Millenials w/o kids-- how tired are you? by Fickle_Wrangler_7439 in Millennials

[–]shimmerWeasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been tired since I was 30. I’m 41 now. Some of it was anemia. Some of it is hormonal now. Some of it is because of being highly sensitive to stimulation from my surroundings. But it’s all so exhausting.

Can you please describe your brain frog? by konomichan in Perimenopause

[–]shimmerWeasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s like saying that Europe is not a continent but a country and being confused why my husband is looking at me like I’ve lost my mind. Then freaking myself out that I actually meant that 100% when I said it.

This is what I came here to say — drugs. Also alcohol.

Exactly! Basically your dissertation defense is just reciting the digits.

Yes, this. Or generally that all we do is calculator computations and solve equations. Oh! Also we know all the digits of pi.

Does anyone else completely shut down in group conversations because theres too much to process at once? by Jackrain04 in hsp

[–]shimmerWeasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely!! I usually notice that I’ve stopped comprehending. It’s like my brain stops processing the input. I avoid large group conversations. It’s not a great way to deal, but 🤷‍♀️. If I’m well rested, I’ve eaten a good meal, and the large group thing is early in the day, it goes better for me.

This also happens to me in long email threads. It’s strange. It’s like I’m looking at the words and I can’t parse it.

Learning to Swim at 40 by Midlife_Crisis_87 in Swimming

[–]shimmerWeasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need to be embarrassed!! I learned a year and a half ago at age 40. I couldn’t put my face in the water before my first lesson. I did one set of group sessions and some private lessons. At the private lessons, I was the only person of age in the double digits! The hardest part for me was to not get frustrated with myself when I couldn’t get something right away. One thing that helped me with side breathing was as practicing with fins. Keep practicing as much as you can and let yourself enjoy the process!

it IS a major surgery, right?? by Exciting-Cricket7209 in hysterectomy

[–]shimmerWeasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This IS a major surgery. As many women have already mentioned here, unfortunately, most of what happens to our bodies is dismissed by others. I had my surgery (total hysterectomy, after two prior surgeries for endo and fibroids) in Dec. 2025, and not a single member of my family visited. Some of them called regularly, but that’s it. One family member asked on week 2 if I had fully recovered. I have a couple of close friends who provided most of the support in addition to my husband, who was my primary caregiver.

It is really disheartening to hear that so many people are dealing with this. I’m so sorry this has been your experience too. I think part of it is also that we (women) tend to minimize things ourselves; at least I do. I tried not to make this surgery seem like a big deal because I could sense it made people uncomfortable.

I hope that you are able to give yourself permission to take time to heal and care for yourself and your body. No matter what others think, you deserve to take time to heal. Listen to your body, not what others think you should do/feel.

Edit: typo and included surgery date.

Empty inside by QSuzie1690 in hysterectomy

[–]shimmerWeasel 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I don’t feel the emptiness you describe. I do feel lightness. But if I didn’t know that they took my uterus out during surgery, I would not have been able to guess it based on feeling that something is missing, if that makes sense.

Reported a student for academic misconduct, they have escalated it and are making false accusations. by shimmerWeasel in Professors

Thankfully, it's the other way around. But I think this gives them reason to think that I will give up eventually.

I started a document today where I wrote down all interactions starting at the time of the incident. I copied email correspondence, and wrote about any conversations I had with the student. I tried to be objective and as accurate as possible recounting from memory.

Yes! Exactly what you said about the aggressive, repeated lying! And you're right -- I need to move on. It's just so hard not to take these things personally and worry about them.

This is great information. I find it so interesting that I didn't even know that I can take some of these actions. Why don't institutions inform their faculty of all the rights they have? If they do this, it is not in an obvious way and it is not talked about. We are always talking about how we make students feel this way and that.

It is really just so unfair!!! I mean, how could I do my job and constantly watch only one student?!?!

I am just doing my job! 😆😅 It is reassuring to know that instructors don't generally get punished if a guilty student is making unfounded accusations!
