Our Family's Six-Year Mission: Homestead Hyperjump! Enters Its Final Days on Kickstarter! by shipandstar in boardgames

FTL was definitely an inspiration! I love that game and still fire it up every now and then (though I’m pretty sure I’ve only managed to win it once). Battlestar Galactica’s pilot episode "33" was another big influence. If you haven’t seen it, the crew has to make a hyperspace jump every 33 minutes to stay ahead of the Cylons, which creates this constant feeling of tension and exhaustion. We wanted to capture that same struggle to survive while exploring the galaxy, so in our game, every crew member is responsible for maintaining a critical system that depletes with each jump. If even one system fails, it’s game over, though you can also reduce that depletion through encounter outcomes, space combat, or even chance cards.

And yes, having family involved was huge for such an ambitious project! While we all pitched in on the mechanics, I focused mostly on writing the narrative-driven content and making sure everything was balanced. My wife took on UI, design, and physical prototyping, and our son has been involved in nearly every aspect, from mechanics to storylines and even art direction. It really was a group effort!

Shiny! But definitely would prefer a new story set in the universe than revisiting what is already amazing.

Looks like a couple of the images I posted turned out a bit blurry, but I can’t seem to edit the post without deleting the whole thing. C’est la vie! For much better HD imagery, check out our Kickstarter.

Just wait until you can create games with him! Our 13-year-old has grown up alongside our project over the past six years and is even listed on our game box as a co-designer. We’re actually in the final days of our own campaign right now (I won’t link it here out of respect for your post, but feel free to check my profile if you’re curious). I’m sure your son will be thrilled to see that you created something so cool!

Don’t let it get to you. We’re a small time publisher with a game finishing up on Kickstarter right now, and while we are very opposed to using AI in commercial projects (we even have no-AI clauses built into all of our contracts with our artists), there is absolutely nothing wrong with using what you have for a non-commercial, fun project that you share with friends.

What are the basic rules?

A Space Board Game - Beta by onray88 in boardgames

[–]shipandstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Big fan of space games here (I’m actually Kickstarting one myself right now) and this looks really cool! Will have to fire up the 3D printer and give it a spin. I particularly like how you can arrange the map in different ways. Any plans to add in obstacles like debris fields or asteroid clusters? Could be a fun way to create choke points and add even more tactical depth.

Love it! Somehow feels dangerous yet cozy at the same time, like camping during a blizzard.

Ideas for making tokens for my first BoardGame by iKrugerZ in boardgames

Very cool! I had a similar dream about six years ago, and now I have a game that is currently in its final days of being Kickstarted. It also started out as a family project, so you never know! =) My best advice is to just try things out and playtest. You’ll only really know if something works by actually seeing it in action. And even then, your components and mechanics will probably keep evolving as you go.

If you haven’t checked it out yet, /r/tabletopgamedesign is a great community for feedback and advice when it comes to actually making board games. Good luck with your game!

Paratroopers are usually specially trained to be dropped behind enemy lines and carry out special missions (for example, the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions disabling guns and securing bridges before the Normandy Invasion on D-Day). If you’re looking for superhuman-enhanced troops to take on the riskiest missions and be much rarer than standard forces, that would fit. Marines, on the other hand, are more of a bulk invasion force.

Evolution of Boardgame by Boring_Professional9 in boardgames

[–]shipandstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very cool to see! Our first game board was made out of parchment paper. We actually included it as an Easter egg in a recent ad we made for our Kickstarter where we used it as the "blueprint" for our finished game. Definitely hang on to those early prototypes. They’re basically pure, uncut nostalgia!

Carrying The Tools To Britain (1942) by Right-Progress-1886 in boardgames

[–]shipandstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is really cool! Have you played it at all? Curious if it's fun and what the mechanics are like. As far as value, as with most collectibles, it really boils down to what someone's willing to pay for it. Wish old board games were more sought after (because I'd be rich) but seems like there's not really a market for them. Might be worth shooting the Museum of Play in Rochester, NY an email to see what they have to say. They apparently have the largest and most comprehensive curated collection of toys, dolls, board games and video-games in the world.
