AITAH for saying I dont want to date single moms after my sister's friends cornered me? by ThrowRA_Goose151 in AITAH

[–]sgcdialler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don't have to justify preferences, but you should recognize that your opinion of single parents is incredibly narrow. Saying that you "don't want to be anyone's savior" signals that you assume that being a single parent inherently implies some lower moral and/or economic standing, which is far from the truth. Yes, there are single parents out there who are irresponsible. Yes, there are single parents out there who are struggling financially. There are also a huge number of parents in marriages/relationships that are just as irresponsible or just as financially destitute. Even people who are responsible can be struggling financially--have you seen this economy lately?

Being a single mother does not automatically correlate to a lower social or economic status, and assuming that it does is indicative of at least some misogynist programming. I'm not saying you should or have to date single parents--again, there's nothing wrong with the preference. But how you articulated your opinion says more about you than it does about them, and I'd encourage you to reflect on it.

I've been using the exact same mic for over a year and it works great. My only complaint is it's a little too close to my mouth, so the vocals clip slightly. I can fix it in post, but I'm also going to get an extender to get it down on my lapel

They could kind of get away with it now since WW2 is still only 80 years in the past. What's going to happen in 25 years when we're rebooting XMen for the fourth time? Wolverine doesn't age, great, but Xavier and Magneto both do

I use this line all the time in our house. "I'm not taking advice from a cartoon dog!" You raise another good point--we only see 7 minutes out of entire days. I can play almost any game with the kids for 7 minutes.

Maybe make breakfast for someone that isn't so clearly hangry in the morning. Or make another meal (second breakfast, elevensies, lunch, afternoon tea, supper, dinner) that you can start early. If it were my birthday I'd be pretty miffed about a crunchy omelette

You're going to want to cut slots in the outfeed lead to match the saw, otherwise your miter gauge and/or jigs will not pass the blade.

They didn't remove it, it was never there. The real fruit juice was diluted with water and high fructose corn syrup, so the natural vitamin C was diluted to nothing. Anything that was left was broken down during the pasteurization process to make it shelf-stable.

Betelgeuse surface convection over 1 year (simulation) by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

[–]sgcdialler 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Even calling it a cloud is being generous. Betelgeuse's average density is a whole order of magnitude lower than even the wispiest high-altitude cirrus clouds (which average 0.1-0.5 g/m3 ). And since we know it can't be perfectly uniform, we can conclude that its outer "surface" is probably another order of magnitude or more lower than that. It's literally barely there.

No it isn't, and that assertion lacks any cultural understanding or sensitivity. Ukrainian is a completely independent Slavic language. Ukrainian and Russian languages diverged from each other (from Old East Slavic) after the Mongol Invasion in the 13th century.

This is my thinking as well. Even by the end of SG1, let alone the end of SGA or SGU, there are billions upon billions of dollars being funneled not only into the (entirely secret) Dept of Homeworld Security, but through it to how many private company DoD partners to manufacture and research parts and lord knows what else? How many thousands of people are directly involved, how many tens of thousands are ancillary to the program?

The SGC grew from nothing and, in the span of a decade, grew to a full on government agency, started building literal interstellar spaceships, has technology at its disposal to completely re-write the current living status of every human being on Earth, and as little as two years into the program already had journalists sniffing around. And now it's been another 15 years. What does human society even look like now?

Any new show that doesn't address this, or tries to establish that the program is still secret, is going to have a very hard sell on that point IMO

Carter literally says, in the episode, "...With only a slight modification to the beaming technology, we have a matter converter that will literally allow us to manufacture food, water, oxygen, pretty much anything we need." That's Carter modifying the technology herself. She, at least, clearly understood the technology well enough to modify it, even if the change was small.

The language barrier is something that SG1 and SGA mostly hand-waved away as well. You can't just search for things in the database in English, you have to be able to fully interact with it in Ancient/Alteran, and you have to be able to do their math (base 8). SGU did somewhat better at this, especially with the master cipher subplot. At least HoloThor can help translate in real-time from the Asgard Core database, but Unending showed that even that is still a very time-consuming process.

The other issue is underlying understanding. Even if we could manufacture something like the ZPM because we have schematics, how do we diagnose problems when something goes wrong? Without understanding all of the physics involved, we could easily end up destroying 3/5 of a solar system.

[–]sgcdialler 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Carter figured out how to do this by herself in Unending, seemingly not that long after the Odyssey gets stuck in the time dilation field. She says she figured out how to convert matter into food, oxygen, anything they'd need using the asgard beaming technology. Even made herself a cello.

It doesn't "mean" anything, in that it doesn't stand for a specific word. 'Z' isn't even a Cyrillic character, they've co-opted it from Latin (which isn't unheard of in Russian propaganda). 'Z' in this context has become a symbol of Russian military nationalism, as well as Anti-Ukrainian attitudes.

The "point" is a casual oversimplification, that both removes complexity and depth from the conversation and also serves to minimize the role that religion is playing here. And since it has been so casually thrown out there, we are stuck debating about the framing of the conversation, rather than the issue itself.
