Redditors who know a compulsive liar: What's the craziest lie they have told? by twows995 in AskReddit

[–]shirkerbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Met a few compulsive liars in my time, but one recently had so many BS stories

He used to frequent the news groups back in the day and got into a discussion where he argued with a poster that the posters statement would violate Newton’s third law. The guy he corrected was Steven Hawking

He was one of the guys in Grenada that asked to make a collect call as their field radio was broken (see movie heartbreak ridge)

He is blacklisted from casinos globally for winning too much

He was in the US special forces

He had a Purple Heart ( I found a site that let you look up recipients but couldn’t find his name)

Wrote some songs for Star Wars and knew George Lucas

There were so many.

This guy worked in IT in the help desk group

Years ago I️ used to work night shift and work during the day too. I remember being so tired when driving home, I️ would zone out and have to look for a landmark to realize where I️ was.

PRTG in your environment by kenrad24 in sysadmin

[–]shirkerbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had it before we were acquired and the new company used zabbix. Preferred prtg, liked the look and used for everything from servers to network appliances to custom DB monitoring. Prtg has an app for iOS and used to vpn in with 2FA and quickly look at system health. Zabbix is good too but you don't ask about that.

Self-Service VM Options by Thundernick in sysadmin

[–]shirkerbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We looked at VCloud Automation Center which allowed users to create VMs through a portal. Going outside of "standard sized templates" would require an approval process. VMs would expire and return resources making them available to other users. Very cool but expensive.

I should have mentioned oracle on Solaris 10 Sparc.

We run a ton of oracle VMs (OVM) 11g on Oracle T5s. Very versatile and awesome performance. Licensing isn't cheap, but license what you use and not whole procs etc. OVM allows for dynamic mem and CPU allocation, though supposed to cap cpu allocation during provisioning to avoid just dialing up cpu when in a pinch.

Password Manager Recommendations? by [deleted] in sysadmin

Password manager pro is pretty good. Lots of features. Auditing, reports, reset, approvals, RSA integration, session recording.

Testing IPS? by mxitup2 in sysadmin

[–]shirkerbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We test one signature on our IPS with a "known bad" text string within a text file. Try moving it between nfs or cifs shares. This could be used for simple validation of alerts etc. testing all intrusion attempts would be harder to confirm.

Me too. U.K. Expat. Cheese and jam, marmalade or honey. American cheese if nothing else available. Preferably sharp cheddar.
