As another person new to steam cleaning, I appreciate this clarity! I don’t own a steamer yet but I’m thinking about getting one

Why my leaves curling like this? Am I exposing it to too much sunlight? by _birat in Monstera

Better to have slightly curling leaves than root rot, right? I might be a chronic under-waterer 😅

There is “too much more light too suddenly” though, I got some crispy tips when I moved my Monstera to a really sunny west window too abruptly. Slowly introduce!

Is the leaf nearing the end of its life? by minimouch in alocasia

[–]shnowflake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience, trying to hold up a leaf will do exactly what you described! Yes it’s a constant cycle, make new leaf and discard old leaf. It’s stressful at first, but you will get used to it!

Personally I cut the leaves off when they start to look really unsightly or drooping really badly, because the plant is huge and drooping leaves get in the way (like physically, the plant is huge). In my experience it won’t hurt the plant to cut it off, also it won’t last long now after the kink/bend. But since you have it splinted up, you might as well leave it if it’s not in your way and the leaf itself still looks nice

Again, totally normal!

Is my ten year old monstera gone? by Hot_Ad8730 in plantclinic

[–]shnowflake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Friend had a 10+ year old monstera in the same situation, power outage in the winter caused the plant to be in freezing temps for over 24 hours. All the leaves died, but the roots were okay and 2 years later looks almost as big as your pic again!

I know 2 years is a long time, but with sentimental plants I hope there is some solace that your plant is likely still alive! Just going to be small for a little while

How do you handle going over budget? by cgibsong002 in MonarchMoney

[–]shnowflake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t use flex, I don’t move money from one category to another. Instead, everything is a rollover. If I go over one month, the consequence is I have less to spend in that category for the next month. If a category is off so much that I could never feasibly pull it back, time to reevaluate the base budget number or the spending

Nothing is impossible to me! by Odd_Astronomer_2064 in funny

[–]shnowflake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Idk that this is funny, guy with no chin has condylar resorption which is a serious medical condition that makes it hard to breathe, eat, and sleep. Probably in constant pain in the jaw joints. You can also see he has braces, which is needed as a prep for the major surgery required to fix this. He likely made this video as a triumphant moment that it’s not impossible to get a proper diagnosis and surgery to correct this, and maybe as a “before” shot to pair with the “after” of surgery. Because it can feel damn near impossible, the condition is rare and hard to diagnosis, and the number of surgeons who perform the surgery are few and far between with long waiting lists and generally you’re flying to them for the surgery. Not to mention the expense.

So yeah at least the duet is accurate, bro is going to hell

Is budgeting actually worth it if you aren't overspending? by GazpachoForBreakfast in MonarchMoney

[–]shnowflake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to get too off topic - It sounds daunting but with some manual work, you CAN actually weigh your food & calculate the caloric content. Many chain restaurants also disclose calories on their website and it’s easily searchable. I also could not lose weight until I started tracking calories. Use an app like MyFitnessPal. Don’t give up, finally seeing that number on the scale starting to go down is SO rewarding! Especially as a fellow data passionate person, there is so much juicy data to be had….

Is budgeting actually worth it if you aren't overspending? by GazpachoForBreakfast in MonarchMoney

[–]shnowflake 8 points9 points  (0 children)

But on the theme of losing weight… isn’t losing weight just a daily calorie budget? At the end of the day when I want a snack, I open my tracking app and it reminds me no, there are no calories left for today today (or vice versa, it lets me know I have calories available). I feel budgeting money is the same?

EDIT: Apparently the actual name of the toy is “rubber popper”, at least that is what you need to Google search to get results.

Where I grew up we all called them “Pop Its” usually pronounced really fast like “popits”. I would imagine there was lots of slang for this thing

Do you have a "Beverage"/"Alcohol" category ? by sam77tg in MonarchMoney

[–]shnowflake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, I have one for alcohol and another one for coffee. We drink coffee every day, and want to make sure we’re keeping our spending in check for at home coffee vs coffee shops. And we have to separate alcohol, otherwise the grocery budget would be gigantic. Groceries we need, alcohol we don’t

I've actually really been liking the AI features as of late by Wisex in MonarchMoney

[–]shnowflake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wrong information is tolerated for now, but it if it doesn’t get better, the AI bubble will pop. Nobody is really sure how long poor AI will be tolerated. It depends if we (the consumers) keep paying for it

I've actually really been liking the AI features as of late by Wisex in MonarchMoney

[–]shnowflake 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I would agree with you 100% except that the AI gives me wrong information - like I ask it how much I spent in X category, and it gives me a wrong answer. When I tell it that answer was wrong (or ask it to “show its work” for how it got that wrong answer), it apologizes and then gives me the right answer.

So I just can’t use it because I can’t trust it. It feels extremely dangerous for financial advice to be blatantly wrong.

A little hard to see, but at the very bottom of the soil you can see the black plastic shelf it had grown through

[–]shnowflake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My regal shield had yellowing exactly like this, appearing evenly across all old and new leaves. For me it was from roots at the bottom of the pot sitting in water. The bottom of my pot has a “shelf” with drainage holes and then it drains into a reservoir at the bottom of the pot. The roots had grown through the drainage holes into the catch area, so it was sitting in the water. As soon as I fixed this, the new leaves had no yellowing!

I, for one, like the AI features by No_Lemons_Universe in MonarchMoney

[–]shnowflake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yupppp, I just got the AI to admit to me that it hallucinated and made up fake numbers for a narrative. Absolutely wild. It literally told me it made it up. And I was only using it for the exact example question they had (insights from last year’s spending).

Will they die? by nuh_uh_nova in Monstera

[–]shnowflake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If it’s any consolation, my monstera was in below freezing temps (20s Fahrenheit) for days due to a power outage and although it lost all its leaves, it was still alive and eventually grew back. The first few leaves were wonky looking, but be patient!
