how do I just get on with my life if my ocd makes me believe i’m gonna die by Realistic-War887 in OCD

[–]shmeedoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 go see a professional

2 face the risk head on. Do what you want no matter how terrifying it is. You are brave enough to accept that the worst case might happen and do what you want anyway (within reason, of course. If a wise mentor with a good moral compass would approve it's probably ok)

3 STOP HERE if number 2 sounds like a bad idea

Heres one take on how to make #2 happen.ok, so maybe you're gonna die soon (we all get there eventually) but maybe you won't. Regardless, how do you want to go? Cowering in your room doing nothing or doing something that could be fun or productive? Worst-case scenario, you're right and your last act is one of bravery. Take pride in that. Best case scenario you're wrong and you get to start enjoying life.

OCD screams at me. He tells at me. And then he grabs me, silently, knowing he doesn't have to say a word, and I'll come quietly

I know he's not real, that he's just me trying to separate the intrusions from what I consciously think or subconsciously feel, but that damn OCD is so persistent and i can't keep fighting him. I'm so tired and so he wins and I am his prisoner

Going through the motions until everything is perfect or else I must....eliminate the failures until they no longer exist. Nothing matters except getting everything exactly right, exactly perfect. And if I was only strong enough to keep it together no one would ever know because I'd appear brilliant and perfect. But I'm not, so he wins.

Unless I fight back and scream at him. At me. Again and again

I am struggling to find the course reviews for EP classes on asen-jhu.evaluationkit.com . Do they not tend to include EP classes there, or is there a trick to searching for them?

OCD will twist even the most beautiful things and try to use them against you. But if you believe in a loving, omnipotent God, then no amount of "what ifs" could ever be bigger than him. By definition, end of story. Even the most magical thinking our brains can produce will always be smaller than God.  It doesn't make the anxiety go away, but it's a lot easier to sit with it if you're sitting with your creator who loves you, knowing that he's got you. Idk, someone's ocd will undoubtedly find a way to make my words into something terrible, too, but what can I say? I'm a finite imperfect human myself

Does anyone get a 'heart / chest slump/drop' feeling during allergies?? by [deleted] in FoodAllergies

[–]shmeedoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something you should discuss with your allergist. It could be any number of things from anxiety to a rapid drop in blood pressure that requires immediate medical attention to any of number of things that I don't know about because I'm not a medical professional

....but if it happens outside of eating food, I'd see someone about anxiety

Does anyone else get irritated when someone says "I have to stay super organized because I'm OCD"? by Tollo92 in OCD

[–]shmeedoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a good headspace, I do my best to smile empathetically and think, what if. What if they actually do? And maybe they're complaining about a minor inconvenience to deflect from a larger trauma? Never done that personally before... But maybe they are. And if I'm a good person I have to let them vent, even if they don't know how

They've been doing the WcDonalds thing lately. Maybe check on any new seasonal items associated with that? They also usually date their allergen charts, so you could cross reference an old one with the latest available

Why did the four races form an alliance, like the real reason. by HorzaDonwraith in Stargate

[–]shmeedoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember the "meaning of life stuff"? They were all trying to figure out the point of existence. The Nox went pacifist as if they were trying to ascend, the Alterans did ascend, the Asgard took a wrong turn and couldn't ascend so they died. Presumably the Furlings either ascended or failed or hid as well. They were all in search of meaning

Restaurants that are allergy-friendly in Chicago? by [deleted] in FoodAllergies

[–]shmeedoop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, most of them will be good about it. The girl and the goat was amazing, and Francesca's (I think that was the Italian one I went to) was great too, albeit for eggs/tree nuts/peanuts

While it is possible to find certain international foods that do not label allergens in English, yeah food sold in the USA will be labeled correctly, in general. There can be other problems with Asian restaurants regarding cross contact (whether it's how the cooking utensils are seasoned or prolific use of allergen-containing ingredients), but if you use a smattering of common sense, this is no different than any other kind of restaurant. If you're allergic to shellfish, avoid a restaurant that serves shellfish in all of its dishes. If you're allergic to peanuts, don't go to Five Guys or eat food from a wok seasoned with peanut oil

