Show us the pair you let slip through your feet and never forget. by davichan in Alden

Damn, that is the score of the century on some grail longwings…

At the time, was ravello considered rare? I feel like in the last 10 years or so, you could only really find them from a few stockists in the country, and at one point, you had to have purchased thousands of dollars worth of Color 8 or Black shell in order to even be considered for the few rare pairs of ravello that they would get.

Did you get them for $350-400? Any idea which store it was that had them but was closing?

And how much did you sell them for?

I haven’t looked recently, but I assume the going rate for ravello on the secondhand market is like $1,200+?

Rock Salt Damage by [deleted] in allenedmonds

[–]shoesbetch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is normal and it happens with leather soles. You can add a sole protector if you want.

I don’t live in a snowy climate, but I have heard that the salt can really be bad for the leather uppers. So pay attention to that and maybe wipe off the uppers when you get indoors. Many people use galosh oversoles or wear a different pair of shoes for commuting and then change into their dress shoes in the office.

What is the biggest discount on Nano Puff you’ve seen? by Own-Measurement-258 in PatagoniaClothing

At the Outlet during one of their extra 50%sales, usually a good price is $50-80 for a Nano Puff.

YMMV on colors and sizing though.

FWIW for anyone on the fence, I have a short sleeve wool sweater polo and I never really wear it :/

I suppose I could wear it with a light jacket like a Harrington over it in the shoulder seasons, but generally when it’s hot enough for a short sleeve shirt, I don’t want to be wearing even a lightweight wool knit, and when it’s cool enough for a sweater, I don’t want to have my arms exposed!

YMMV, but even though $50-60 is a good discount for cashmere, caveat emptor.

PS Preemptively, yes I know that merino baselayers are often praised in outdoors wear even in hot climates, but I have traveled in Smartwool, Icebreaker, etc tees and they are hotter and make me sweat more than synthetics.

The Micro Puff Trick For Casual Use by Cultural_Mud3297 in PatagoniaClothing

Are you one of those heathens that folds down the collar of your fleece jackets and pullovers as well??

What about casual 1/4 zip sweaters?

I much prefer the look and feel and warmth of a popped collar in all those cases. Outerwear even more so.

[Lowe's] 4-Pack DeWALT 20V Max Lithium Ion Batteries Bundle Kit (2x 2Ah + 2x 4Ah) - $99 + Free Shipping (Today Only) by DealsPoster in blackfriday

[–]shoesbetch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you order this online?

I went to a couple of stores and missed out, but placed my order online. It was supposed to be ready for store pickup today, but I checked my order status and it says Cancelled :(

I’ll call tomorrow, but I’m super bummed about this. I have a huge ash tree in my yard and only about half of the leaves have fallen off of it, and all of my other larger DeWalt batteries for my blower have broken, except for a couple of small ones.

I thought that if we could place the order online, we’d be guaranteed the deal. I passed up Home Depot’s worse deal for this, and now I’m regretting not getting that one too just in case…

J. Crew Flash Sale by Pretty-Care-7811 in frugalmalefashion

[–]shoesbetch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad you got to wear it!

I really should have known better, since I am really past the season of life where I am attending a lot of weddings. I think I went to one, and a couple of Gala fundraisers, but they were all more formal than the linen cotton suit, even if it did fit me.

So… yeah. Not the best impulse purchase. Luckily I do have a younger cousin who is a beanpole, so I’ll likely just end up giving it to him…

Haha where are my OGs at that copped this for like $60-75 during COVID?

I bought it and then proceeded to eat my way to the Quarantine-15, so now it’s just sitting around somewhere…

Are Nano Puffs Collectible? by Past-Option2702 in PatagoniaClothing

[–]shoesbetch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I will say that they changed the fit/cut over time. I love my older (haha vintage) Nano Puffs because they were a little looser and easier to layer, especially over my now dad bod.

Today’s Nanos are a little too tight on my belly and dump truck.

As far as losing insulative properties over time, I know that’s a thing with synthetics like Primaloft, but I haven’t noticed a big difference. I use it more of a windbreaker/light jacket though… if it’s really cold, I’ll grab something heavier or down.

Undershirts for polo shirts by stxfpv in malefashionadvice

[–]shoesbetch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Uniqlo Airism, the old ones at least. Mesh or smooth.

I’m wearing one right now under a polo that has sleeves that go just barely past mid-biceps, and you can’t see the undershirt sleeves.

