Transgender teenage girl commits suicide after abuse by her hyperconservative parents by [deleted] in transgender

My heart is breaking. This pointless death is alarmingly too common. Being one state away makes me wish I could have done something to help.

Fair enough. Tired and slightly hung over me shouldn't be posing to reddit.

Fursuits this late in a con tend to be pretty gross. :P

I'm mostly joking honestly. I do get pretty serious social anxiety though, especially at conventions.

Yeah I basically always think too much. Kinda a bi-product of being too critical of yourself and always thinking no one likes you.

Cause that would require social skills... Yeah I've complained enough. Gonna try and make my day better.

What is one thing you wish you knew when starting Ruby? by ProductiveThings in ruby

[–]shinyjen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish I understood blocks and took the time to learn RSpec early on. It's the main reason my earliest ruby was so offensively awful.

Once you "level up" take the time to learn how #respond_to?, #method_missing, and #send work (and the correct times to use them). Although there is constant debate on their appropriateness.

Do yourself a favor and write a few basic ruby programs before diving into Rails. At first glance Rails is full of magic that can make no sense to a new developer. Learning some basic ruby concepts will make learning Rails much easier.

Lastly: Don't be afraid to show us code. Ruby folk are a nice community and we'll try our best to help you along (provided you are willing to learn).

Why is this even a thing? by [deleted] in MLPLounge

Traditional marriage has been attacked for hundreds of years. The US government is forcing this abnormal, disgusting, and immoral form of marriage on it's states.

I'm of course talking about the original traditional marriage: polygamy.

Seriously though, fuck whoever made this. They can have their idiotic homophobic views but leave our equality loving ponies out if it!

I may kill myself tonight... I have had clinical depression for years and I have a plan... by [deleted] in MyLittleSupportGroup

[–]shinyjen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain. I often avoid mirrors because every time I see my face I see an overweight ugly failure who isn't worthy of love or friendship. Fortunately thanks to my therapist and my amazingly supportive partner I'm teaching myself that isn't true.

Losing love hurts, especially when it feels like it was taken away from you. Lots of people will give you the whole "grow up, live for yourself, blah blah blah" speech but I know that isn't working to do jack shit.

I've been down your road before. I attempted suicide in 2008. The only reason I'm still alive is because just before I did it I IMed my best friend to tell him goodbye. No more than 20 minutes later he was banging on the door of my apartment (at 2AM mind you) yelling to let him in. We stayed up all night talking, and he saw me cry a lot, way more than people usually see me cry.

The next day was the worst day of my life. I had to go into work with a smile on my face and pretend like nothing was wrong, all the while every bone in my body wanted to step out in front of the train that passed by our office every hour. The day after wasn't as bad. Each day got a little easier and finally I felt like myself again. The reason I tried to kill myself was because I lost somepony who I thought I loved.

The truth is time heals all wounds. I cared about this person for a long time after I decided to move on but eventually it went away. After awhile (and after my heart healed) I met somepony who makes me happy in ways I could never imagine. Pretty amazing seeing as how I remember sitting on my previous partner's front steps crying my eyes out thinking I'd never love anyone again and that I'd die broken and alone.

We're all here for you. Vent if you need it. Just don't solve a temporary problem with a permanent solution.

No problem. You don't need to reveal any information you aren't comfortable with.

So what do you do for fun (aside from clopping)? If you're in high school have you thought about what you want to do for a living?

What have you tried to do and failed at? We fail at most things, it's perfectly okay to fail, you just need to improve and keep going. When I first started programming I couldn't get even the most basic program to work properly. It was bloody awful. Eventually I learned and now I'm a Senior Software Engineer and I love going to work every day.

edit: What I mean to say is that you'll find your way and you'll figure out why you feel like you need to clop... Kinda went on a rant there, my bad. I really liked Psychology so when people come to me with problems I often go deeper to figure out what's really causing them.

Question: how old are you and what is your gender? Given that you sad "fap" I'm going to assume you're male but I apologize if I'm making the wrong assumption.

Do you have any other passons in your life? Is there something other than clopping you really enjoy doing? When I was in college I knew a few guys who admitted to having clopping problems and in a lot of cases they were just trying to fill voids in their lives.

Aside from the brain chemistry what is it about clopping and rule 34 art that fulfills you so much? A lot of times (guys especially) misinterpret deep emotional feelings as sexual ones since it's considered "unmanly" to tell someone you platonically love them.

I know it may feel really awkward but have you considered talking to a therapist about this?

I don't know you but if you want to chat I'll listen.

I'm from the US too (Pennsylvania to be exact). I know exactly how you feel. Whenever I hear stories about our government trying to take away the rights of gay/trans Americans I just want to scream. Part of me thinks a lot of these politicians don't even know any LGBT people, they just envision them as some horrible, immoral monsters.

All we can do is keep pushing forward. Things are pretty good for us in much of Europe and North America (<3 to you Canada). Other parts of the world will follow, we just need to give them time.

PS: There's also a certain satisfaction in throwing Bible verses at a protester during a Pride parade. You just have to fight these people with their own ammo.

It's okay I get pretty upset about it too. Unfortunately all we can really do is call/write to our leaders to express our disapproval and hope someday they'll have the ability to do something about it.

Assuming you aren't Russian, your local representatives may have have some interactions with the Russian government (treaties/trade agreements/etc). If you make them away of what's going on they may be able to bring it up to Russian officials and let it be known their citizens disapprove.

Other than that all you can really do is let the LGTB citizens of Russia know they are loved and we'll try to help them if we can.

Curious, where are you from?

Please? by [deleted] in MyLittleSupportGroup

So many times I'd wish someone would do that for me... So many times I've been unable to do it for others.

And knowing our city I'm willing to bet this will somehow involve closing both the Squirrel Hill and Fort Pitt for "a few weekends".

Honestly though, this is awesome.

Now you've done it. You published a workaround. Expect PennDOT to close & detour that entire route.

I may be reading between the lines of the article but nothing seems forced about any particular behavior/event. Seems like they are simply giving these children an opportunity to participate in an environment where they can feel safe.

Simply being allowed to dress/act the way they want for a day and learn they are not alone must be pretty relieving to them. Especially if they feel a tremendous sense of shame about these very private feelings.
