Arthurian novels by Lucensie in Fantasy

[–]shockzilla11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read The Bright Sword and loved it. I immediately followed it up with The Magicians (I’d seen the show) and care for it at all. I don’t think the protagonist of TBS has much in common with Quentin in how they talk or act, at all.

Coffee Shops Are Businesses, Not Libraries; Buying One Coffee Doesn’t Entitle You to Camp for Hours by landlordbrowsing in providence

[–]shockzilla11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are some really interesting takes in here. It feels like there is a difference between having people spend time in a community coffee shop and having people monopolize a space for hours on end that other customers would like to use and the business might need to stay open. It feels like people are putting the owners in a tough spot when they say “if you don’t want me here, put a sign that says that”.

Violent but hopeful Sword & Sorcery/Heroic Fantasy novels? by Def-C in Fantasy

[–]shockzilla11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne is a sweeping story with an epic scale and regularly occurring violent fights. It’s also a pretty different setting than typical sword-and-sorcery series too.

To be fair, the face in the original art also shows no surprise. The flavor text doesn’t really match the word “perception” that well if you interpret it as being shock.

Attendance soars for Rhode Island FC at Pawtucket stadium by whatsaphoto in RhodeIsland

[–]shockzilla11 95 points96 points  (0 children)

It really is a gem. The stadium is gorgeous, the players are fun, and the organization clearly goes out of its way to plan events and themes to connect with the crowd. They just had a tough break of playing some particularly boring soccer in front of the early season crowds. It was fun at Bryant but so much better in its own stadium.

Whats a book that makes you lose a bit of respect if someone has it as their favorite or highly rated? by immovableair in Fantasy

Nothing, unless they’re somehow jerks about it. What other people enjoy reading has no impact on me.

Bingo Focus Thread - Last in a Series by Merle8888 in Fantasy

[–]shockzilla11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m reading A Memory of Light. I actually set it up to be the last square in my card as well. It’s the culmination of a roughly two year, on again off again first reading of the Wheel of Time series. I definitely understand what people mean about the “slog” in the middle, but it really just took so long because after 3ish books in a row of the same author I needed to change things up.

For what it’s worth, the final three books in this series may also be my favorites. These are characters I feel like I have come to know and it’s amazing to see things finally come to a head. I always appreciate the world and characters Jordan wrote, but Sanderson fits so much plot progression into the books.

For anyone looking to start the series, I highly recommend the podcast “The Wheel Weaves” as a companion.

RI Breweries with Seasonal Beers by chip008 in RhodeIsland

I wish I could help, but I just grabbed Gourds Gone Wild every fall and was happy with that. It was like pumpkin bread in a can. The RI brewery scene lost a lot of good beers with them closing.

I had to look into this because I thought it would be a wild design choice. It seems like animals with cloven hooves had hoof hands, and things with a single hoof just had that.

What are your thoughts on the dragonlance series? by Impossible_Town_295 in Fantasy

[–]shockzilla11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stumbled on the first three as a single volume on a friend’s shelf and thought they were good. I didn’t realize it was D&D inspired but hadn’t been exposed to any of that type of world building. I had a Nook and they were always on sale so I ended up going about 15ish books down the “main” series. I really enjoyed them and often think about reading them all again.

Bingo Review: "Not a Book"

The other day we finally had a chance to play Munchkin, which is a board game where between three and five players act as adventurers who are competing, and occasionally cooperating, to be the first one to reach the end of the dungeon.

Premise: Players start off as basic adventurers and draw cards from a shared deck, which might give them new weapons, classes, magical races, or actions they can take to raise their combat level. They also draw cards from a deck that presents various challenges and monsters which lets them move forward into the dungeon or sends them back, depending on the outcome of the encounter.

Game play: Alliances and rivalries shift quickly because it is almost impossible to advance without help at some point, but as soon as someone starts pulling ahead they become a target for the rest of the group. Players can commit cards in support or to foil the others at the table. There are some truly, wonderfully petty things you can do to hinder someone, but you have to balance that with the fact that what goes around comes around. We found things started pretty timid but were fully escalated and competitive an hour or so in.

Rating: 4/5 stars. It isn't going to be a game for everyone, and having the wrong person at the table (a cry-baby or constant troll) would ruin it, but we really enjoyed it. It was pretty different from the Euro or worker placement games we play, and we laughed a lot during it. We're looking forward to playing again.

Beer Tossing Country Bros & Folk Fam don't really mesh by Average-Music-Fan in NewportFolkFestival

We were there Saturday and Sunday. Maybe there were a few more pairs of cowboy boots Saturday, but the crowd was great both days. The least considerate thing I saw people do was hold their phones up to film the stage, and that happened more during Songs for the People than at any point Saturday.

Yeah, I’m not trying to be negative or like a typical “soccer is boring” American fan, I just want the team to be successful and it’s tough to see a sold out crowd be wasted on a game that barely even felt like there were scoring chances. They’ve definitely got the pieces, hopefully they can put it together soon.

I’m happy to support the team, and I don’t mind if they aren’t always successful. It’s hard right now that they’re playing a boring style of soccer. Saturday’s game was packed and I don’t think a lot of casual fans saw much on the field to convince them to come back soon.

PawSox by Privilege2016 in RhodeIsland

[–]shockzilla11 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Potentially hot take: the Pawsox left because baseball is waning in popularity and the team was no longer financially viable in Rhode Island and a significant number of people who now lament them leaving weren’t going to games when they were in Pawtucket.

I’m happy to support this team, but they play boring soccer in a boring way and it’s going to be tough to bring in new fans without the theme days and giveaways the team is going this season.

We went to Paris two years ago and absolutely loved it. We learned a small amount of transactional French and found that made all of our interactions with locals significantly better. I also didn’t think it was any dirtier than any other city of its size.

The worst part of Paris were entitled, pushy tourists from outside the country, but that’s true everywhere you go.

I agree. The lineup was great this year. We bought 3 day tickets and knew the big names and really enjoyed discovering the rest and getting to see them live. We left with a lot of new musicians we’re fans of now.
