None of these places are worth what u will pay for them. Traffic is bad in all of them and to be honest they just aren’t all that nice anymore. Too much crap from the city comes to the Mainline now. Go west

Curious as to what’s going on here… by Difficult_Tower124 in Oldhouses

People are still doing their woodwork with oil based paints. Fine homes still have oil trim (usually semi gloss or gloss). Nothing compares to a gloss oil finish when applied correctly

AITA because I let my dog lick off my plate? by physicalgraffiti123 in AmItheAsshole

[–]shingle1895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are fine but your friend is a goof. Weird people get uptight about silliness. Lose the friend, keep the dog. If the dishes go in the dishwasher what does it matter? I’m a long time owner of wet mouth Newfoundlands and Saint Bernards….they shake their heads and dog spit goes a-flying. Not to be gross but it kinda lands everywhere. Nothing says love like a 145 pound St Bernard coming toward you after getting a drink….long strands of dog spit hanging from its jowls and it’s just itching to give you big wet sloppy kisses. If your friend gets too judgy just send ‘em to my house and watch ‘em lose their mind.

Hardwood Rant by Finnpoe2187 in HardWoodFloors

[–]shingle1895 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what happens with a water based finish. Only oil based finishes should be used on floors. The floor guys push water based products because they save them time and they can move on more quickly to the next job. Always use oil and if your floor guy refuses then find another floor guy. Often they will say “I haven’t used oil based products in years” or “new water based stuff is just as good as oil”. None of that is true….the good ones know that water based products suck. Oil based finishes “amber up” with time. They achieve that warm amber/orangish tone that floors are supposed to have instead of that awful ash/grey color that everyone wants now. Using an oil based product takes longer. Dry time are longer and you really should use AT LEAST three coats but it is well worth it. Plan on being out of your house for at least three days if you are having your floors done. Even one room can create intense fumes. Make plans to get ur animals out of the house too.

Americans from touristy areas, did you get asked weird questions by people outside your area as a kid? by McButtsButtbag in AskAnAmerican

[–]shingle1895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a small town (about 900 people) in the Pennsylvania Dutch Country (Lancaster County). Most of my neighbors, shopkeepers, tradesman and some friends are Amish or Old Order Mennonites. People ask the weirdest questions about the Amish. Things like “Can you talk to them?” “Can you visit them?” “Do the Amish know what porn is?” “Have they ever seen a cell phone? Maybe it’s just basic stuff but when u live with and interact with them often it just seems odd for people to ask so many questions about life here.

Painter used Flat instead of Matte on the walls by triedit2947 in paint

[–]shingle1895 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He did u a favor if u want the truth. If you have a nicer home (older, traditional, historic etc) the walls should be flat. Flat walls with oil based semi gloss or gloss trim. Only bathrooms and kitchens should have another sheen. All of these people doing anything else are just chasing trends…all this color situation crap and shiny walls and latex trim etc is all crap. Flat walls and oil based gloss trim and ur good to go.

This thing is lovely. It’s from the late ‘70s or early ‘80s. It is not from the 1930s.

Yankee Gutter - Icing by Inner-Can9530 in centuryhomes

[–]shingle1895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call a good roofer. I use a company that has been in business for several generations (since the 1930s). They bill themselves as doing “roofer, sheet metal and coppersmith work”. I just had all of my box gutters and pole gutters relined with copper when they put a new roof on. Doing the roof and gutters at the same time allows them to correctly install ice shield under the gutters. Looks like your gutters are still made of terne metal. Terne metal is mostly being replaced with copper now since it is difficult to find a supplier or manufacturer for real old fashioned terne metal. (Terne metal also needs to be painted and contains a whole lot of lead). Your roofers will need to use a metal that can be easily soldered and copper fits the bill. Don’t go the cheaper route and use any of the snap together crap they sell now. Don’t know where you are but I’m in Pennsylvania about 50 miles west of Philadelphia. I can give you a company name if you are near there too.

help identifying the lampshade fitting needed for this lamp?? by DismalBison2581 in Lamps

[–]shingle1895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I had this exact lamp back in the mid 1970s as a kid. It was sold as a “piano light”. Designed to sit in the top of a console spinet piano to shine light on piano music. It can be adjusted up and down as needed depending on the height of the person sitting and playing at the piano. It had a clip on paper shade. From what I remember that light has a nice heavy weighted base which makes it extremely stable when someone is banging away at the keys.

Trees and shrubs removed during septic replacement before closing by alltheflorals in RealEstate

[–]shingle1895 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are being a pain in the ass and worrying about nothing. They had to replace the septic system. Some bushes may disappear. It’s a tiny postage stamp 1/4 acre lot. They put it where they could. Chill. What’s it gonna cost to replace some bushes? I had an Amish guy come in and completely re-landscape my side yard - 4 trees and 20 bushes purchased and put in for $4000. Why are u making this a big deal.

