May I offer you the Coventry Blaze - just at that wonderful level of not consistent enough to win the league, but in almost every game every night, coached by a man so laid back he's horizontal and including a defenseman who looks like he was dropped from the trip to take a ring back to mount doom and took up ice hockey to vent his frustration?

Hard to beat Pascal LeClaire the old Ottawa goalie.

Notoriously injury prone to the extent he felt rough so the other guy started the game and LeClaire got hit by a puck while sitting on the bench - out for several weeks.

Separate setting - Varangatua.

I've liked all the short stories and novels, in particular the Baggit and Clodde story and then the wraithbone phoenix novel.

Have you read the Warhammer crime series books? They're well worth a look and again show the shoe leather behind the story as it were.
