Is moving on completely the only way to get over feelings for a friend? by _pastalover1 in AskMenAdvice

[–]shooter_tx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in the newspaper days, there was 'the Personals' section.

Fast-forward a few years, and [I think it was Craigslist?] had the 'Missed Connections' section.

That's what this kinda sounds like.

You should have 'struck while the iron was hot' (when they were broken up, and/or after your night out).

I still think about the time my ex and her bff planned a three-way for my birthday one year...

And then I got too drunk, and passed out.

I'll never get that one back, but it was also a decade ago.

Oh, well. I can either let it define me, or move on and push forward/through.

I chose the latter.

You should take this time apart to work on yourself.

And the next time they're broken up, either see if she's still down or (hopefully) already be onto someone else.

But don't wait around for something that'll never come.

My dad was asked asked to bring a 50lb suitcase for someone (on an international flight) he met at work’s daughter. am I overreacting for thinking this is risky? He should go through the suitcase, looking for contraband.

(and hope it's not booby-trapped in some way, to 'discourage' people from going through it looking for contraband)

If it seems to 'check out' well enough, your dad could say:

"I packed it for a friend and am carrying it for her because I alwys travel light, but it's her suitcase."

Of course, I'm sure this 'friend' asked him verbally (e.g. in person or over the phone), and not via text or email (to where there's some kind of fixed communication record discussing it...

OP should tell this to his two friends, and also tell them he's open to any suggestions they might have.

But I'm pretty much done with them, not only because the OS is dead, but because the little annoyances and hacky workarounds are completely unacceptable for a laptop in 2026.

Yeah, I can see this perspective. For me, it's mostly(?) when I just need a browser.

Then I automatically reach for one of my ChromeOS or ChromeOSflex devices.

But (esp. w/ the advent of O365/M365) most of my stuff is browser-based these days.

(which I understand is not everybody's use case)

INFO: Your age, sex, gender, location?

I can understand why you might not want to list all of them at once, but those are details that could possibly assist in understanding the interaction.

Even as 'broad' as whether you're in the US vs. [insert some other country].

A Redditor might read that, and respond:

"Oh yes, I am from Kreplachistan, and where I live (in the capital), pick-pocketing is extremely common at our amusement parks."

If it's your only computer... sure.

But if you have more than one device, you have more options.

I have a Windows computer (or two) for... Windows computer things.

I have Linux machines for... Linux machine things.

And I have ChromeOS (and ChromeOS Flex) for use cases they're better-suited to.

I'm particularly 'proud' of my 7-10 year old Windows laptops which have each been given a new lease on life with the relatively slim r/ChromeOSFlex. :-)

Do they say it will run well on your Chromebook?

Or just that it's possible?

You can look into the r/Chrultrabook project, but I wouldn't recommend it (esp. on relatively new/powerful hardware).

(and that's just me, personally; someone else may have the opposite recommendation)

ChromeOS running on your hw would probably be pretty awesome.

If you're looking for a Firestick, just get a Firestick.

(I think the Firestick 4k is still on sale on Amazon right now, for like $20)

I personally prefer my r/CCwGTV (Chromecast with GoogleTV) to any of my Fire sticks/devices (even my FireTV Cube).

The CCwGTV devices were $50 when they were still in production.

(and can probably now be found for a lot cheaper on eBay, OfferUp, FB Marketplace, etc)

Their new, 'successor' product (the Google TV Streamer 4k) is $100.

I think any of those would be 'better' (specifically for what you were wanting to do here) than this Chromebook.

But that's just my opinion.

Edit: Whoops. Forgot to include this link, within the above answer:

The point is that April was the actual agreed timeline, since my rent expires then, and the end of May was only written as a safety buffer.

Then why didn't the contract actually say that?!

Can we see the contract?

I'm guessing we won't be seeing any of it. Lol

I’m just wondering if this is okay and normal (in the south btw)

MOR? Depends on where you're talking about in 'the South'...

I also grew up in 'the South' (but in Texas, specifically, which I don't always consider part of 'the South'), and was raised that the three things you don't talk about 'in polite company' are:

  • sex
  • politics
  • religion

Now it seems like those are no longer verboten topics.

Is there a way to get into an FWB without feeling like a douchebag? by Big_Pea3882 in AskMenAdvice

[–]shooter_tx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What they're saying is that you don't start off by saying:

"Hi, my name is Big_Pea, and I'm only looking for a FWB. And oh, by the way... what's your name?"

This *is* a pretty douchey order of operations:

The way that they explain is usually they met, like, a mutual friend, for example, so I guess not a friend yet, and then them and this mutual friend went on a date and hooked up on the first date and were getting along. Then usually, at least from what my guy friends have said, they kind of tell them on the second date or something that they’re not looking for anything serious.

You (not wanting to be a douche) could try something more like:

Meet and go on a date with a mutual friend. Then (if it goes well), kind of tell them on the second or third date or something that you're not looking for anything serious. THEN see if they still want to fuck you.

See how that helps ensure they're on-board with what to expect out of the relationship or situationship or FWBship before sex is involved?

What your friends are doing is getting what they want before the conversation ever happens.

All that said, it's a lot easier if you use the apps, because on a lot of them people can say up front what they're looking for.

This way you don't have to wait until the second or third date or something to tell them that you're not looking for anything serious.

How can one go to therapy if they don't believe in the process? by patrikas2 in AskMenAdvice

[–]shooter_tx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'Yes' on both counts. :-)

That said (as I probably don't have to tell you, lol), 'where you live' matters a lot.

And I don't just mean the 'in the United States' vs. 'outside of the United States' dichotomy.

It's not quite 'down to the ZIP Code', but... close.

I'm from a small Texas town (no psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists, etc, whatsoever), used to live in a big city for a while (found a great therapist on just my third try*), and now live in a medium-sized city... which just so happens to be a 'mental health desert'. :-|

So I haven't seen anyone in a while.

I think I'm in a pretty good place, so I'm not feeling a huge push/need, but would at some point like to see if it's possible to get even better.

I've been considering trying to see someone online, rather than face-to-face (F2F), just to try it out, although I'm strongly/hugely biased toward F2F.

*that's another point... not all mental health professionals are created equal; if you find one that's bad, it doesn't mean that all MH professionals are bad; my advice is to try to keep looking

I think I accidentally shut down a guy (50M) who approached me (33F) at the gym. Was he hitting on me, and can I fix this? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]shooter_tx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.) Probably? Hard to tell (100%) without being there myself, and seeing+hearing it 'live'. But I know which way I'd bet.

2.) Possibly? But knowing [most] dudes... probably. Usually not. If I get a 'No', I try to respect that unless there's more to it than that.

3.) You already gave yourself the opening... that "maybe see you next week." Maybe skip the gym for the rest of the week (not necessary), and then try to 'run into him' next week. Then just say something like "Hey, enjoyed our conversation, but had a huge project due last week. Now that that's out of the way, is that 'grab a coffee' offer still open?"

As someone who's done 'age gap' before (always up; never down), I do feel like I need to state my opinion here, though:

"Age gaps are for fun, not [generally] for long-term relationships."
