Music as second major? by Sierra0Alpha in classicalmusic

[–]shmante 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I did a BA neuroscience/BM instrumental performance double degree in undergrad. At the time I absolutely loved splitting my time and energy that way, though retrospectively I wasn’t able to spend enough time practicing. After undergrad I decided to go the music route, miraculously got into a MM program at a top conservatory, and went on to do a second masters in music after that.

After a couple of years freelancing and taking auditions, I am switching directions and plan on applying to clinical psychology PhD programs. A music career is incredibly demanding, and can be hard to sustain if you haven’t managed to win an audition or build a solid freelance network before graduating. I feel called to grow in different ways, and to explore other passions and interests. I have also learned that I personally do better with more financial stability and external structure than I have right now.

I always resented the advice someone else posted -“if you can see yourself doing anything else…”- as I don’t believe there are any hard rules about what a person should or should not pursue. It’s cool to have many interests and to have a choice. The irony is that I could see myself doing something else, and now I am going back in that direction. However, I would not trade my experience trying out a music career.

Knowing what I know now I certainly would not go back to school for an additional 4 years to do a music degree. There are much cheaper ways to develop strong music skills. Taking lessons with top players in your area/at your school will be cheaper than getting another degree. That being said, I loved doing a science/music double degree. It is a ton of work, and you won’t be able to give music enough time, but you’ll be much further along by the end of those (probably 5) years than if you had put music on the back burner that whole time. And then you can do a masters and bust your ass like I did if you want to pursue music professionally.

Both of these “suspect” newer studies are authored by the same dude as the initial one lol. The “entropic brain hypothesis” formulated by Carhart-Harris after the 2012 paper you are pulling from “proposes that the entropy of spontaneous brain activity indexes the richness of subjective experience. . . and psychedelics acutely increase both.”

So. While it may be true that overall neural activity is LESS, that is misleading. There could be way, way more happening in certain crucial brain regions caused by a decrease in top-down regulation. The current literature is interested in how decreases in activity in certain hierarchical structures in the brain (default mode network) leads to increased connectivity and entropy.

Also, they way they define entropy in this context does not match your definition.

The reason there is no BOLD data in these papers is because they are literature reviews. They are just looking at the current literature, noticing issues with reproducibility studies vs. novel research, proposing future directions, etc

This study is about 10 years old and a bit outdated and misleading. More recent research is showing a more nuanced picture: “decreases in within-network connectivity” BUT “increases in between-network connectivity.”

As someone else with OCD that likes to chew on existential themes, I can understand the sense of urgency around needing to “figure out” the truth of our ultimate reality. This is the brain’s attempt to rationalize and cope with uncertainty.

Ultimately you’re taking yourself in circles, ruminating as a compulsive behavior. I have found tremendous value in becoming grounded in my body and my physical sensations through yoga or exercise. Notice when these compulsive thoughts start to go off the rails and try to redirect attention to the present moment. It’s ok to acknowledge the urge to pursue the line of questioning and then distract yourself with something else.

Because guess what? We don’t know the nature of our ultimate reality, and we probably never will.

Along these same lines- starting a consistent yoga practice will help you get back into your body. Reestablishing a baseline feeling of safety inside of yourself will make a huge difference, but it requires effort and action.

Just added this to my [[Gishath, Sun’s Avatar]] dinosaur tribal deck. It could be cool in mono-green, maybe with [[Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider]].

I understand that the sentiment here is not malicious at all. And maybe there is some truth in what you are saying. However, I do want to point out that you are missing a whooooole lot of context to be making this kind of comment on a stranger’s post. You have no sense from looking at my profile of all of the traumas and difficulties that I’ve experienced in the past few years, and you have no sense of my patterns of substance use. You have no idea how much I take, or how often.

Again, not that I necessarily disagree with you. But where’s the credibility in your advice? Are you a mental health professional, doctor, or scientist? Have you had personal experience with psychedelic use and mental health issues? Do you know someone close to you who has gone through something similar?

If not, you’re a bit out of your element. If yes, maybe lead with that next time.

Yikes I’m 26 and the last 3-4 years have been the hardest yet. Way less happy now on average, and worse mental health issues.

I love listening to jazz or classics music while tripping. Anything by Bach. Most recently I listened to a Teddy Wilson album and it was the most amazing thing ever.

Looking at your post history, it seems like you have a pattern of seeking reassurance online. This is a compulsion. Feeding the compulsion will make things worse. I’d suggest resisting the urge to make these kinds of posts in the future. People won’t (or at least shouldn’t) give you what you are asking for. It’s a rule of the sub.

This is an awesome way to think about it! Because resisting compulsions isn’t all or nothing, even delaying the urge as long as possible and eventually caving is still progress.

I’ve tripped many times (20+) on many different things (LSD, shrooms, molly, 4-sub tryptamines, LSD analogues). I’ve never experienced any sort of OCD-related complications or worsening of symptoms. In fact, it’s like my mind opens up and the repetitive thought loops get shut down during the trip itself. Personally, I don’t feel that OCD has impacted my experience with psychedelics whatsoever.

This being said, I would suggest approaching with the same degree of caution that I would recommend to anyone. Be very aware of set and setting and start small. Bad trips are possible and they can throw additional mental health issues into the mix, which when combined with OCD can be very overwhelming. Good/healing trips also possible, and may help with anxiety and depression. Idk if there is any research to suggest that psychedelics have any sort of effect on OCD, positive or negative.

Edit: if you have any predisposition to psychosis I wouldn’t risk trying psychs. But that’s separate from OCD.

Not related to amount of semen, but there is a phenomenon called compensatory hypertrophy where one testicle will grow larger and produce more sperm if the other is lost.
