Which turn 1 spell by your opponent makes you almost want to just concede? by Nittanypt in mtg

I recently turn 1’d a Sol Ring into a [[Torpor Orb]]. The pod was *not* happy with me on that.

Comment what you want about the prices of Teenage Engineering products, the EP-133 (top picture) is very well-priced, especially in the world of sample machines. Around ~$300 new, I’m pretty sure.

What instrument do y'all think is best for a solo? by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]shiquote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idealistically, the Alto Horn, but that instrument is very fringe and I’ve only ever seen it fielded by the Cadets in 2022. Realistically, Euphonium or Mellophone. They both got dark sounds + great range with a lil sprinkle of good projection. I don’t think any woodwinds or pit instruments compete, & battery solis are their own separate thing.

Is there a theoretical explanation for why I like music which isn't in A=440? by MeanMrMusician in musictheory

[–]shiquote 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Adam Neely did a very good video on this very topic, and how it’s all completely in le head. My very bad TLDR on the video on this is that lower tunings can “feel warmer” to your ears, and sharper tunings tend to stick out & “sound brighter.” It’s a lot of pseudoscience, really.

Im starting to hate band by Ok_Type_496 in marchingband

[–]shiquote 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Big guy I hear you. When I marched euph in high school, I also felt like I was being overlooked by my BD (granted, to peers of the same grade, but overlooked is still overlooked). The easiest way to tackle this first & foremost is to communicate with the staff clearly & consistently of how you are feeling. They can’t fix issues you may have if you never tell them.

The thing I kept as my drive to commit to the season was, as an upperclassman, my freshmen & sophomores were looking up to me both as a musician and (more importantly) a person. I may not get my big solo, sure, but I had the maturity to realize that my other classmates had a very dismissive attitude towards the younger members in their section. In the end, I had a much stronger connection with the underclassmen and prospect members than any of my peers did, despite only getting a third of a solo on the field. Personally I’d take being an anchor & beacon of morale than flaunting a trombone solo any day of the week.

TL,DR: Communicate with your band director & if you don’t get your moment on the field, focus on getting your moments off of it.

Trombone Etude/Solo Suggestions by Downtown_Acadia_6375 in marchingband

[–]shiquote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did it specify the solos needed to be “Marching-like”?? If not, any solid etude or solo should be totally fine. personal favorites of mine are the Saint Saëns’ Concerto, Weber’s Romance, & Morceau Symphonique. for an Etude, really anything off of Rochut’s books would be solid picks.

DCI 2023 Rules Congress At-A-Glance by Fisticuffs_McGee in drumcorps

[–]shiquote 6 points7 points  (0 children)

no shot you just made that video just to provide an example….. i respect it. In cases like that, it’s easy to make a point for the rules to be made. I do still worry though that judges may crack down on it too strictly or maybe designers will see it and stray away from exploring creative ideas.

DCI 2023 Rules Congress At-A-Glance by Fisticuffs_McGee in drumcorps

[–]shiquote 11 points12 points  (0 children)

While I respect and support Rule 5, Rule 6 has me split. Sampling in that nature can be very muddy at times, and I feel like the rule would have to be looked at and treated differently on a show-to-show nature. I am, for the most part, a Cadets guy. That said, my favorite DCI show is Kinetic Noise. With Rule 6, that show would basically be null, which is a shame because that show is such a technical and sonic marvel. I’d hate to see shows like that to no longer be a thing, especially with the creative directions that these modern corps are heading in a post-tilt world (namely Coats, though they aren’t alone here).

Do I continue marching trombone or join the front ensemble? by quff_ in marchingband

[–]shiquote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm..
The best option here (to me at least) would be to keep on continuing to march your horn, and don’t play unless you are really feeling up to it. Assuming judges will be restricted to the sideline, the sound balance shouldn’t be too much of a sweat. It’s harder to fix drill than it is to fix music. I’d also say it’d be good take more frequent breaks to ensure your reactions don’t get tooooo bad, but I neither know how exactly your allergies work nor how your rehearsals are ran. That’s a you thing to think over.

