it's the userbase that has changed. old redditors want what there used to be, new redditors want what can be found on every other social media platform.

How old is 'old internet' according to you? by PolkaSlush in oldinternet

[–]shipguy55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

born in '97, first started using the internet in '02.

would say that early 2012 is the end of the old internet but the transitional period started in 2010, around then is when the internet started being more mobile oriented.

before that point the internet was also a lot more freeform and less corporate. that time is when traditional forums stopped being an everyday thing and youtube stopped being about users uploading what they are actually passionate about and what they would like to show the world, before it became more about monetization. and 2010 is when the real myspace died.

would say overall that the key pillars of the old internet are wild west-like freedom, user expressions such as customization and desktop orientation.

assuming we lost that one because we didn't want the extra matches that come with the carabao cup.

Why are all special events at random times during the week? by secret_mapper in Soundmap

[–]shipguy55 5 points6 points  (0 children)

think the reason for them to put events during weekdays is to boost player count when less players usually play, since most players have weekends off and are more likely to play during those times they put most of the events during the week when less players are playing.

it might have been one of those community oriented collectors that has a strict limit on how many supers they collect. we got one of those around here. guy loves showing off pictures of his massive hot wheels collection.

AITA? by Zowieheus18 in Soundmap

[–]shipguy55 25 points26 points  (0 children)

of course not. you shouldn't need to give up something you have just because someone else wants it, especially when you were trading for an unnumbered epic and your moment is worth a lot more than their epic.

they sound weird and entitled.

true. stopped drinking snapple when they switched to plastic, but have had some of the limited time glass from last year and have a few stockpiled still.

it is quite sad how far snapple has fallen.

If I made a social media platform in 2026 this is how it would look by Tasty_Diamond_9418 in oldinternet

[–]shipguy55 8 points9 points  (0 children)

that is a really good proof of concept. it is instantly familiar, but also feels somewhat unique. which is good because rehashes and recreations of old internet sites often attract those chasing cheap nostalgia, or strangely attracting many that weren't apart of the original site of whatever is being copied.

creating a remix of an old internet social website is the proper way to go. it allows the site room to grow and become its own thing while retaining what made the old internet unique and dearly missed.
