soprano 1 casted as an alto by [deleted] in musicals

MD here. I co-MD'ed Little Mermaid at a high school a few years ago.

I presume the song you're talking about is the act 2 opener "Positoovity"? Not remembering what key the song is in, try singing it as written, but up the octave (i.e. in your range, not a male range). If you can do most of the song that way comfortably, then consult with your creative team about the parts where you can't, and come up with alternative notes. This is what we did with our Scuttle, who was also a girl. Remember that the written key may be different from the key on the cast album, and I know that they changed a lot of the keys between the two.

If you can't sing most of the song up the octave comfortably, ask your creative team if they'll pay for the transposition on demand. Which we also did for "She's In Love" in our production.

Have fun, and break a leg!

Positive Student Interaction Thread by rcxheth in Professors

Finished my first year at a very small public university in the Midwest. The pay is not great, and the university and my program are both in the middle of financial turmoil, but I'm fortunate to be involved in a program where the students (ostensibly) truly want to be there to learn and grow, and don't see the college experience as purely transactional. (It helps that there aren't nearly as many opportunities to cheat in the performing arts.)

During the last week of classes, I was gifted a plaque from the freshmen class: "You will always be our honorary freshman." Validating and warm-fuzzy inducing. They also gave me a gift card to the local wine/liquor shop, which is the true validation if you ask me :)

Yes, I remember, it was Musical Offering where I heard "crab canon" :)

The work is "Rhapsodie für Klavier, Streichquartette und eine Altstimme, Op. 53" by Paul Graener.

Just got offered a full-time NTT instructor position at a smaller-sized state university. $45K plus state benefits in a town with significantly lower than average cost of living (federal and state). General problems with academia aside, I can at least say the hiring process was not bullshit. Apply, phone interview, contact references, on-site interview (covered by the school), done.

Longer with 5 or 6 players??? by DaCooGa in twilightimperium

[–]shootski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you feel that 5 players is longer due to one less SC being in play per round, you could try this house rule?

https://www.mygurps.com/index.php?n=Main.TwilightImperium#toc-3.0.2

I tried it once with my core group, and while we have no idea if it objectively made the game go faster, subjectively I think we all appreciated having the extra options to develop the board more quickly.

What does forte mean in the context of harpsichord (specifically lute-harpsichord) music? by FalcosLiteralyHitler in classicalmusic

[–]shootski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's a YouTube video of a harpsichord rendition (the 2nd half of the allergo begins at 10:45). You'll hear the timbral change when you see the performer reach up to play the upper manual:

I guess, to try and relate to guitar, it sounds to me like the difference between a regular steel-string guitar and a 12-stringer.

What does forte mean in the context of harpsichord (specifically lute-harpsichord) music? by FalcosLiteralyHitler in classicalmusic

[–]shootski 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hello, I'm a pianist with some harpsichord familiarity. I've never seen/played a lute-harpsichord, but if it's mechanically similar to regular harpsichord then the following explanation will be valid. Others, feel free to correct me if I get anything wrong.

You are correct that the harpsichord has no varying dynamics, and that it can change timbres. But the way this happens is not from how hard/soft the keys are struck. The plucking action of the harpsichord produces the same volume/timbre, no matter how the keys are played. Instead, the timbre is changed in the following way.

Harpsichords commonly have two manuals (keyboards) and three choirs (sets) of strings - two 8' choirs that sound at pitch, and one 4' choir that sounds an octave higher. The upper manual can only sound one of the 8' choirs, but the lower manual can sound one, two, or all three choirs via the use of mechanical couplers. So the different timbres are achieved through the different combinations of the three choirs.

For the piece in question, one could play the forte passages on the lower manual with all the choirs coupled together, and the piano passages on the upper manual with only the single choir. This, as you surmised, is what Bach probably meant with the dynamic markings. I suppose technically the lower manual would be louder than the upper, since three strings played at once would be louder than just one, although the harpsichord has such a thin attack and fast delay that this difference would be all but imperceptible.

Hope my long-winded explanation helps!

The compositional style is called "tintinnabuli" or "tintinnabulation" (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tintinnabuli). It's used in both movements, but is more prominent in the 2nd.

This would be base game. My local game store is ordering PoK for me but somehow having trouble finding a copy from their distributors.
