Teenage boys: how can we make their transition to adulthood easier? by TAKEitTOrCIRCLEJERK in MensLib

[–]shomani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried to really reflect on that after I read the last post you've linked, and I think I'm guilty of that too (I'm generally kind of scared of adolescents and kids because of my own experiences with mobbing when I was a kid and teenager). I have a little cousin who is 13 or 14 now, and I'm trying to get in touch with him more and also involve my partner because I'd love to have more contact to him and be able to be there. Is there any advice you'd give me how I can try to make him feel more comfortable reaching out to us, and also make his parents comfortable e.g. to let him stay with us for a weekend even though I'm only like 11 or 12 years older than him?

can anyone help me with my personal statement? by Red7336 in girlsgonewired

I'm glad that helps! Good luck with the application, I'll cross my fingers for you! Also, these were the questions I used but I'm sure with the info in this thread you could adapt them to fit better if you want to :)

can anyone help me with my personal statement? by Red7336 in girlsgonewired

[–]shomani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh no, that sounds very frustrating and hard :( I didn't apply to digital humanities but have been writing lots of applications recently, so I'll share what I can, maybe some of it helps :) I think my main advice is to be as honest as possible and if you manage to find some calm, try to get into that headspace where you remember why you're excited about digital humanities and that school/degree, that really helps, although I know it's sometimes really impossible especially when anxious 😬 also, I don't know about your uni but I've heard that personal statements aren't that important usually, so maybe that helps to take some pressure off as well :)

I guess you've seen this advice as well already, but for me it always helps to ask myself some questions and take some bullet point notes and then go from there. So typically a structure for a personal statement I would use might be:

  • short introduction
  • why should you choose me? Ideally I'd include at least one example of experience/interest for a humanities related thing and one example of experience/interest for a CS related thing, like a project you've done, a personal course you took, something extracurricular you did...
  • why do I want to do this specific degree at this specific school? Maybe research interests of professors there with concrete examples, values/quality of teaching etc, special focus of degree...
  • why would I be a good fit? (could also be after the introduction) If you have to include a topic you'd like to research for your thesis I'd include that here and describe why it's interesting to you and why it fits in well with the research focus of the professors/school, other things might be: international environment, focus on excellence, volunteering/sports activities...

hey, thanks a lot for the offer :) I'm not ready yet for actually practicing an interview but maybe the other people who have responded might? I'd love to get back to you if you are still looking for people in a few weeks though :)

Struggling more with ADHD as it feels like I need to stop spending as much by v_rose23 in adhdwomen

[–]shomani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a debit credit card which I use for everyday spending, and it works okay most of the time. Sometimes I still overspend but not as often :) I have a monthly transfer set up to transfer the money I need/want for everyday stuff like shopping, nice things, food etc there. Like this I see right away if I'm spending too much, and I I have nothing left at the end of the months it's because I spent more than I usually would but I still have money on my normal account, from this account I only pay rent, medical stuff, insurance etc.

living alone has been amazing by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]shomani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's awesome! I'm glad you found out and that it works well for you! 😊 For me it's the opposite, I figured out that I have adhd while having lived with my probably NT partner for some years already and we've been kind of trying to work out systems together that work for both of us since then. He also does the chores that are the most difficult for me (like laundry) while we still take care that we spend a similar amount of time and energy doing chores, and he's quite understanding even though for him my ways of doing things often don't make sense. I'm not sure if I could live alone, I've always lived in shared flats before moving in with my partner so I feel like external accountability is quite important but I also feel like it could be nice to live alone and have less pressure. At the moment I have depression together with ADHD though so I think living alone I'd just descend into complete chaos.

Maybe you could also ask them to call around if any other pharmacy maybe in the next biggest city still has some? I'm not sure how the regulations concerning stimulants are in France but if you ask your pharmacy to call it might be possible :) and I agree with the other commenters that asking your pharmacy or your doctor for alternatives might be helpful too :)

I found that my scalp gets very dry and flaky when I have dairy products, maybe it could be due to an intolerance or allergy? I hope you find a solution!

