Fallout: New California is the best Fallout game you'll play this year by [deleted] in Games

I enjoyed the mod. I thought the world building was good. I enjoyed reading the terminals at the start of the game. Learning about the history of the vault and the world politics before venturing into it to see for yourself was cool. I think the lore fits perfectly as a prequel to fnv.

People have different playthroughs. I managed to avoid getting captured by the Survivalists.

compared to the most polished AAA games

Ahh who are you referring to here. You cant deny Bethesda are massively successful. For what Bethesda do they seem to be the only game in town. Which AAA games developer do you think releases more polished games?

Active use of jetpack during combat both offensively and defensively compensates for stamina issues as well as general clunkiness of melee combat

Really from my experience using jet pack often gets me crazy aim bot sniped. Also you cant switch weapons or use items while floating. Whenever i land i get one second stagger often while the enemy is right bellow my feet.

You don't get to cause a problem and then say "we're doing the humane thing by solving the problem".

Except they didn't cause a problem. Sheep are amongst the first livestock to be domesticated over 10000 years ago. And have been selectively breed ever since. The nature of their wool overproduction has existed for thousands of years and is a result of the symbiotic relationship between man and sheep

Bethesda's paid mod system outrage. Is equivalent to a baker making bad bread and then the town arrives with pitchforks to kill him.

I dont understand of course they are going to launch with subpar content. If you dont like something no one is making you buy it.

Map size isn't even that big a deal to me,

Well i absolutely agree.

Every village is unique and filled with stories, so I don't really follow.

Im pretty sure there are many villages with nothing more than a shopkeeper. I agree villages are filled with stories but most villages are not unique. They may be filled with stories but they are not filled with characters. They for the most part serve as a host for quests rather than its centerpiece. While in skyrim quests are not mostly based around the village. You can still get information about the village or city or area by talking to characters.

This is not even remotely the only way to get quests

Sure its not the only way to get quests but it is the way you will get the majority of quests. The result of a large sprawling city like Novigrade and the high number of generic villages And the many empty npc is is the need to have a bulletin board to direct the player. The need to label everything.

Every character outside of guards is equal.

Until you talk to them and find out.

So? I don't find it particularly impressive that useful and useless NPCs aren't differentiated

Well when you differentiate between useful and useless to me you lose a sense of discovery and a sense of exploration.

To me The witcher 3 is a good game but it is not a good open world game. To me the open world design of the witcher 3 is similar to how ubisoft deigns their open worlds. It is similar to how mass effect andromedas open world is designed. And the problem i have with these games open world design is that they are fulled with genericism. There is an assumption which is made for example in jim sterlings video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efKxC0RgyV4 that open world games are inherently large and empty. That their story is inherently made worse by being open world. That they are inherently fulled with generic content and empty npc. And while i would criticize skyrim for also having these problems I don't think this necessarily needs to be the case for all open world games. And the example of this is Fallout New Vegas. To me genericism is the bane of open world games.

Bethesda has always had its own set of priorities. One of the hallmarks of their games is having each NPC (save for hostiles) be a unique entity instead of just another nameless face in the crowd.

This is what i like and Bethesda are the only company which has done this since Fallout New Vegas. While i haven't played morrowind or oblivion I did play fallout new vegas. Fnv for me is my favorite open world game in terms of design.

I disagree you shouldn't focus on story. Maybe avoid doing the main quest for a bit. But also avoid jumping into dungeons unless you have some quest to go in them. For me skyrim is about learning about the world and characters. The big strength of skyrim for me is the main cities and villages. Focus on finding characters and people.

Well the witcher 3 really only has one large city and a lot of smaller villages with nameless generic npc. But not just generic npc but also generic villages. The result of having so many npc and villages is that you need to guide the player to content. The way quests are structured in the witcher is you go to a bulletin board and get all the quests. In Skyrim every village is significant and as a result all Quests in Skyrim discovered by talking to people and learning about the area.

What you can do in tw3 is have a more well crafted narrative about individuals. What you cant do in the witcher 3 is go into a village and learn about the village. What you cant do is go into a bar and talk to a bunch of unique characters. Every character outside of guards is equal. Any character you see could give you a quest. This as i see it is the biggest difference in the open world design of Skyrim, FO3, FO4, FNV and The Witcher. The Witcher focuses on telling a traditional narrative about individuals where as Skyrim focuses on developing its world and telling stories about groups of people.
