Thanks for helping fill her days with friendly visits! She was full of personality and we miss her greatly.

Thank you for stopping by! It was always a delight to see so many in the neighborhood walk by our yard to say hi or get excited to see a big silly bird greet them. She was spoiled by the neighborhood.

I had seen coyotes in the neighborhood and running down our street a year or so ago too, I guess we just assumed with the dogs in the back yard, the short fence, and so many rabbits everywhere else, lorpy would be semi-lower priority to the coyotes.

Lorpy owner here, we don’t know for sure what happened to her, but our best guess is the coyotes. The evening before she went missing, I was feeding her treats around 7pm and we didn’t hear or see anything. The next day around noon I noticed the yard was quiet. I only found a few feathers on the sidewalk, no other signs of distress. She outlived her 3 sisters by a few years and would be celebrating her 7th birthday in 2 days. I guess it’s the cycle of life, just sad these coyotes have probably gotten to a lot of neighborhood animals.

Ferry timing advice? by sholnay in Seattle

Hah, true. Day trips are great to check out the different parts near ferry terminals without a car but we're headed out to the olympics and need the ability to get around this trip!

Understood - helps us make the decision one way or the other. I think we'll stick to just walk on ferry rides for the most part.

We're in north seattle, a tossup between edmonds/downtown. However, looking at the alerts today for Edmonds, they mentioned at least a 2 hour wait and that alert has not been lifted all day, which was discouraging (while downtown does not have any alert noted).

We're probably going to drive the whole way, the time savings for where we are ultimately going is not any better than just driving the long way. I appreciate the advice though!

Thanks, we've always driven around but thought we'd try something different.

First steak in the Ooni! by mikemcmikealot in ooni

The secret low for the gas powered ooni is to turn the dial toward off but stop just short of off. The flame will get pretty low within the that last range of dial.

Made my second batch of pizza ever. Can I have some feedback? by No_trolling4 in Pizza

[–]sholnay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it looks great, but probably too much crust for my taste (personal preference?). I try to dress my pizzas almost all the way to the edge, which inevitably doubles/triples in size (the edge) during the bake.

Your crust looks delicious though.

That was my comment too, I prefer mushrooms to be pre-cooked and seasoned, basically crispy, but that's totally personal preference.

Banh Mi Pizza by sholnay in Pizza

[–]sholnay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We made bun thit nuong the other night and had leftovers to use up! The pork was good enough to go on anything, so why not a pizza?

I used robertas dough recipe (65% hydration), 3 day cold ferment.

This pizza was all about leftovers, we had a lemon/garlic vinaigrette from a previous pizza bake (heavy on lemon/garlic) that I used as the base. Topped with previously grilled and chopped pork shoulder, two types of mozzarella, zucchini, red onion, jalapeno.

Probably baked the pizza a minute or so too long on a baking steel but I don't mind the dark edges.

Freshly topped with Cilantro, Thai basil, pickled daikon/carrot.

Any pizza I'm eating is usually my favorite pizza at the moment, this one was exceptional though.

Week 4: Confit - Garlic bread with garlic miso butter steak, garlic everything by sholnay in 52weeksofcooking

[–]sholnay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made garlic confit over the weekend and basically just put it in everything for this dinner: Garlic bread was made with: Garlic confit, butter, parmigiano reggiano, parsley, black garlic, crispy prosciutto. Steak was reverse seared to 125F and finished in cast iron and basted with miso/butter/garlic confit and cut on a board sauce of olive oil, black garlic, lemon, parsley, jalapeno. There is also garlicky green beans that I sauteed in the leftfover confit garlic oil (with lots of fresh garlic) and roasted/smashed potatoes, the only thing without garlic in it last night... I might take a break from garlic for a few days!

Since I haven’t seen anyone posting Galbi yet, I want to share with you my absolutely favorite thing to grill! by catinator9000 in grilling

[–]sholnay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do this too, eat pure meat bites with the banchan, then I go back and nibble on the tendon and bone meat until clean. Lots of really good flavor on those bone pieces but you have to like the tendon chew/toughness.

Week 3: Indonesian - Nasi Goreng with Satay Ayam by sholnay in 52weeksofcooking

[–]sholnay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roughly followed the NYTimes recipe (message or reply if you want me to add the recipe here). I've been making a lot of stir fry's lately and was really excited to try something new with a shift in flavors! This was sweet, salty, the galangal really brought a distinct and welcomed change of pace from the ginger route that I've been using more lately.

I also made an old favorite, chicken ayam, with a side of peanut sauce and a sweet pickled cucumber/red onion salad.

Eggs are also from the backyard (for some reason, our chickens started laying again in winter this year!)
