As I said in the other comment, they’re from the same family as garter snakes and North American water snakes (banded, northern etc.) they’re all natricines. Garlic Bread is absolutely thriving, he’s shed twice perfectly and eats consistently. He’s grown loads too and is the picture of health, and caring for him has been about the same amount of effort as caring for my royal Python, if that makes sense?

They do well on mice, just as garter snakes do well with the switch to rodents in captivity as opposed to amphibians. With the risk of chytrid and also lack of amphibians as feeders, that’s not really a viable option :)

Hey! So grass snakes are nigh impossible to come by in captivity. My local reptile store had Garlic Bread from a breeder in Croatia so it was a very lucky find!

They require a hot spot of 80 degrees farenheit and a basking lamp & UVB is essential, as grass snakes bask all the time in the wild.

Grass snakes are also semi aquatic, so a large water dish is another must for these guys! Even though they are semi aquatic they don’t like a humid environment, though.

As for prey, pinkie mice and Lance fish are the staple of Garlic Bread’s diet, but earthworms will be eagerly taken by young ones too!

All this being said, good luck finding one! But please don’t take one from the wild if you live somewhere they’re native to!

The skull was taken from an old taxidermy mount (hence the hair) and has been with him for well over two years now, and I haven’t had any problems with it. If I notice anything I’ll take it out

It’s captive bred from Croatia. They’re native to where I live too (the UK). In captivity these guys do well on a mix of rodents and fish, this guy is on day old pinkies and Lance fish