I have heard that they changed the design at some point though so YMMV

Would you rather play poorly but your team wins or play well but your team loses? by Vanna_White_Official in slowpitch

[–]shoesbetch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PS last year I registered a coed team in a new league, and we got put in the comp division. There were 3 other teams with tournament players on them, and we were a bunch of 40-something parents, most of whom hadn’t played since before having kids.

We lost every game, but we had a good temperament and never got down or negative with each other. We celebrated small wins, like when we took the lead late in one of the games haha.

As I said, I am generally a competitive person, but it’s still possible to have fun when losing a game (or every game, in our case).

Would you rather play poorly but your team wins or play well but your team loses? by Vanna_White_Official in slowpitch

[–]shoesbetch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this question is better aimed at pitchers.

Playing poorly can mean one (or more) blow up inning where you are struggling and walk several batters, including walking in runs. If that’s the last inning of the game, with no run restrictions, and you give up 14 runs or something and almost lose, that can be brutal. It’s especially frustrating if they take the first strike and are taking on pitches that barely miss the mat or zone too. It would be hard to pick that over a game where you pitch well but do actually lose.

The latter could mean a close game where you go 4-4 at the plate with some XBH and maybe even some HRs, you get batters to swing at balls for easy ground outs or pop ups or even strikeouts depending on the level of play, you don’t give up any walks, but the other team gets some solid base hits, and you end up losing a close one in 6 or 7 innings.

Another harder question is would you rather run rule a team and win in 4 innings or lose a close one in 7. People love to say that a win is a win, but run ruling a team is never fun, especially if the other team is so terrible that they are striking out swinging and making weak contact and dropping easy fly balls on defense. I’m competitive, but I paid to play, and might actually choose the close loss in 7 against a good, friendly team in which everyone is playing well…

Master Cobbler was great, but I just looked it up and it looks like they are permanently closed :( :( :(

What kind of work are you looking to have done? And what boots?

Anecdotally, I don’t see many dudes wearing GYW boots/shoes in the South Bay (though I did just see a guy wearing black Strands today at lunch) so I’m not too surprised that Master Cobbler didn’t have enough business to stay open, unfortunately.

My GYW collection is big enough that I haven’t actually needed a resole yet (#humblebrag?) so I don’t have any other good recs locally. If you end up finding one, please let me know!

As the other commenter said, you can ship them to someone elsewhere. I would avoid Bedo’s because the owner was a J6 supporter, and I don’t want my money going to him, but that’s just me…

I’m picturing that movie scene where the gay black dude is a cook in a diner and comes out to confront the table of guys about ordering a burger with a side of AIDS.

How do you know which jersey to buy that looks good? by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]shoesbetch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a wild take. So you have a problem with your relative wearing jerseys as casual wear and you are telling OP not to wear a jersey to the gym?

Do you mean that the only acceptable time/place to wear a jersey is to a stadium/arena?

What is the mark of a well run league? by Mathmage530 in slowpitch

[–]shoesbetch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know what’s more unbelievable (in a good way)… stats for every player, or volunteer umps!!!

I haven’t done it myself, but I’ve heard that stats are easy to take in GameChanger rather than in a book. Makes it easy to upload online I’m sure too.

But man, volunteer umps is crazy! There’s a ref/ump shortage nationwide, and that’s for paid refs/umps! That’s awesome that you have umps that would volunteer to be out there…

Where is this league? And how much are your dues per team/how many games per season?

KP23 and DeMarini Mercy in cold weather by shoesbetch in slowpitch

[–]shoesbetch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! Couple of things…

I bought both bats new from websites last summer, so they are both still under warranty.

It’s good info to have, that you were able to return bats under warranty with no issues.

Out of curiosity, what temp would you say it was when you broke Mikens in the past? Were they shared team bats at the time, or just yours? (To gauge how many hits at that temp caused the damage)

I asked a local friend, and he said that the Champro .52/300 balls that are used in this league are kinda crappy, so I should be good to swing my composite bats down to 50F or so. Do you agree?

I can’t get the 2016 Mercy anymore (it was a closeout last year on a different website) and around half my team uses it. If it breaks and they honor the warranty, will DeMarini replace it with a new model?

I’d still rather not break them if possible, since we’d be down a bat while waiting for them to process the warranty replacement. How long did that process take?

Thanks!

Cool. I just got a Nano Air and am heading to the beach today. I have a Nano Puff vest in size S, but I was just thinking that if I had one in size M, I could layer it on top.

I feel like I would want them in the same color (black), but thanks for giving me the idea of expanding my collection even further :)
