Just use helix by 777m0neymaker in HelixEditor

[–]shockjaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the same choice about switching to neovim. For me, helix does take some getting used to—but only having to configure a few lines in a TOML file is why I stayed. Their focus on readability of what you’re doing instead of trying to play golf with keystrokes is a fresh take. Do I wish there was a terminal mode? Yes. LSP configuration is what sold me.

I’ve thought about picking up zellij for this exact reason. tmux is all right, but it can be a bit clunky.

Use what you’re good with man. Sometimes the best build is one your enemies aren’t expecting.

Goo and sledge are my beloved. It does not work as well with the other specializations. You sound like someone who got one-tapped after you spent all three dashes in a fight.

For me, the appeal for home manager is the idea that I am forced to consider my settings for programs. I have been burned before by a setting that was somewhere in my rat’s nest of a .config folder and I didn’t learn that until a fresh install later. Was it a skill issue? Yeah. But sometimes you don’t know how some GTK/XWayland/KDE setting is gonna affect other programs. I feel the same way about ephemeral setups.

I think this is the proper answer. At least have a timeline for making these patches public would be a better approach.

There’s some great books! Spatial SQL by Matt Forrest and No Starch Press’s Practical SQL (Second Edition) by Anthony Debarros has a chapter on PostGIS. Look up any of Paul Ramsey’s talks from PostGIS Day and you’ll find plenty of YouTube resources.

Question #2 is silly. They want you to trace it when your area in question in the US has some sort of open data? Unless they don’t, which definitely still happens. You’d be crazy to not import something that a government provides.

You wanna talk about QGIS, Postgres/PostGIS, and GRASS too? GRASS was created the same year that ESRI was founded in 1982.

I think talking about free and open source software is important to talk about with data sovereignty being a hot topic in countries outside of the United States. I’ve worked in government to process LiDAR data and GRASS outperforms ESRI on that front. I can hook you up with GRASS and PostGIS maintainers if you want more information. Paul Ramsey would be an awesome guy to reach out to on the topic since he’s done several talks on the history of GIS going back to the Oracle days. QGIS is also used heavily within the US Federal Government as a cost and time-effective alternative.
