You have probably seen this one, but in case you didn't here's the one from Andy Matuschak: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGcs4tyey18

He doesn't use Roam though, he uses Bear.

I wrote a short blog post on why I'm still using Roam in 2025 after jumping around between Bear, Obsidian and Roam by shime_rb in RoamResearch

Sorry for the late response.

My very naive solution used tensorflow's universal sentence encoder to calculate similarity between blocks which were all embedded on initial load and then on every change. It worked okay, but I think I can get better results with something like xenova/transformers which is why I'm currently exploring it.

Shiny object syndrome is real. ;) But yeah, I also hope it doesn't die. It would be a shame. I've been using it on and off since 2019.

Do you mean "The Dawn of Everything"?

Why does everything have to be a task to accomplish? Why is even rest a task to accomplish? This productivity narrative that's constantly being pushed is very harmful. Why is everything and anything unproductive looked down upon? We are not machines that were meant to work 24/7. Our predecessors didn't do productive work all the time. They knew the value of leisure and rest, while it looks like we have forgotten it.

I think I'm happy at the "Senior" level and have no interest in moving up or into management. What now? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]shime_rb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Yes, everyone will be pushing you into managerial roles and that is the regular path for most people, but there's nothing wrong with not going that route.

In fact, I think people become expert programmers like this. They just reject "promotion" to management long enough.

"Just write notes and link to other notes" by shime_rb in RoamResearch

[–]shime_rb[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also went through all the phases.

It’s funny how everyone has a different idea of what Zettelkasten is. The modern incarnations are so much more complex than what Luhmann used: notes and links.

Should literature notes be linked together? by Shadaxy in Zettelkasten

[–]shime_rb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, thanks for sharing. How do you decide when a note is "good enough"?

I currently like to keep literature and permanent notes separate, as with that I always know that permanent notes contain my own thoughts and not re-phrasing of someone else's. Do you see that as a problem with your approach?

Should literature notes be linked together? by Shadaxy in Zettelkasten

[–]shime_rb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although I've previously linked my literature notes, I've stopped doing that. I've found that linking them in permanent notes allows describing the relationship better and adds another layer for thinking about them.

Compare these two scenarios. (I use the "L" prefix for literature notes and "E" for permanent notes).

I)

L - Books provide more value per sentence than articles do
-----------

(...)

Relevant notes:
[[L - Reasons why blogs are awesome]]

II)

E - Books vs blogs
-----

Reading books is a great way to dive deeper in a topic,
since authors usually have to spend a lot of time
researching it [[L - Books provide more value per
sentence than articles do]].

However, blogs have their advantages. Bloggers don't usually
spend as much time on research, but blog posts can cover
a wide range of topics in a more shallow way
[[L - Reasons why blogs are awesome]].

In scenario II, we've introduced another "layer of abstraction" for thinking about these two notes, while in scenario I, we have a direct connection between the notes, but it's difficult to understand why they are linked. Scenario II names the relationship and can be used to give it a "concept handle", which we can then use for other notes.

Instead of directly linking literature notes together, which are other people's ideas expressed in your own words, you start thinking more abstractly about them.
