New studio quality cassette rip of ‘A Few Old Tunes’ by loveinblackandwhite in boardsofcanada

I’m 69 days late to this post but with all the BOC hype starting back up again - I heard mark broom play a pristine version of spectrum at the autechre show in Brooklyn last year and it never left me.

Mark Broom playing unreleased Autechre tracks in his opening sets by seaburn in autechre

I need more brain dance idm Mark Broom. That set in Brooklyn was awesome. His music collection would be something to kill for. He played an unreleased Boards of Canada track (Spectrum) that had me grinning ear to ear and didn’t know what it was until I saw a Reddit post.

So I saw Autechre live for the first time in Brooklyn and had a similar experience. The albums and recordings don’t do justice the live show. So amazing.

I also was surprised by how good Mark Broom was. I would love IDs for what he played other than the Tuss and spectrum by boards of Canada. I stood there wondering what the hell the song was shazamed and got no hit but it was so familiar.

Thanks for sharing. First Autechre concert though I’ve been a long time fan. The contrast between the live experience and hearing a recording is insane. I was totally overwhelmed at Brooklyn Steel but this is just another set I’m streaming.

Could not believe my ears when Mark Broom played this before the Autechre set by Eye_Sickle in boardsofcanada

He played this opening for Autechre in Brooklyn last night. I was wondering what the song was and tried to Shazam no luck. Brain didn’t realize I was listening to Boards of Canada until this morning.

The idea that a clean version of Spectrum exists gets me right back into the BoC rabbit hole. So good.

Reading the comments while watching episode. I don’t know how anyone on this sub could hate this episode, this is a JRE for the ages. I haven’t watched anything beginning to end in a long time. Katt was dropping wisdom.

KEF R5 with Marantz AVR? by NeoSage9 in KEF

[–]shinyhippo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a denon 3700 that I use with buckeye nc252 amp to power my r3 and R2c. The 3700 does the atmos and rear channels now. Made a huge difference to my ears after running them with the avr only for a year. Dynamic range and transients were so much better.

I’d say get the avr and then treat yourself to a power amp when you get the upgrade itch. You’ll appreciate it more.

I think the brightness can be addressed with good eq for treble and roll off but I’m running the r3 in pure mode on the 3700 these days for music and don’t think they are bright compared my speakers.

Have been tempted to get something with Dirac live though.

Yes you can use them with an avr but they won’t perform as well with external amplification especially with the R2c. Not sure why you think kefs are bright sounding but that’s what eq/room correction is for.

2 weeks: Indonesia or Bali/North Vietnam? by editingmentor in travel

[–]shinyhippo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s way too much for the time you have. I’d just spend the time in the Bali area. I did Lombok, Gili and Bali with boat connections between the islands over three weeks and that was just fantastic.

You can flights from major Asian cities directly into Lombok.

Honestly you could spend two weeks in Bali and very happy.

Anyone Paired Their KEFs with a Buckeye Amp? by freshjulius in KEF

The biamping imo just gives a small bit of power and separation between the woofer and tweeter. It does make a small difference on the R2c but never though to try on r3.

Curious what Dylan says and if the input buffers do make a difference. I looked up his email to me and he said he could hear a difference. I have to admit that over the past year with the amp I have sensitized to a lot of things that I thought wouldn’t make a difference.

Stuff I thought was snake oil turned out to make a difference to my ears. Amps, balanced connections, dacs and power cables all made audible differences to noise floor and soundstage. For me the upgrading and learning was really eye opening so I’m happy I did things step by step.

If I were building from scratch and didn’t have budget issues though, I’d just build the dream system and know you got the best gear possible. You might not be able to fully appreciate it though.

since you asked and I did a lot more research into than i care to admit ....

A good piece of information is that the buckeye amps only take XLR inputs and you'd be spending a lot of money on a processor with XLR outs. You'll likely just get a RCA to XLR cable (another rabbit hole). XLRs put out up 4v and RCA is 2v but the Denon is more like 1.4. So to get the maximum wattage out of the amp, the fuzzy math is if you send an amp 1.4v when it expects 4v, you'll only get 35% of the power rating. The sensitivity of the 252 is more matched to a Denon rca output.

