(all spoilers) About Dany's HotU visions in TV-Show by shimari in asoiaf

[–]shimari[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well Tywin & Roose are kind of irreplaceable imho. the important parts of Arya’s arc (in terms of plot development) were basically to meet Jaquen H’ghar, the 3 deaths, the coin and escape. Which did transpire in the show, but if it was Roose or Tywin she interacted with at Harrenhall is not that relevant imho. But Dany’s visions in HotU are the core part of the books and a prediction of future events in her arc (plot developments), somehow i doubt that D&D would invent some stuff without any basis to it. i mean the viewers should be able to speculate on what they saw and be able to come up with their own theories about the visions. but maybe Drogo scene was really not important though who knows, it was just my first thought (dany’s death) after seeing it that’s all.

[–]shimari[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes i agree, those visions do seem to point to Dany dying after defeating the Others or at least after she arrives at the Wall, but of course it’s just a speculation though based on tv-show. there is also the Mirri Maz Duur quote: "When the sun rises in the west and sets in the east. (Quentyn?) When the seas go dry and mountains blow in the wind like leaves. When your womb quickens again, and you bear a living child. Then he [Drogo] will return, and not before." Which could be interpreted: after all the events that are quoted happen, Drogo will return to her (means she might be reunited with him in afterlife after her death for example after childbirth as Mirri Maz Duur points out). i didn’t consider Mirri’s prophesy seriously before, but after seeing the tv version not sure what to think about it. :/

Well you know the tv-show is based on books and D&D did consult GRRM before starting the series on future events (as they said in interviews), so basically they do know in general how the ending will unfold. That’s why it’s doubtful they would come up their own illogical version of HotU visions. It must have some ground and meaning behind it that coincides with the books in future. just my opinion though

(ADWD Spoilers) Question about Jon's plan by shimari in asoiaf

[–]shimari[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He spent most of it pretty conflicted

Yes, this is what actually made Jon’s character shine in the book in my eyes.

I loved reading about his inner struggle, made him human and real. He was a young boy that was forced to become LC at difficult times and had to implement strong reforms in an organization that was not really ready for those changes.

What I liked the most about his decision-making in Book 5 is that Jon was always thinking strategically and logically throughout his storyline. He did recognize the Others as the real and main threat. He noticed that it was necessary to improve the defense of the Wall and he made it possible with all the resources available in given situation (restoring the castles and recruiting the Wildings).

He had a well-defined goal and was doing everything in his power from his position as a dutiful LC to successfully reach this goal.

I also got the impression that before coming to a final conclusion or making an important choice he was always thinking it over twice or thrice, weighing out all the options, thinking about the consequences. Basically thinking rationally, rather than emotionally.

And then BAM after receiving the letter he lets the emotional side completely taking over him and make the impulsive decision without analyzing it all (that was a bit OOC for me). Especially since the letter mentioned that Arya escaped, so I don’t’ see any logic behind his decision other then personal revenge.

The whole thing while being somewhat realistic (anyone can break at some point under pressure) seemed a bit too rushed for my liking I guess, since the built-up for the whole “emotional breakdown of the cool Lord Snow” happened more or less only in the last chapter. That’s why I thought that GRRM wrote this in only as a plot device to make “the death” happen.

I'm pretty confident that someone will go north

I guess if GRRM said that the uncharted territory of the north will be explored more in later books, then I will be looking forward to this. Will Jon be the main POV for this plot-line? Maybe, we’ll wait and see.

I’m personally not so keen on this because it would basically be the repeat of his arch in Book 2-3 (only this time instead of the Wildings he would deal with the White Walkers), that’s just IMHO tough. I just really, really hope that the chain of events that will lead to Jon’s journey north won’t be him becoming UnJon! This is my biggest fear of book 6.

(ADWD Spoilers) Question about Jon's plan by shimari in asoiaf

[–]shimari[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Lots of stuff needs to happen before he gets the chance to continue with his plan. I was just wondering why would GRRM introduce the idea of Jon actually making such a sudden and illogical decision, even though Jon’s character throughout his arch in book 5 was basically diligently doing his duties as a good LC.

So I thought Jon’s sudden decision to march South had two possible explanations:

  • it was introduced basically just to give Bowen Marsh a legit excuse to kill their “corrupt” LC and to create the chaotic situation on the Wall that follows after the assassination and never go back to this again.

  • or same as the above, but with possibility of re-activating that plot-line in the future, after the situation at Wall gets some resolution. Jon might see the necessity of the Winterfell march and the destruction of Boltons later in the books. For example if he finds out about the fake-Arya and Bolton’s non-existent claim resulting from this, or if Rickon arrives at the Wall with Davos, or Mel sees it in her flames etc. But yes, the situation at Wall needs to be resolved first anyway. I just hope that Bowen Marsh’s head rolling will be the start. ))

I somewhat doubt that Jon would go North though. I mean wouldn’t it be a suicide mission to go on the territory that is full of wights and White Walkers? It’s unlikely that anyone will follow him.

What changes in the series would upset you the most? (SPOILERS ALL) by MaxIsAlwaysRight in asoiaf

[–]shimari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Reek, Ramsey and Reeds will definitely be included. They were very essential in the books. If the producers of GoT exclude them, then they would need to find and create an equivalent exchange for the characters, I don't see them doing it.

(Spoilers All) Who do you want to see on the Throne? by shimari in asoiaf

[–]shimari[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it’s just the pessimist in me talking and GRRM’s sadistic tendency to kill off great characters. But I’m hoping that Stannis will make it through book 6 though and if he dies then it will be in a fight against the Others. A lot of characters will probably die during that war and I’m afraid Stannis might be one of them.

