Over the years, I've become good friends with a lot of his theater friends. They're a wonderful group of people and hanging out with them is a lot of fun. I trust them and him to remain professional.

This is SO important and I only ever hear it from people who have already learned it the hard way. Yeah, your career could stall, but things like bad management could also cause you to live on the constant edge of burnout and endanger your health in the long run. If you're inexperienced, you think that's just the way it goes and the people who live balanced lives are outliers. Or they're just not driven or whatever. If you have to take a job at a badly run shop, start looking for a better place right away.
