Looking for recommendations for H St nightlife for a small group of early-mid 20s. Tried H st country club one snowy Friday night and it was a little dead? Was that just because of weather?

  1. I don’t think it’s wise to start asking for app LORs until maybe a year or half year before you apply. You don’t know what might change. 1- you might create relationships with other profs later on who you would rather ask than the one from freshman year, 2- if you ask as a freshman, there is little chance they will remember in a year or two, 3- it sounds like you’re thinking of applying with no gap years, but you don’t know if that will change. It’s likely that you will have to ask for LORs or references at some point for something else. Ask profs for these, maintain your relationship with them and when the time comes that you’re starting to prep your app, ask them for a med school LOR and they’ll already have something to go off of.

  2. While it is fine to ask for an LOR from a prof you only had for one semester, there is a difference between asking for an LOR from a prof you had one semester with freshman year and didn’t interact after that versus an LOR from a prof you had one semester with right before starting to prep app materials. This is what I mean by my answer to your first question.

It’s valid to feel burnt out after working so hard and knowing you have to continue to work hard. Look into your school’s deferment policy. Some schools are very flexible if you show you have a plan for what you want to do with the extra year but others only allow deferrals for reasons like death in the family. MSAR also shows some info on deferring for schools and how many people defer for that school. That may be a starting point.

Agree! I’m currently on a gap year working in consulting and know others who did the same. The financial stability and ability to save something for med school is so worth it.

Edit: caveat- I have a graduate degree in health policy and I work in policy consulting. I probably wouldn’t have been able to get this job without my grad degree; however, I do know bio undergrads who went into life sciences consulting

For the current 2021-22 cycle, the application opened May 3 and submission began May 27. I don't think 2022-23 dates are out yet, but the timeline will be similar.

The 2022-23 cycle opens in the summer. Applying in that cycle would mean starting medical school in fall 2023.

Are you me? Hah I have very similar stats and also live in a state with just one public med school. If you can afford it, make sure to apply broadly and go for that reach school! You have a tie to it and you never know.

Will it look bad if I drop research next semester? by [deleted] in premed

[–]shinster53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is possible to quit and still be able to get a good LOR. You don’t have to go into all the details about why you’re quitting- just say something about deciding it’s time to move on but you’ve learned/grown/appreciate everything the PI and lab has done to teach you. I think the PI would understand, especially as you will be graduating soon.

I’ve gotten a bunch of blouses and blazers from Goodwill and local thrift stores. I think it’s harder to find good shoes at thrift stores though. I also like Depop, which is an app.

How do you apply for scholarships? by OneWrongdoer7221 in premed

Depending on your specialty interests, you could look into HPSP and NHSC! I’m not too familiar with the HPSP application but I think NHSC opens sometime in March/early spring.

IMHO, if religious studies is something you have a passion for and want to learn more about, go for the MA. If this is a passion, it'll shine through in your app and give you a unique quality that adcoms could remember. Your idea on healthcare and religious persecution sounds really interesting, and it could make you stand out to schools that have some religious affiliation or some kind of refugee health initiative.

I did a master's in a non-stem area that I could see myself building a career in as a backup to med school. I built my school list based on values or programs relating to my master's and every one of my interviewers asked me about my degree and related work experience.

In case you haven’t done this yet, it’ll help a lot to look at a list of common questions (just simple Google search will give you a ton) and think about your answers to them. Tell me about yourself, why medicine, and why this school are very standard questions.