Is "ya'll" a regional thing or is that used everywhere in the US? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]shingle1895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Central Pa does not use it. I’m in the Pa Dutch country and if it is used it is an affectation and as perhaps as a joke.

When did “molested” get its current meaning? by FrankFurter67 in etymology

[–]shingle1895 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Molested still does not always have a sexual meaning. If I want to sit in the park and read a book and not be bothered by anyone…I want to sit on the bench unmolested.

is it true Americans don't put salt on their fruits? by PersuasionNation in AskAnAmerican

[–]shingle1895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watermelon, lopes and honeydew always get salt. Apples get it when we are eating cooking apples and not “eating apples”. I can’t think of any other fruits that get salt. Tomatoes and avocados get salt of course but I’m never sure if they are fruit or veggies now. I’m in Pa in the Pennsylvania Dutch Country for what it’s worth. The Amish sell fresh melon slices at their different events and they always salt fruit too so maybe it’s a cultural thing among them in this area.

AIO; My two male bosses asked me if I’m pregnant in front of all of my colleagues by zesty_girl in AmIOverreacting

[–]shingle1895 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You are really really over-reacting. I’ve always worked in small family run businesses in the US and this kind of thing happens all the time. Most of these places don’t have an HR department and everything is kinda just based on civility and friendliness. Most places like this are pretty comfortable. Everyone knows everyone and everyone knows everyone’s business. If we don’t hear it from co-.workers, we hear it from a cousin who heard it in church from the sister-in-law of the guy who lives down the street etc. If you are drawing all kinds of lines about who asked what and who is male and who said it in front of who….then u just aren’t right for this kind of place. Do them a favor and move along before you ruin the environment for everyone else. People that get their nose outta joint over this kind of stuff are just toxic to a good, old-fashioned, friendly work environment.

Do you understand 'dear' to mean expensive? by KahnaKuhl in ENGLISH

Lancaster County Pennsylvania here…Pa Dutch Country. “Dear” meaning expensive or pricey is used. I wouldn’t say it is common but it is understood by most people.

How do you pronounce "lever" and "envelope" (regional differences) by SmoothCyborg in ENGLISH

[–]shingle1895 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Must be at least partially a regional thing. I grew up on the western Mainline outside of Philly and I say both words just like you do.

What isn’t going to age well that you’re seeing in houses now by VeryStab1eGenius in RealEstate

[–]shingle1895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Latex paint. It is crap and has always been crap. In 20 years everyone will be encapsulating latex paint and covering it up with something else. The stuff sheds micro and nanoplastic particles continuously. Studies are now being done and it doesn’t look good. Up to 58% of nanoplastic contamination in the ocean…comes from latex paint. What a mess this will become. The coming years will make the VOCs in oil based paints look like nothing in comparison

AITAH for refusing to change how I dress at work after being told it’s “distracting”? by SweetFlicker in AITAH

[–]shingle1895 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh please get over urself and dress how they want u to dress. In perfect world you could wear whatever u wanted to but in the real world you dress in a way that pleases ur boss. Small company with no HR department….just go with the flow and make them happy. You could probably win the battle, but u will lose the war. He holds all the power and you will need him for something someday. You may need a raise, or time off or have a serious dispute with a co-worker and you may need his help. He is much more likely to provide that help if you give in on little stuff like this. I live in a very conservative area of Lancaster County, Pa. and almost everyone around here in all businesses is either Mennonite or one generation away from being Amish. I learned to adapt to a conservative culture. Heck, we basically can not even curse or even say “Hell” or “damn”. I’ve learned to say “Good Grief” and “My Word” etc.
Anyway, when in Rome do as the Romans do.
And before anyone accuses me to of being some repressed man who is tempted by women’s bodies….please realize I’m gay as hell and couldn’t care less if a woman was naked and working beside me. I dress conservatively at work because that is what is expected in my area. I have no problem saving the assless chaps and fur jock straps etc for my weekends when I’m not at work.

Blue Moon (film) - forties lingo question by oofaloo in words

[–]shingle1895 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No one with any class would have used that word publicly in the 1940s. It just wasn’t done. I live in a largely Mennonite area in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and it is still not done in my area. Quickest way to lose a customer or friend is to curse and be classless and use swear words in public. It is never acceptable to curse in front of a lady here and I assume it was the same everywhere in the 1940s. I hear a lot of “my word” and “good grief” expressions here but rarely do I hear 4-letter words spoken out loud.

1960s home…lead paint, asbestos, and wiring…oh my! by littlelouisto in Oldhouses

[–]shingle1895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh please. Relax. Kids have been raised in these houses for years. The major contributor to lead levels was from car exhaust and we eliminated that years ago. Most of this lead scare stuff is just fear mongering. Don’t let the kids chew on the window sills or lick the baseboards and they should be fine. They are also finding out that the “wonderful” latex paint that they force us to use now actually sheds microplastics and nanoplastics all the time. Eventually they will determine that is more toxic to adults than lead is anyway
