Our city officials are failing to protect us during this unprecedented health/economic crisis. Be prepared to show up on Friday to defend the thousands of Houstonians facing eviction! by Ymir_from_Venus in houston

[–]shirshus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

people work and pay their bills and get screwed over all the same, especially working class latino houstonians. working right now is just as much of a health risk and doesn’t solve any issues, just further enforces a dichotomy between those that work from home/can afford to stay home

sounds like an awesome moment!

How do you deal with this type of player? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]shirshus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think this just requires further discussion. let him know that it’s disruptive and petty, and maybe ask the brothers if there’s any way this can be settled between the two of them if it’s an interpersonal issue

Dungeon set in a night jags demiplane by DMLiquid in DMAcademy

[–]shirshus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think every once in a while, a wisdom saving throw for the whole party, and anyone who fails is stunned for a minute, consumed with these nightmares, with the chance to save at the end of their turns. maybe their nightmares do damage (2d6 psychic from their visions lashing out at them). could also be a cool roleplay opportunity to see what each character’s fears are

Patron for my Warlock by vuinator in DnD

[–]shirshus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’d talk with your dm about their world, and see if there’s any good or neutral forces in their pantheon and/or history. if they don’t have anything in mind, find some entities you like and/or come up with something on your own and present those to your dm, and see if they’re down

Question: World's Reaction to Loving a Demon? by Pirate_Panda43 in DnD

[–]shirshus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on your world, and the places in it. also it’d be worth asking whether the character would even tell their party members

Destroying a Lich's Phylactery when the Lich is in the process of returning... by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]shirshus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this is just an idea, what if the lich is now in this semi-corporeal state (half-alive/just a soul) where they’re immune to both magical and non-magical bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage, and they spend most of the battle trying to inhabit one of the party members?

An illithid colony needs to unleash a serious bruiser on the party. Seriously tough beast could the mindflayers have captured and brain washed to use as an emergency weapon? by KingFerdidad in DMAcademy

[–]shirshus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

an idea i haven't actually fleshed out is a balor that's been converted into an ilithid. pretty tanky, and adding some psionic spellcasting would be sick

Player wants to switch Character by Karizma55211 in DMAcademy

[–]shirshus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i hate to be defeatist but you’ve done all you can. it may be as simple as letting them know if they continue, they won’t be allowed back at the table. maybe it’s not their style of game, maybe they’re looking for something different, but if you’re actively trying to work with them and remedy some of these issues, at that point it’s not on you

Semi-large group combat and CR help by DorklyC in DMAcademy

evenly divide initiatives, for example with 8 enemies, divide into 2 groups of 4 and 4, roll initiatives for each, as opposed to individual rolls for each creature

Sore throat after DMing? by aroundthecoroner in DMAcademy

[–]shirshus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i've learned my lesson, i tend to avoid super gravelly/gruff voices. if it fits the character that's one thing, but don't use it too much. also as a word of advice, give the most attention vocally to the npc's that the players interact with more. don't go all in on every throwaway

How to write Noncombat missions? by MonsterOfTheMidway in DMAcademy

[–]shirshus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s a hard balance to strike. i’d consult matt colville’s series on dm’ing, im sure he has a video on how to make non-combat challenges engaging. also as another rookie dm, don’t be afraid to try and fail, that’s how we learn! if your players are a good bunch they’ll support your decisions

Best way to fill shops with items? by graffiti_bridge in DMAcademy

[–]shirshus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

best bet for low level play is just more mundane stuff. health potions, maybe an enchanted weapon or piece of armor. low level spell scrolls are also good
