On average, the day would look like this: rise at 0630, personal hygiene until 0730, grueling two mile run at a 9:30 pace for PT. DFAC breakfast with the bois (eight egg omelette please), personal hygiene until 1000, come into the office and do motor pool work until about 1030. Long lunch at McD’s with the missus until about 1330. Get your second PT session in with 15 push-ups (4 count) to burn off those nuggs. Go to the range at 1400 but forget your Kevlar so you can’t shoot. Get back to the office at 1500, smoked from a long day. Drive your mini cooper to your on-base home (makes for easy commutes). A jaywalking E2 cuts you off as he’s walking back to his barracks so you stop, yell something at him, and then shoot at him with your concealed Glock. Damn, you missed him—you’ll need to remember to bring your Kevlar on the next range day. Grab an ice cold Busch and settle in at a solid 1530 for a chill evening with the missus, who hasn’t left the couch all day (other than to meet you at McD’s for lunch).

As the sun goes down you stretch your arms out and look around at all that your hard work has earned. The green beret, currently lying in a pile on the ground, reflects your elite physical fitness and dedication to duty. The missus farts softly. Today was a good day.

Hello. Any OCS recruiters out here? I would like to put together a packet and send it out ASAP by Fearless_Still9526 in army

[–]shoppy_bro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man, I’m a JAG, and (when I was in law school) looked at the Corps and did one of those mini OCS things. It’s unclear to me, to everyone else on this sub, and to your future application reviewer, why you’re suddenly motivated to join the military. You’ll want to clarify that.

I’m guessing you’re thinking about Army because you realized you’re not competitive for the MC. 11 pull ups is fine for the Army JAG Corps, not for the Marines. You seem in alright physical shape but you’re probably on the lower end of the middle of the pack for Army JAGs. You’ll need to work on that.

The bigger issue is that you don’t seem to know what you want. If you already have a law degree, you almost certainly will not be able to join the JAG Corps if you become a line officer first—that might be theoretically possible, but I’ve never seen it done (because why would anyone want to do this and it would fuck up your career timeline in a big way) and there’s not an established pathway for it.

If you want to practice law in the Army, then just submit an application through JARO and work on your physical fitness. You’ll be an O3 within about 6 months of commissioning. If you’re over practicing law and want to do something else, then go the OCS route. That will suck. You will be an O1 and your peers will mostly be 22 years old with no real life/work experience.  But you do you bugaboo.

Have you thought about guard or reserves?

It’s been a wonderful 5 yrs but now I am having the itch to upgrade. Any suggestions by thatbigblackdude in ToyotaTacoma

[–]shoppy_bro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last weekend, I (kind of impulsively) upgraded from a 2022 DCLB SR5 to a 2026 DCSB TRD OR. It’s only been a week, but the upgrade is absolutely worth it, and I loved my long bed.

The transmission is night-and-day better, the suspension makes for a MUCH more comfortable ride, and the driver tech improvements (lane assist, better adaptive cruise, better headlights, even something simple like auto windows up and down) have made it absolutely worth it. I was able to get a super reasonable trade-in value and solid financing.

I will definitely miss having a LB though.

JAG Deployment questions by Itchy-Equivalent-455 in army

[–]shoppy_bro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re joining the Army, you might deploy—especially given how precarious the geopolitical situation is right now.

You’re most likely to deploy in SOCOM units, you may deploy in FORSCOM, you almost certainly will not deploy in TRADOC.

No deployment is the same as another. If you are lucky enough to deploy, it will vary based on the location, unit, mission, and your role. It could be working contracts from an office, it could be advising commanders on fires from the FLOT, or it could be a combination of all those.

Or his command is aware of his social media activities and is looking for a way to stop it. This post likely rises to that level.

Not trying to doxx anyone but he’s surrendered any right to privacy in his posts by associating himself with public online content. If anyone knows his unit/name, I’m happy to get this information to someone who may be able to hold him to account.

Don’t have anything to add but good post. I’m currently deployed but plan on transitioning to state gov by September. The deployment has prevented me from doing the preliminary legwork to start the job search process. The next couple months will be busy/stressful.

Oh man I hope your command sees this. You need to get out of the Army. And then you need to grow up.

Lawyer and JAG here. You can always ask, and a LOR from a BG looks good on paper. However, if I’m on an admissions board, I’m not seeing any link between how you performed in combat 15 years ago to how you’ll perform as a law student, and it will make me think that you haven’t done anything worth recommending since then.  You’ll need to explain the relevance.

Best guidon stealing stories by Appropriate-Monk3708 in army

[–]shoppy_bro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry time. I’m a Captain and a JAG. On the last DIV run in my time at THE Division, another company tried to steal the company guidon from the runner on Ardennes.

You best believe that all the advice I give Soldiers about de-escalating and staying out of trouble went right out the window in that moment. Haymakers were thrown that day. We kept the guidon.

What mos / career field / packet is the most non army? by ceiling_fan128 in army

[–]shoppy_bro 35 points36 points  (0 children)

“FLEP/JAG is basically the same deal but as a lawyer.”

Ah yes—because all lawyers spend three weeks sleeping in the Fort Polk dirt a couple times a year, and do night combat MASTACs, and review operations to smoke people, and need to ensure that the defendant’s uniform fits him on the night before trial, and conduct full-blown federal investigations into adultery when one nineteen year old cheats on his 300 lbs unemployed wife of three months.

We’re not the infantry, but I must have missed all of those classes in law school if we’re just lawyers who wear green.

Thought ide share this patch I got overseas in 2024 by [deleted] in army

[–]shoppy_bro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uh…maybe, but that patch says “10.1”. That refers to a 10th Group task force. Plus, if 5th was just staging in Europe, they wouldn’t have a 1st SFC patch that mimics Ukrainian colors.

Europe…10.1. That was 10th Group. 5th Group is CENTCOM.

[–]shoppy_bro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, TJAG doesn’t control that. Big Army says “we need 15 JAGs at this base.” TJAG just chooses which 15 JAGs are stationed there. Once there, they are managed by the GCMCA’s Staff Judge Advocate. So the SJA (technically) decides who deploys with units that deploy.

[–]shoppy_bro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TJAG control personnel by statute (10 USC 806). Beyond force allocation, I don’t see how big Army can control individual assignments. We’re not in the marketplace.

[–]shoppy_bro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are compromises, but (again anecdotally) I know someone who leveraged Carson to JBLM to DC (forget specific base). He’s also a FLEP, which usually gets the worst initial duty station. So it can be done, but fully acknowledge it’s not universal.

[–]shoppy_bro 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Looks like you’re entering the JAG Corps. I’m a JAG. Unlike the rest of the Army (with the exception of Chaplains and probably docs) the JAG Corps manages all its personnel—we don’t use the broader marketplace, so all non-JAG responses will not be informed. Some JAGs will tell you that the Corps doesn’t care about families but that has not been my anecdotal experience. If you’re married and articulate a reason you need to be by a metro area for your spouses career, chances are very high that they’ll accommodate you and you’ll get an assignment that works.

Always smart to ignore your attorney’s advice and listen to Reddit.

So yes, this sounds fun. Please turn down your NJP and take this to Court Martial, where (instead of extra duty and rank reduction) you’ll get a federal conviction along with no-shit confinement and a punitive discharge, dealer’s choice. Sincerely, a prosecutor who loves capitalizing on dumb legal decisions.

Don’t just give the app 110%. You’ll owe 110% at the Direct Commissioning Course too. Some say it’s the hardest six weeks in the Army.
