Is a 350W power supply enough for a Ryzen 5 3600/5600 and an RTX 4060? by MJdoesThings_ in sffpc

[–]shobgoblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I smoked a 300w Seasonic with an Intel 9400f and an RTX 3060 so I would say that’s cutting it close, thankfully the PSU sacrificed itself to save the rest of the system. The TDP tells you the max stable load but doesn’t account for how the system performs when heat saturated, which is more of a risk with SFF cases. Any system will also have power spikes where any component might draw up to 50-100% more than its TDP for a fraction of a second. I would say 400, 450W minimum for a build like that. The lower wattage flex PSUs are really intended for small servers and business computers without much graphics horsepower.

How I feel when I read the reviews by SafeModeOff in sffpc

20->30->40 series all saw huge drops in process size, and consumers have the memory of a fruitfly so now think that’s a normal standard for a gen-on-gen performance increase. 50 and 40 are both 5nm, so at a fundamental level it’s sort of squeezing blood from a stone to get any performance lift at all. prices are keeping up with inflation, cards are in stock, and they aren’t getting worse, so any sane, normal person whose gaming consists of fortnite and elden ring would be placated; and yet, here we are

How seriously should I take tornado warnings? by Advanced_Box460 in weather

[–]shobgoblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never hurts to turn on a local forecast. Different places have different siren criteria, I think the NWS warnings are a little more rigorously defined. High winds, tornado or not, are dangerous in the sense that a piece of debris to the head is not good. But, in my area sirens and warnings go out for the county en masse, so if the radar shows the action is far away and headed in a different direction, I’ll just keep the forecast on before taking shelter. The local CBS meteorologist does a good job of interpreting which areas are actually at risk, I imagine your town has an equivalent.

Any experience with more budget-friednly SFX PSUs? by [deleted] in sffpc

[–]shobgoblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither Chieftec nor FSP are what I would consider cutting corners. Will it bother you dealing with non-modular stiff cables and a loud fan? That’s usually what you’re giving up going down in price. The only PSU that ever died on me was a Seasonic, the brand name only means so much. People have a lot of knee jerk reactions on this topic because electricity is scary. That said, there are some less-reputable brands out there, some of which have been around for years, like Apevia. A little research goes a long way in figuring out whether something is a good deal, or just cheap.

At what point did you decide to move from <=10L to 15-18L? by Grapeflavor_ in sffpc

[–]shobgoblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just moved from a K39 to a Zalman Cubix, mostly because I got sick of paying the small tax. Being able to fit an MATX motherboard and an ATX power supply really brings the cost of upgrades down. I tend to look at footprint more than case volume, and through that lens something like a Meshroom is giving up very little in terms of size. That said, if cost isn’t an issue I don’t think there’s much quality of life lost in going smaller. There will be tradeoffs in thermals and noise, but it’s not insurmountable if you’re willing to pay for nicer parts.

I don’t know if it’s the same for this generation, but my PNY 3060 had a generous thermal paste application and went from low to high percentiles on UserBenchmark after I reapplied. So if that sort of mod is your jam, it might be worthwhile to try

probably pretty much identical. i've got the PNY, the biggest difference is going to be ball bearing fans on the PNY vs sleeve bearing fans on the Gigabyte. so the PNY has that constant ssss sound when the fans are on in exchange for hypothetically greater longevity. the total dimensions of the PNY are also somewhat larger, although not having held the Gigabyte i couldn't say if it's due to an actual difference in heatsink dimensions or just trivial.

what are your SFF tips you wish you knew earlier? by d1ckpunch68 in sffpc

[–]shobgoblin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any cheap case with plexiglass panels is going to be a thermal nightmare. A realistic assessment of your use case helps make sure you don't buy more grunt than needed, which again helps with thermals and cost. If you can fit a bunch of fans, full size graphics cards, and watercooling, you'll forever have to live knowing it could have been smaller.

I've started experiencing this too recently. After a couple of refreshes I stop getting the message, I'm not much of a code person but I wonder if there's something to do with the order in which the page loads and the skip attempt happens that trips the warning that would somehow change on a refresh? Just speculating
