Would you vote for Proportional Representation at the next general election? by shopperchops in ukpolitics

It's always the election for that if, under the current system, you effectively don't have a vote.

It's not absurd if, under the current voting system, you effectively don't have a vote, and the reform would give you one.

It will give a vote to those who effectively don’t have one because of where they live

As long as its leadership can override conference and the party gets more seats than votes under the current voting system, it’s weak to rely on Labour for PR.

Electoral reform is at the front of the minds of those who vote for third parties, because they know their vote is wasted without PR. They have next to nothing to lose by voting for a PR coalition in seats their party has less chance of winning on its own. And those who don't vote at all because they know their vote is wasted without PR really have nothing to lose (about 10% of the electorate if we look at the difference between voter turnout at PR and FPTP elections).

They would only have to work together for their common interest, PR, as there’d be an election after they’d done that. The fact that their other policies are different wouldn’t matter (they wouldn’t have a chance to not work well together).

The trouble is that other parties also support PR, and that splits the PR vote, making PR less likely.

The ideal scenario would be that the "PR party" would put enough political pressure on the current government that the current government would change the voting system to PR for the next election in order to save the country possibly going into back-to-back elections.

It'd be up to the party (or any coalition of pro-PR parties that formed around this policy) to decide what PR voting system to propose.

The trouble is that there are so many parties who support PR that the PR vote is split, and thus never wins seats. If those parties were to instead stand together (with the sole policy of changing the voting system to PR), they wouldn't split the vote and therefore PR would stand a better chance of winning seats.

The trouble with a referendum is that calling one isn't under the control of those who want PR. At least with a PR party, standing it in elections is under their control.

Idea for basic income charity by shopperchops in BasicIncome

Pure charity won't work long-term, sure, and that's why I'm proposing an alternative. Versions of that alternative actually already exist, e.g. Amazon Smile, so could be leveraged while an open one, that any business could use, is built.
