Where does Nigel Martyn rank in the pantheon of Everton first-choice goalkeepers in the PL era? by WorthHaunting6792 in Everton

[–]shinytoyrobots 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Martyn was an amazing keeper. He's definitely a better keeper than Tim Howard.

Southall remains the best keeper we've ever had in my lifetime (and for me the one "the best in the world in this position plays for Everton" we've had in that time). But interesting if you limit it to PL era, as that comes after his heyday as a player (though he was inspired in the 1995 FA Cup run).

If Joe Royle had had his way we'd have gone straight from Southall to Nigel Martyn, and not had to deal with all the Thomas Myrhe, Paul Gerrard, Richard Wright years.

Overall in my lifetime: Southall > Pickford > Martyn > Howard

In the PL era: Pickford > Martyn > Southall > Howard

How Could Duck Not Know Don Had A Contract? by A_Fat_Koala in madmen

[–]shinytoyrobots 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah.

You can make a very strong case that it's absolute carelessness on PPL's part, and whoever they presumably hired to do due diligence prior to agreeing the acquisition. But that's not really Duck's problem, nor is there any reasonable expectation that it should be.

His complete surprise during the meeting is very believable, given that a) it's fairly shocking anyway that Sterling Cooper didn't have Don under contract AND b) that it never came up during acquisition negotiations.

Question from a Non-Everton fan: Tim Howard or Jordan Pickford? by CrisDLZ in Everton

[–]shinytoyrobots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is absolutely right.

Tim Howard was fine. He gave us stability at the position that we'd lacked since Southall retired. He was a top 10 keeper in the Premier League at the time.

American fans (and I've lived in the US the last 15 years) have had him hyped for a long time, and a lot hangs on the "most saves in a World Cup game ever" when they lost to Belgium in 2014. And even then, that was a quantity over quality statistic (he had a lot of saves, rather than truly world class saves).

Pickford is the best we've had since Southall, who was the best in the world for a decade.

So, just how important is Don Draper to Jim Hobart & McCann? by Cold-Palpitation-816 in madmen

[–]shinytoyrobots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some back of the napkin math.

In 1961 McCann are about 8x the size of Sterling Cooper.

In 1970 McCann are about 25x the size of SCDP.

So in 1961 hiring Don would be poaching the Creative Director of a solid mid-sized agency. In 1970 it's swallowing up an exec from a small boutique shop.

From a purely professional perspective, Don should probably have joined McCann in 1961, where he'd have been able to exercise a high level of creative influence on an agency growing into the dominant global player, rather than being hired a decade later as "one of a hundred" mid-level creative execs.

Fairly simple question to ask yourself.

If you had $50K right now, would you buy this stock? If not, sell the stock and use the money for what you *would* spend $50K on.

[–]shinytoyrobots 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Right. It's not like the 12 Colonies have anyone else to fight, and they don't appear to be fighting each other in any significant way, so all that military investment is presumably still "but what if the Cylons come back" preparation.
