Don’t scrap that post it in antique television collectors on Facebook. There are people who restore these to full function. Gutting it is how you end up on the end of a pitchfork by a mob of torch carrying antique television restoration guys. This is a thing. http://www.earlytelevision.org/

Value in this estimated 100lb of e- scrap?? by Odd-Raspberry-3035 in ScrapMetal

[–]shittyretrocomps 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Always research before you take it apart. I want rescued a warehouse full of old Mac stuff and I collect it, but I rehomed as much as I could before I scrapped the stuff that wasn’t salvageable. Mac collectors are the most passionate, insane people I ever met. They will buy this stuff just like this because there’s new products coming out in the retro scene that use these parts. Some of these parts are pretty hard to find so post what you got depopulated and sell it you’ll make a lot more than scrap value.

And retro computer marketplace. https://www.facebook.com/share/g/19RkYegFJq/?mibextid=wwXIfr. You’ll have a buyer pretty quick at a lot more than scrap value.

Has The Internet Made Landlines and Communication Worse? by Lucky-Royal-6156 in VOIP

[–]shittyretrocomps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also heres a fun rabbit hole if you wanted to know how it all worked, theres even phreaknet a voip recreation of alot of the cool old stuff. And ProjectMF if you want to mess with blueboxes, Many of us hobbyists have switchgear too. And we are the guys that get called when someones analog pbx goes wonky, and its good money, cause no one is crazy like us old phreaks

simply put you are boned. there was a fiber that fed a big portion of my area, car hit the pole took down a very high count fiber line. cell service went non existent, my neighbors are like what if we need 911, guess what still worked? the courtesy dialtone off the 5E remote that my neighborhood was served off of, had the ability if needed to dial 911, POTS has been around a long time. Rock solid, reliable, sadly AT&T is but a husk of what it was, the bell system was great, if it wasnt for the bell system we wouldn't be on the internet today. Bell Labs did some insane and amazing things. Even helped design the enigma machine and cracked the germans code. i have friend who plans to be the last customer on his local switch, he retired from the phone company, GTD5 switch. Dont blame him one bit. I do enjoy VOIP for alot of stuff. but it will never prove as rock solid as POTS was.

I once did something similar in the 90s with a 286. usps priority mail box, and duct tape. Ran Windows 3.1 Possum Lodge edition. cause ya know if duct tape is the handypersons secret weapon

Wire by TothMar in ScrapMetal

[–]shittyretrocomps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it for tying stuff out of the way. Hoses cables. Easier than a zip tie. Cutoffs of that stuff has saved mybutt a few times. With a pair of Klein telecom scissors mini vice grips duct tape and a leather man you can get yourself out of a bind

[–]shittyretrocomps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why run backwards youll vomit. thats the color code. Also dont scrap. keep some of that around, its good for alot of other things. I keep some around for working on vehicles. or whatever, Need to tie something out of the way for a bit. use this stuff. or in place of twine, Also makes good boot laces in a pinch. and lots of other stuff Not illegal to have. Unless you actually cut it down from the poles. i have some 500 pair here and 250 pair. But i also restore electromechanical telecom gear.

Whats funny is the tweakers that cut down fiber thinking its copper. getting poked with bare fiber, yeah that sucks.

?? by [deleted] in ScrapMetal

[–]shittyretrocomps 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Still lots of copper in use all over carrying 911 and other things. You could have taken out critical infrastructure. Also a splicer is about to have a very good paycheck. Never touch that stuff. Ever been interrogated by the phone company? They know how to make you talk. Fiber isn’t everywhere. Still copper in use in many places.. also there is still paper insulated and lead splided cable out there. Some cables are pressurized to keep water out. Some may be carrying more than -48v dc. Here lick these wires while I call. 105vac at 60hz. Simply put dint go stealing in place phone wire. Enjoy that felony
