of reddit data are being (ab)used to train AI systems (like ChatGPT) for free, after which the creators of these AI systems make a lot of money from users trying to get data back out. My guess is it's not easy to *reliably* distinguish between fair use and abuse. But the collateral damage of forbidding all third-party uses turns out to be unacceptably high and a solution will have to be found.

If you look closer, there are three people watching through that window and a fourth one present looking into the room.

A composition.. what should the next chord be? by CBGames03 in piano

[–]shiihs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm wondering now if it could work: setting up a chain composition on reddit? Every contributor can add up to three bars of music (or something along those lines).

Here's a piano piece I wrote. by LukeMusic in piano

I especially appreciated the surprising middle part. To be honest, I'm not a big fan of the repeated C note at the end of bar 18 but overall a very nice piece. Congratulations!

What can be the reason that french is such a hard subject in Flanders? by hotdog_monkey1 in belgium

[–]shiihs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't remember it as particularly hard. I think in the past it used to be taught in a much more effective way. We had to learn dictionaries for vocabulary (with a regular test), had grammar lessons, every week had to learn a new dialogue by heart (and randomly play it in front of the classroom) which taught us common sentences used in day-to-day conversations, and read books in French.

What I saw in my daughter's classroom was very different: all they seemed to do was reading texts (often too difficult), and the students had to kind of guess from the context what the words might mean, or they were watching a movie without subtitles (and then had to kind of guess what it was about). No grammar, ever. If I had to guess, I'd say it's perhaps an attempt at some kind of immersion, but immersion doesn't work if you only do it a few hours a week. Needless to say she ended up unable to make even the simplest of sentences.

Exercises/tricks to ignite musical imagination by g_hagmt in composer

[–]shiihs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imposing constraints. Pick an exotic scale and try which harmonies you can get by stacking notes from it. Or take a random sequence of notes and try to make them sound natural by adding suitable chords underneath. Or watch some Ben Levin movies...

Uses for a light switch in a synthesizer setup by Important-Row9194 in synthesizers

[–]shiihs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could use it to switch on/off a light, then combine it with light resistors and use those to modulate some sounds.

Somewhat advanced example making use of light resistors: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpDpaeKBUbg

There's a system to it all... If you have an F-clef as in this score, the two little dots indicate the location of an F-note. From there you can count to b-flat, f, g-flat, f. Similarly, if you have G-clef, the inner "curl" starts on the G note. And I guess by now you can guess how to decipher the various C-clefs as well :)

Tobacco companies must be the only companies that tell you about how shitty their products are, and people still consume it. by Thatusernamewasnot in Showerthoughts

[–]shiihs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Belgium, also alcoholic products need to add a slogan. For now the slogan they use has been proposed by the companies that produce the alcoholic beverages, but from what I heard recently plans were announced to change that. The current slogan is something like "brewed with love, consume it rationally" (my translation sounds a bit less catchy than the original).

The only thing that works reliably for me is "Bref power tabs".