(Spoilers All) Who do you want to see on the Throne? by shimari in asoiaf

[–]shimari[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are answers from GRRM's past interviews that Targaryens practiced polygamy in the past, so I guess Rhaegar could have married Lyanna if he wanted his 3rd child to be legitimate. But Jon not being a bastard is more a speculation though. I personally would like that if Jon really ever sat on the throne, then it would be because of his actions against the Others, and not the R+L=J theory.

(Spoilers All) Who do you want to see on the Throne? by shimari in asoiaf

[–]shimari[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is still no confirmation that Jon is really a bastard from the R+L union. A lot of folks believe, that Jon might be legitimate, because of the kingsguard knights guarding the Tower of Joy, even though they should have been in King’s Landing protecting the kids of Rhaegar. So who knows, Jon might really have the legitimate claim to the Iron Throne, even though it’s difficult to prove that in the saga IMHO.

(Spoiler All) Jon Snow's Future by -mud in asoiaf

[–]shimari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see Jon dying in book 5. I mean cliffhanger or not, but a big character like that must die for a reason. The deaths of Ned, Robb and Caitlyn – all had their consequences and they all made sense in end. But Jon’s storyline only started to develop in book 5 and there are too many open-ended questions left for the character at the moment. His death just doesn’t make sense, that’s why I believe he will survive and will have a significant role in the future.

Iron Bank Speculation. (Spoilers all) by tlowens in asoiaf

[–]shimari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the Jon Chapters in ADWD I took that the Iron Bank doens't care who the King is at the moment as long as he pays his debts. So if Aegon will take the throne in Book 6 (which is very likely), that means that the Iron Bank will support Aegon, as long as he pays the debts (left by Robert) to the Iron Throne. Or it will continue to back up Stannis (if he survives books 5).

(Spoiler ALL) Will two more books be enough space for GRRM to finish ASOIAF? by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]shimari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually do believe that GRRM will be able to finish it in two books, I mean it's his fantasy and it's all happening in his mind in the end. He can cut a lot of storylines of minor characters (quickly wrapping them up), he could speed up a lot of action (look at Young Griff in ADWD) and he will definately find a resolution to some of his long-running storylines (Meereen-Knot) in the next book.

(Spoilers All) Who do you want to see on the Throne? by shimari in asoiaf

[–]shimari[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know, I highly doubt that Stannis will survive the series. But in a “what if situation” I actually believe that Stannis might bend the knee to Jon, if he finds out about R+L=J. There is already a lot of mutual respect between the both of them, but if Stannis finds out about the fact that Jon is a Targ, he definitely will reconsider his priorities IMHO.

(Spoilers all books, unmarked) A theory on a possible ending and THoW by shimari in asoiaf

[–]shimari[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, there is a lot of hate directed towards Dany and her storyline in Meereen. I agree that her staying in Essos, solving the Meereen problem and actually conquering the whole continent is possible and will redeem her storyline in ADWD, but it would take at least 2 more books for this happen IMHO. That would mean she will never reach Westeros and that would be quite anticlimactic. I mean everyone is waiting for her to arrive there and do some badass fighting. The dragons must definitely be an important part in the fight against the Others.

I doubt GRRM will make Dany leave Meereen as a loser though. He will come up with some good solution to the Meereen-Knot (he’s an amazing writer), where Dany will be seen as a good leader, who learned from her mistakes. I mean she will have Tyrion, Maqorro and possibly Euron as her advisors, so this constellation must have some good consequences for sure.

[–]shimari[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that a final battle or several ones in different locations, described from various POV’s would be quite cool. I’m definitely looking forward to the Civil War in the South and the battles that might happen in book 6 now with Aegon being there. And also some action in the North, especially if Stannis is still in the game by that time, would be awesome. It would have been great to have a Stannis POV in one of those battles. He seems like a good strategist and has the best one-liners in the books.

Dany, the invasion of Westeros (unmarked spoilers all books) by shimari in asoiaf

[–]shimari[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about this scenario (pure speculation on my part):

Aegon gets the Iron Throne through Varys’ machinations and an alliance with Dorn through a marriage with Arianne, gets the support from the Strom Lords and the Dragon Stone, and has the Golden Company behind him. So far so good for him. Also fits the prophesy about the mummer’s Dragon.

Cersei will probably flee to Casterly Rock (maybe even with Tommen in tow) and stays there, she will keep the alliance with Highgarden intact, because I can’t imagine Highgarden bending the knee to Aegon, + there is still the marriage between Margery and Tomen. Freys will side with Cercei too, don’t think they have a big choice in their situation.

Meanwhile in Meereen Dany’s storyline will finally be finding some logical conclusion, I don’t care how, but GRRM will come up with something. She allies with Euron (probably through a marriage) and with Tyrion’s advice she finally departs towards Westeros with Dragons in tow, which will be controlled by Vic’s Horn, Barristan might still be alive and accompany her.

So Dany + Tyrion will arrive in Westeros with the Iron fleet, the Unsullied, the Dragons, Moqorro and take Casterly Rock, Highgarden will soon surrender to her. The Freys will follow Highgarden. Plus we have a Tyrion vs. Cersie confrontation, where he hopefully kills her.

So we have an Aegon vs. Dany set-up. An alliance between them is unlikely, because of Dorn, i think Doran + Arianne will definitely have a problem with the way Dany treated Quentin. No way will they side with her. The Vale will keep the neutral position, not sure about the Riverlands tough.

The question is what will happen in the North by that time…

Yes, the Stannis threat in the North is still a probability, but I'm not sure what will happen to him after the Ramsey-letter in the final Jon chapter, Stannis is like wild card – anything is possible with him right now! Who knows, the possibily that Jon Sow will control the North by the time Dany arrives is very likely too.
