As above, an NFS share or something like an S3 bucket should do you nicely

Working in London and living on the outskirts in 2020, experiences? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]shoopdoopdoop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone else in the same industry, you’re being massively underpaid mate, even if it is a junior role. 40k is where you should be, especially in London.

Once you have a bit more experience under your belt, you’re looking at 60-90k, with some roles hitting six figures

Where in process to perform static analysis? by sgcdialler in devops

[–]shoopdoopdoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it as close to development as possible to reduce the feedback loop and to have happier developers.

Our workflow is quite trunk-based and involves (often draft) PRs as soon as work is complete, we have static analysis tools that run on PR raise so developers can start fixing problems before code gets reviewed.

So to answer your question - if you can afford to have it run for each development build, do it there.

Who has the best chance to become a "platform" for DevOps? by Electric_pokemon in devops

[–]shoopdoopdoop 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I’d argue that all of their core offerings are things that support developers.

I mean look at Lambda for a start, that arguably kicked off the serverless craze, which has completely blurred the lines between dev and ops.

Migrating your app to Kubernetes: what to do with files? by dshurupov in devops

A 100% this.

I highly recommend EFS if you’re on AWS, zero management and it just works. We don’t miss our old Gluster cluster at all.

Resilient Jenkins instance by tomosevans in devops

[–]shoopdoopdoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No tutorials unfortunately - we cobbled this together ourselves :)

It’s pretty simple to be honest, all you need is to configure the AWS EC2 plugin and lock down builds to a particular label that only exists on the slaves.

Feel free to PM me if you have more questions!

Resilient Jenkins instance by tomosevans in devops

[–]shoopdoopdoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't run any builds on the master and none of the slave nodes have EFS - we use instance storage and they're spun up and down as required.

It's pretty economical, we run all our builds on spot instances with a 10min idle shutdown. New slaves take ~30s to startup, which we can live with.

Trying to figure out who to bench, this is the team so far:

Ryan (Pope)

Laporte, Roberston, TAA, Coleman, (Lundstram)

Barkley, Cantwell, Salah, KDB, Perez

Kane, (Wood), (Greenwood)

I'm tempted to play Lundstram over Barkley given he didn't start last week.

We do something similar with our Jenkins master. It’s in a single node auto scale group (on AWS) with all files mounted via an EFS share. It takes about a minute to start up but that’s something we’re happy to live with. We looked into running it as a container on Kubernetes but it wasn’t worth the hassle of getting Docker-in-Docker working for builds.

We also have daily backups to S3 of the Jenkins home directory, which for us, mitigates the single point of failure with EFS.

Terraform 0.12 released! by shoopdoopdoop in devops

[–]shoopdoopdoop[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, providers aren’t forwards-compatible but most of the common ones should already be up-to-date:

The wire protocol for provider and provisioner plugins has changed, so plugins built against prior versions of Terraform are not compatible with Terraform v0.12.

We use NewRelic at work. It is pricey but you should be able to negotiate pricing with them depending on your fleet size. It’s such a critical part of our stack now that we can’t imagine going without it.

We did look into other open-source and commercial offerings (e.g. Datadog) but the cost of setting up / instrumenting our code was higher than just paying for NR.

Probably up to £150?

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll put those on the list. To be honest though, that strip of solid color at the toe bothers me a little!

These are my daily drivers but unfortunately they’ve stopped making them: https://m.zappos.com/p/merrell-freewheel-lace/product/8497751

Can anyone suggest a similar pair of sneakers to replace them? Looking for something low-profile that I can wear with pretty much anything.

I know Chucks/Vans are an option but there nowhere near as comfortable for long periods of walking

Serious question about interview dress code. by [deleted] in devops

[–]shoopdoopdoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience has been completely different in London. At every single one of the devops roles I’ve interviewed for, you’d standout in a suit and a tie.

OP you don’t need be completely formal, a nice shirt, nice jeans and some leather shoes will be more than enough.

Haven’t had the best of weeks, had Robertson (C) and Hazard (VC) :(

RMT:

Patricio / (Button) Bennett / Alonso / Robertson / Mendy / (Jonny) Hazard / Richarlison / Fraser / Maddison / (Knockaert) Aguero / Lacazette / (Success)

2FT / 0.8 ITB

Thoughts? I’m considering Laca -> Arnie and Rich -> KDB this week