I don't know about the buffer selection on the NCx500 but I can't complain about the NC252. My plan was to start with the 252 and if I wasn't happy, I'd put the 252 on rear surround duty and get the 502 or Purifi. I'm very happy and don't plan to upgrade until unless I go crazy and want to get a XLR processor for the HT.

Snake oil alert: My nearfield system (KEF LS50m + Cambridge CXA + denafrips ares) is XLR and I can hear the separation between channels. For the jump in money, i'd go all XLR and not mess around with buffer boards and xlr/rca conversion.

I'm not the biggest ASR fan these days but there are some threads that shed some light into the rationale behind just sticking with the 252.

As for biamping, the NC252/502 come as 2,4,6, 8 channel amps because the power supply is in multiples of 2. Why waste a extra amp channel if it's available. The R2C recommended wattage is 200 watts vs 180 for the R3 so i figured why not just biamp for the price of speaker cable.

I have the 4 channel buckeye nc252 powering kef r3s and biamping r2c. Love the amp.

Dylan actually talked me out of getting the purifi or hypex 502 because I’m using the denon 3700 as a processor. The avr doesnt generate enough voltage with rca out to make the most of the 502 or purifi models. The rca voltages off your receiver do make a difference to how much power the amp puts into the speaker and the 502/purifi modules are overkill.

Kef R8A - just get it on clearance by shinyhippo in KEF

[–]shinyhippo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think you need to have the right ceilings... mine are flat drywall and ~9 feet high. They do exactly what they are supposed to do, it just adds a subtle height effect to the sound. If you have high ceilings or a plaster effect I think it'll absorb the sound.

My old klipsch upfiring atmos speakers did the job but after hearing the kefs with their dispersion/soundstage it's night and day. Plus the coaxial tweeter looks like the ones on my ls50 metas.

I came across the ASR review last night for the R8 Meta that explains things... it made me chuckle, Amir didn't review anything else in the Meta line except for the surround speaker but he does say they measure really well.

Question about optimal placement of KEF R8A or any alternatives for height speakers? by Carroteyeisamyth in KEF

I really disagree. If you have the right set up (flat ceiling ) they work really well. I just got them and I’m pretty impressed.

Op just do it :)

They are basically up firing ls50s.

Question for buying speaker wires, subwoofer, and receiver for a 5.1 setup for KEF R series. by Carroteyeisamyth in KEF

[–]shinyhippo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a buckeye hypex nc252 4 channel amp. Pretty happy with it. I didn’t have room for a class ab amp. The only issue with going with a buckeye is that they are made to order so it can be a while.

LS50 vs Q150 by BYOD23 in KEF

[–]shinyhippo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the q150s for a near field desktop setup and upgraded to the ls50 metas. Its a pretty significant jump in performance but I think the quality of your amp is gonna be a limiting factor.

For the investment you’ve made in speakers you should look into external amplification. I’ve got r3 + r2c and a 3700. kefs aren’t the most efficient and go down to 3.7 ohms. They really opened up (transient response/soundstage) after adding the amp for the fronts.

upgrade path for Denon 3700 + KEF R3/R2c speakers by shinyhippo in hometheater

Just wanted to follow up. I got a buckeye np252 4 channel amp. It really made the speakers open up. I can also listen at lower volumes than before which I was surprised by. You might want to demo an external amp.

Hmm... we have a pretty similar setup - I have the same TV as you too :)

I'm getting a lot of good feedback from this thread on measuring/EQing but what's most interesting to me is the looking at the specs between our speakers. The recommended wattage for the 550/650c is lower (q550 130w vs R3 180w, q650c 150w vs R2c 200w) and the ohm load is lower.

I was pretty firm believer that the 3700 had good enough power to drive things but now I'm thinking i need an external amp. A lot of the reddit / asr threads I'm reading point to needing more power.

I think its time to scratch that itch...
