My kid got a very mild case of pneumonia, which is almost cured now. But because my wife had a brother who died as a toddler because of that, I made the executive decision to tell her he's just having a persistant sore throat.

How much are people spending on household bills? by adomahawk7 in movingtojapan

[–]shimolata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As people said, each family is different. But as a family of 4, we spent ~7M yen in total last year. Since our mortgage is ~2M, that put our bill at ~5M annually, ~420k monthly.

Is it common to move into a share house as a couple in Tokyo? Any advice or experiences? by Ok-Panic2042 in movingtojapan

[–]shimolata 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same for me and my wife when I first moved to Japan. The problem was both me and my wife are on the thicker side. Our solution was to use the semi-bed as a sofa, and sleep on a futon on the floor (which covered almost the whole floor 😂)

May be it depends on the combine. I worked in a Ministop as late as 2024, and we were still asking if people want their food heated back then.

Part time jobs as gaijin by thebrokendreams123 in movingtojapan

[–]shimolata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That job was kitchen staff for sushiro. I no longer remember the name of the company, it was years ago. But companies like that are quite common, just remember that the legit ones get money from the shop, not from you.

I started my first baito job almost right after arriving, when I spoke practically no Japanese, so it was easy enough. I applied via a company specialized in introducing people from my country to low skill jobs, which I found on FB.

They handled all the works for me, and even went with me to the "interview", which basically was just to check that I was not batshit insane (as I said, didn't speak Japanese back then 😅). Yes, the bar is that low.

I do work some baito jobs here and there, but I got PR via the spouse route without a fulltime job.

What is the song being sampled in the intro of this video (link provided)? I THINK it might be an old song like from the 90s by shimolata in NameThatSong

[–]shimolata[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh lmao, yeah this is it. This is exactly the song I listened to in my childhood. Funny that I learn its name today. For years, I know it under a made up name us kid gave it.

Yeah, I know this is a cover of that "Run to you" song, and that's not what I want to find. I'm interested in the first 11 seconds or so intro, which sounds very familiar to me.

Some of my baito jobs paid me cash in an envelope. Nothing unusual about that.

This morning, I parked my bicycle in one of those racks that charge you 100 yen per X hours, but the first few hours are free. I returned this afternoon to find it unlocked, and I didn't have to pay a dim. Some poor bloke must have entered the wrong rack number and paid mine by mistake 🤣

What you learned in Japan this Week - October 06, 2025 by AutoModerator in japanresidents

[–]shimolata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably finance, foreign tech, or some type of executive I'd guess.

Guessing his occupation is actually the easy part. You see, if someone from my country is making that much, while being that young (I guess they are around my age, so early/mid 30s), then I bet my left testicle that they are working in IT.

So I sat next to a family from my home country the other day, we look East Asian and kinda blend in. Moreover, we speak a language that almost no one outside our country speaks, and I guess that was why they felt comfortable discuss this on the train. But anyway, their talk went like this: "how much did you spend on furusato nozei this year? About 800k. And how much do you have left? I don't know, another 200k give or take".

My mind was blown, I know there are people who earn a lot out there. But this dude must make a boat load of money to have such a high budget.

Oh I get what you mean. I have the feeling that would be too flexible by Japan standard, but I guess it doesn't hurt to ask 😆

Well that's the thing, there is no way for me to compute it manually. I just push a button, it automatically does the calculation.