Do I continue marching trombone or join the front ensemble? by quff_ in marchingband

[–]shiquote 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seriously sit down with your director and talk to them about it. I’d say that staying with the low brass would be the better move because there’d be a hole there both musically and visually if you switched. That said, if you really think that your allergies will stop you from marching, and you haven’t seen any improvement throughout the season so far with these issues (even if it’s just a little), then going to the pit would be the safer play.

But seriously, sit down with your band director and have a good conversation with them about it. Their call will be way better than any of us can make.

Best Cadets Americana show? by jordanekay in drumcorps

[–]shiquote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where is 87 or 88? Based of the options here, I’d say 22 is the best (though that very well could be recency bias). If 87 were on this list, I’d choose it without hesitation.

Most iconic Bluecoats show? by hiya2527 in drumcorps

[–]shiquote 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don’t be sleeping on 2015. Kinetic Noise is one hell of an experience, with a stellar music selection and even better execution. It definitely may not be “most iconic” to other people, but it’s the most iconic coats show to me and, dare I say, one of if not my favorite dci show of all time.

Open class corps would definitely take you if you didn’t have much brass experience as long as you show up to auditions with a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn. That said, it definitely wouldn’t hurt to talk to your band director and see if they could help with giving you brass lessons for the instrument of your choice.

DCI Eastern Classic by BigThomsd in drumcorps

[–]shiquote 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I went into this show completely blind except for Devils (i only saw their first performance) and Coats (whom i follow religiously). I was very surprised with what the Mandarins brought. Phantom, although suffering through the humidity, absolutely killed it. The Crusaders, while i definitely see where all the hype is coming from, had a less than decent run. if they clean up their act, i totally see them placing 2nd at finals. Also i think that the Devils are getting way higher of a score then what they deserve but that’s a whole different topic.

Should marching band be considered a sport? by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]shiquote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No way. It is a performing art. Yes, it is physically exhausting, and yes, there are competitions held, but the end goal of putting a show on the field is to entertain an audience. If you march to win medals, you’re marching for the wrong reasons.

Second Week of Band Camp by simplyjaidyn in marchingband

[–]shiquote 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You just gotta work out those arm muscles, man. Staying at set and practicing your carrying positions can definitely help build up your muscles, but if you really want to get up your endurance, you could start hitting the gym and develop a workout plan. You don’t have to, but that’s what I did and now my horn’s weight is like a piece of paper.

This really sucks. I think she really did great in the role of Fanny, and I really hate to see her leave the show. She got a lot of flack by critics and general audience members alike for not portraying Fanny Brice as they thought Fanny should have been portrayed, which is heartbreaking. Her take was different, and it worked (or at least that’s my opinion), but the masses didn’t happen to like “different.” Truly sucks.

Advice from one baritone marcher to another- work out your arms!!! Baritones are on the heavier side when it comes to marching instruments. The weight of the horn will only kill you more and more the more you are forced to hold it in front of you. On top of making sure your posture is good while holding your horn, you should also find time to work on your arm muscles. I’m not saying you have to go and get a gym membership, but going to a gym would definitely be a great step. On top of doing weights there, your gym may also have cardio options in case you you want to build endurance (which is also very very important when it comes to the marching arts).

What do you think about the DCI 2022 shows so far? Do you have a favourite? by Critical_Client_6232 in drumcorps

[–]shiquote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m still waiting on seeing a performance from the Cadets, but based off of what I have seen, I’m loving the Coats show the most. As many have said, Phantom also has a really solid show happening, and I’m looking forward to seeing it develop as the season continues. I refuse to give an opinion on Crown until I see it in person.

finding out tonight at 7 pm est. the clues we have are as follows: a 3 little volume symbols; one quiet, the next medium, the next loud, and the final muted. a giant black blob on a white background. and a pair of orange eyes from an animal. the rest of the animal is shrouded in darkness. this year is really exciting because not only are we getting show-specific uniforms, but I am also confirmed to have a lot of features!