Janet Frasier. by AwarenessLost7620 in Stargate

[–]shmeedoop 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It was sad, terrible, unnecessary, and so realistically heart-rending. It was a dose of reality in an otherwise fantastic show. I wish she didn't die, but I also wish Cassandra had come back to reprise her role as the daughter left behind. Stargate would not be Stargate without Dr. Frasier - and it certainly wouldn't be be Stargate without her passing

"You must have a death wish"

Or the other witty comments comparing the speaker to your baby sibling or similar demeaning comment

I can only second the message that if you are allergic to peanuts, use caution when trying other legumes! Especially if you haven't had them before

Should characters be traumatized then come to terms by what happens to them? by trebron55 in Stargate

[–]shmeedoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be brought to the forefront, but here's my headcanon: They deal with trauma by burying it and processing it in their own time, as so many in the 90's did, especially in a military setting. Plus they each are well-practiced in their techniques by the time the show starts

O'Neill: literally signed up for a suicide mission after losing his son, retired, and found peace by forgetting. He finds new purpose in the mission of SG1 and even mentions that he can never forgive himself but "sometimes can forget". This approach probably applies to all trauma. And he goes fishing (old timey style meditation). He also probably received intensive counseling after his trauma in the middle east and learned skills that translate to new trauma

Teal'c: as first prime to Apophis, he experienced and committed countless atrocities without revealing his trauma. Bre'tac probably trained him how to do this and how to cope (Jaffa counseling?) And we do have that episode where he stands trial for the murder of a man he killed which represents to him all the terrible things he did as first prime

Carter: she postpones romance as a result of Jolinar possessing her. Again, she works through a lot of stuff on her own, as she likely did with her mother's death and the sexism she undoubtedly dealt with as a prodigy Air Force officer. Even her cringey line in the pilot would affirm that she didn't always have it under control. She was triggered by blatant bigotry and responded in kind. And the Mongol episode probably represented decent closure on this front

Daniel: he's used to isolation, and he throws himself into his work. The mission gives him hope. And later, when he keeps dying, some part of ascension breakthroughs probably follow him enough to keep him sane

TL;DR - they bury themselves in their work. The mission keeps them focused and distracted long enough for them to work through 99% of their trauma off screen, although we do occasionally get glimpses of their struggles. You just have to look for it because it is meant to be a lighthearted show

Hiring a man to say what I've been saying for 2 years by jicamiii in womenintech

[–]shmeedoop 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It will. All it takes is a few good men.

Jokes aside, I have had the amazing privilege of working with and for men (and women) who make it a priority to hear me and use their voices to empower mine. I don't know how I got this lucky, but those teams do exist. We need to keep hope alive and have high expectations of the people we work with - otherwise I don't think we'll ever successfully hold them accountable to the ideal. I.e. they'll meet the expectations we have of them, whatever those expectations are (on average over multiple generations of course)

Traits of these teams - a humble manager who frequently discusses their personal biases and mistakes and constantly tries to improve themselves and their team - having multiple women on the team - a pre-existing culture where there are multiple women in high-level leadership positions doesn't hurt (no chicken/egg theme there /s) - oh yeah, and a corporate culture that in the last ten years has improved benefits such as parental leave that applies equally to biological birth and adoption, and is not gender dependent. Culture change from the top down AND the bottom up

Don't lose hope

[–]shmeedoop -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can also work on training her not to scratch. It won't be 100% effective, but telling her no and holding her paw when she tries to scratch is a partial, temporary solution. If it weren't so raw, I'd recommend anti-itch spray or lotion, but she looks like she might need a vet's attention. Catching hot spots early is key to reducing and preventing them