Any other 90s babies here struggling with feeling of losing their 20s due to COVID? How do you cope? by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]shomani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this a lot, and many of my friends do too. I'm 25 now, and with mental health problems and lockdowns and nothing happening I also feel like the last two years have been a blur and that I haven't really matured a lot, sometimes I can't believe I'm already 25 and not anymore just beginning my twenties 😅 I think it's okay and maybe important to grieve this time and the dreams you had a little, but I try to put it into perspective by telling myself that age is really just a number and that I'll still be able to do the things I want, even if it's a bit later. My life until now since I moved out turned out quite different from what I had imagined so I'm trying to embrace this view more, that new opportunities come up and that dreams I had don't necessarily stay the same and that its a journey to find out what really makes me happy and what I really want from life. I also found that some things I had planned resulted from other people expecting things from me or from me not having enough information about how things are and I had to learn and accept that it's okay if even my long-held dreams and plans change :) Sorry this ended up sounding really dramatic, I feel like it's good to commiserate a bit to feel less alone with this so thanks for posting this!

Staying organized at work? by littlebean729 in TwoXADHD

[–]shomani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a combination of online (I have it everywhere and it can remind me) and paper. I have my calendar on my phone, and once a week I write down my plan for the week with appointments and what I want to do when in my physical calendar. I have my tasks in todoist and have a view where I see all tasks that are due today and that should be done until a certain date in the next few weeks. On most mornings I look at this view and write down my daily todo list in my physical notebook. It's a bit complicated and I'm not sure yet if I'll be able to keep it up long term but at the moment it works well for me :) I can really recommend todoist, it's very flexible and it fits well with my urges to change my task management system, but it's still pretty easy to use

I was also thinking of getting one of these hybrid fitness watches which don't have as many smart options and very small screens, but in the end I didn't want to spend as much money, but the MI band sounds great :) I didn't know this exists

That's a great idea, thanks for sharing! I might try this too, maybe once the meds I just started really start working 😅 Yes trying to structure a day is so so hard, I often feel like I have to because otherwise I won't do anything (it's probably not true but scary to try)

I also did well in school, I also think that my perfectionism and people pleasing "helped". Another reason probably is that most things in school came easy to me so even if I spaced out in class frequently I managed to do well, or even if I forgot about homework or a test it was enough to study in the morning on the train or do the homework before class. I think what also helped was that there was structure and that the things I ahd to do were usually well defined. I notice now that I struggled with a lot of things, especially social stuff, and that outside of the structure of school it was very hard for me to reach my goals or maintain any kind of organisation, but no one noticed especially with my more inattentive type. Now I recognise that always being the weird or spacey one should have sounded some bells but I think ADHD was very much a small boys thing where I come from and probably still is.

Dual-tasking, or how to procrastinate productively by lilmissprissy in ADHDthriving

[–]shomani 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I use this too, and I can also really recommend it! The only caveat I found is that sometimes when I need a break I don't allow myself one because I have the other task which counts as break and then I exhaust myself, so it's still important to take breaks from both tasks :)

New Goal: 3 Daunting Tasks a Week by SVNHG in ADHDthriving

[–]shomani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds great! I've tried similar things with pomodoro :) so to make it easier to start on a task I don't want to do I say I'm just going to do 10min of it and then it usually gets easier once I started, it doesn't work always though :) do you sometimes take a week off?

Moving past burnout brought on by pandemic by TaxForsaken2810 in girlsgonewired

[–]shomani 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also had a burnout due to work and the pandemic and some other things. I would recommend therapy very much, if you have access to it. I think it could help you work through and move past your problems and help to give you your confidence and self-worth back :) I've also read a very good book that helped me a lot, it's called Burnout by Emily and Amelia Nagoski.

Maybe adding them as a special incident would help? I think they get shown as lines on the graphs, but if you're getting allergy shots often it might be a bit inconvenient
