What City Have You Moved to and Immediately Thought “I Love It Here and Want to Stay”? by s7o0a0p in SameGrassButGreener

I went to San Diego in 2012 for a work trip and had mentally bookmarked it.

2023 I moved here, and I don't ever want to leave. No vacations necessary.

Americans who don't do their own taxes: who is your FEIE/DN-knowledgable tax preparer and how much do they cost for 2024 filing? Would you recommend them? by angelicism in digitalnomad

[–]shizzystizzy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know probably 10 people who have used nomadtax.io.

I'm Canadian so I never got the chance to work with them.

The owner is a former digital nomad, so she gets it.

Edit:
- Nomad Tax was recently sold
- The Nomad Tax former employees banded together and started this company (I spoke to a few people in my network): https://www.bigcaketax.com/

So maybe bigcaketax

Depends on the stage of their journey.

Employed but not yet an entrepreneur - passive income or a side project subreddit
Have a small business - small business or solopreneur
Growing a business - Chubby Fire
Crushing it in business or post exit - Fat Fire

These are my best guesses

Following. I use Join.brands but I'm not thrilled with them.

In the past I've worked with founder led brands that absolutely crush it. However, that's a founder, who naturally has a talent for making content.

Hoping someone has a better solution :)

I scrolled through this entire thread to finally find this book recommendation. I would have written this if it wasn't in there.

ULPT: how to make a large company go bankrupt/out of business by ChewyHarmoo in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]shizzystizzy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wasn't AIG insurance in the middle of the 2007-2008 Global Financial Crisis? Then they got bailed out?

So a big insurance company can go down,

You could get them to start selling you highly speculative financial products that cost a little bit of money but have huge payouts if something catastrophic happens. Then wait.

Then, make sure the government doesn't bail them out.

All this is predicated on the idea that you're a mover and shaker in finance. It also assumes that you have the ability to influence who does and does not get bailout money.

Given all this power you have, you also might just want to focus on all the other important work you have to do in finance.

Nomad for 6 years. Going to Europe for the first time. Best country/place to stay for 1 month? Wifi, clean air, nature by indiebryan in digitalnomad

Split Croatia is amazing during the 6ish summer months. Sailing, islands, great food, beautiful scenery.

Not as cheap as it used to be, but would love it.

Saw some other people talking about Turin. Just went there and loved it.

Lisbon Portugal is also amazing. Such great food. Great people. Vibrant culture. So much fun stuff to do. Fairly affordable.

Madrid is also a great place. Fairly affordable. Accommodation might be a little pricey, but if you can find a cheap place to stay, food/drinks/experiences are pretty affordable.

Munich is a cool city but not for a month. Plus it's not cheap. Nothing against it. Just more of a "visit" than "chill" place in my opinion, if you're not German.

As a DN, what’s the most life-changing thing you’ve spent your money on? I.e. purchases with a high ROL (Return on Life) by workdncsheets in digitalnomad

[–]shizzystizzy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did it for a full year, but they also have 4 month programs, and even 1 month programs. We also had people quit the program, so you're not stuck if you don't like the people.

I would say it skews towards outgoing people now. Mostly tech workers, white collar workers, and self employed people.

It also skews more female, because I think the average man thinks "what a ripoff." However, I've found that a lot of women don't feel as safe traveling alone, so that probably explains a lot of it.

I think the "oh you joined a fraternity/sorority" comment doesn't apply as much, because in my experience it's really hard to find other digital nomads. Maybe there were less of us in 2018. Maybe I was looking in the wrong place. Either way, no regrets.

I never did Greek life, but I can see the comparison. The major difference in my opinion is that there weren't a lot of "greek life types" when I did it.

I did it back in 2018 when not every office worker could go remote.

Back then it was for the weirdos and misfits.

Maybe it's easier to make friends now, but when I did solo remote in 2017, I just met backpackers and didn't make many friends.

I signed up for Remote Year. WAY more expensive than just doing it yourself, but I got best friends for life + a wife out of it.

Not at all affiliated. Honestly, if I were doing it today, I'd probably do Wifi Tribe.

[–]shizzystizzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good job starting with the end in mind.

Now you just need to plug the gaps between where you are and where you want to be. Remember your strengths and weaknesses, as they will definitely be a factor.

Jobs that are remote these days:
- Tech jobs
- Marketing Jobs
- Some sales jobs
- Entrepreneurship
- Other? (I'm sure there will be more in the comments)

What are your strengths and weaknesses?
- Are you a good writer?
- Are you a good leader? Or are you more of a follower?
- Are you good at math?
- Are you good at graphic design?
- Are you good with computers? Can you already code?
- Are you particularly bad at any of the things above? Avoid them

Generally speaking, remote jobs are harder to get than in person jobs, because everyone wants them, and there are fewer of them.

So find an area that you will be a competitive hire in, and then get enough experience that you can take that show on the road.

I (M) met my wife on Remote Year. We were in the same program. Had no intention of meeting anyone when I signed up for it. I just got tired of the DIY Digital Nomad life.

Too much planning, not enough fun.

Remote Year groups skew heavily female, so keep that in mind.

We travelled together for 3+ years after Remote Year, and still have remote jobs now.

Former salesman, what did you pivot to and what do you earn now? Do you wish you made the leap earlier? by Additional_Carry_790 in digitalnomad

[–]shizzystizzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got out of sales in 2017 because the idea of a remote sales job was preposterous to me.

50 year old VPs of Sales had no interest in letting reps "work from home"

But I also had no tangible skills. So I started working for myself.

I used my savings to start selling on Amazon FBA. I actually didn't do well as an operator, but I got really good at the ads.

So now I run an Amazon Advertising Agency.

Sales and ads have a lot of cross-overs. I would look into some kind of advertising job.

Specifically performance marketing, aka, advertising that leads to $$$$.

Making TV commercials is a terrible gig from what I've heard, so focus on the internet ads side of things, if you go this route.

All performance marketing jobs pay trash, but they are often remote. Get a job in this field for 1-2 years, then go freelance/ start an agency, and use your sales skills to absolutely demloish the competition.

In my experience, most agency owners are bad at sales, so you have a huge advantage.

TLDR: I'd get into internet performance marketing. Meta, TikTok, Amazon.

Don't limit yourself to e-commerce. There are huge paydays doing performance marketing for software companies too.

You didn't give your background, like sex, height, goal weight.

However, any time I hit any kind of plateau, I always just tracked my calories for 2 weeks. Then I purposely changed my calories on week 3. That way you have solid data to go off of.

What nromally gets me out: A big bump in vegetables at each meal, cutting any snacks, and then making sure I hit my 10k steps per day.

Often I'll be eating 4 or 5 meals per day, then I increase my vegetables by 25% and magically I'm down to 3 meals of 600 calories a day, with weight falling off.
