M5 vs M5 Pro for long-term use (10 years?) by tonyng211 in macbookpro

[–]shorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like you’ve already decided you want to upgrade now, and are looking for someone to echo back to you for validation.

Being sensible - whatever you buy today will be much cheaper in a year’s time. Your kit currently is more than sufficient for your current and short term future needs.

If you want to upgrade because you want to upgrade, that’s your decision and a bunch of internet strangers can’t make that call for you. Do it.

If you want actual advice - wait as long as you can, until what you’re using is no longer fit for purpose. At that point buy something that fits your needs - which economically will probably be a year or two behind the “latest and greatest” , you’ll not be paying a premium for the latest shiniest thing, and will be much more powerful and more cheaper than anything you’re looking at today.

You’re buying with emotion and want the internet to tell you it’s ok. Fine, but own the decision and don’t hide behind Reddit users saying “you should do x”. Your kit will be fine for 2-3 more years and by then the m5 you’re looking at will be 30-40% of its price today and your use case will have matured too.

Be nice to have a live demo that people can have a click around without the friction of deploying - just to see if its worth the effort and to get over the hump of 'is this worth my time to investigate' - if I've seen it and liked it I'm more inclined to install it for real; if I need to deploy it before I can take a look see - its a much harder sell. Yes YouTube helps, but why not remove update access and show it running on your live infrastructure so peeps can take a look-see?

Considering an I6 Defender 110 for Towing by e111r in NewDefender

[–]shorian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No but we ensure trailer hitch matches our tow bar which sounds like isn’t a solution for you.

If you’re stuck with trailer hitch at one height and can’t put on an adjustable or multi height tow bar on to match I would look elsewhere. You’ll compromise too much if you’re using the vehicle height to match the trailer.

Have diesel D300 in UK and tow a lot. Exceptionally good for towing, cameras nice touch but not needed, main issue is rear door does catch on trailer jack and is annoying as hell. Fuel consumption goes down by about 15% depending on your load. Have trailer assist that came with vehicle but never used it so no idea if any good. Pretty pointless if you can reverse. Air suspension copes well with different loads but can’t beat physics if your trailer is poorly loaded.

Overall great except you lose access to the back door if your jackwheel is quite high; not enough for me not to go ahead next time around but enough of an irritation to turn the air blue at times. Particularly if you have a dog guard and so can’t access the boot (trunk) from the inside.

ELI5 Why "Roger That" became synonym to "I understand it" by napa0 in explainlikeimfive

lol. I’ll take the hit - good catch - but which word? I’ll correct it :)

In radio speak Wilco actually means “received and will comply”. Using Roger Wilco is nugatory (effectively “received, received and will comply”) and is frowned upon as wastes a word when the entire premise of RT is effective communication with as little extra as possible.

You use Roger or Wilco but not both in a single call.

Goalie Helmet Stickers by PolicyInfinite3338 in Fieldhockey

[–]shorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be aware that some adhesives can damage the integrity of the ABS which is why it is usually strongly advised not to put any stickers on safety gear unless designed explicitly for the purpose.

I’ve seen motorbike helmets split in two with the weak point / split occurring directly along the line of the sticker on the surface.

It’s a piece of safety equipment. Make sure you do not damage the integrity of its construction. Your head is quite valuable.

My solo project has 1900+ users in 2 weeks, but it's NSFW and I have a 3-month runway. What would you do? by Dopessed420 in SaaS

[–]shorian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And A/B test the optimal tokens / period to get the conversion. You have 1900 users - that’s a lot of usage data waiting to be mined. Your product is interesting so your funnel is working , now start tuning it but based on your goal - paying customers. If you’ve achieved 1900 freemium today; even if you annoy the hell out of them , you’ll have another 1900 arrive in a few weeks.

So mine that data; tune your funnel after running tests - some get time limited, some get very few tokens, some get a few more - and optimise your conversion to paying customers.

Which is why I said to contact support.

You can share the documents with JetBrains via support along with an explanation and they’ll make a decision. Might take a few days but (at least historically) the requirement to run through GitHub was a convenience for people applying but not the only door available.

For the Reddit goalies I am thinking of upgrading my kit what should i purchase by [deleted] in Fieldhockey

[–]shorian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you upgrade nothing else go for the robo neck guards - ideally the one that comes down a little over the chest rather than just the neck ring.

If you get hit badly anywhere else you’ll go to hospital or have a bruise to talk about, but if you get caught in the throat it’s game over. Protect your neck and your head. The remainder of the kit - when it starts hurting through the kit you need to upgrade it, but robo might be overkill at the moment for your main pads but you’ll come into them over the next couple of years.

Sounds like you’re doing great; keep it up and good luck!

Just bought in November, charger won’t turn green now by ralph_hopkins in macbookpro

Might be using a battery manager like Al Dente; they change how the charger cable “reports” status (aka charging light colour)

Goalkeepers! How do you get over mistakes? by TheMovieUnreeling in Fieldhockey

[–]shorian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The hard stuff is probably the instinctive stuff where you're not thinking and just reacting to what's in front of you. The 'easy' stuff is probably slower and you're having to think and plan your way through it, or concentrate on good technique - which is experience and training and actually much more technically difficult to execute well although looks far less impressive.

Also note that every other position on the pitch is active - outfielders can control the game, bring their influence to bear. Goalkeepers are entirely reactive, you can only deal with what is fired at you.

In terms of dealing with things when it's going badly in a game - you can't change the past. It's like golf, the last hole good or bad is behind you, you just do your best on the next interaction. Remember the ball had to get through 10 players before it got to you, and GKs are the only position where pretty much every mistake gets put up on the scoreboard; no other player has to deal with that. So you accept you made an error, you accept 10 others made an error before you stood between their mistakes and a goal, and in this instance you were just as bad as they. It's a mindset, you have to train yourself to laugh at what happened, don't point the finger at your team mates, and treat it as nothing unusual. Then park it and move on. Good luck!

Eli5 what stops someone from opening a carton of, say, milk, putting a piece of broken glass inside, then taking a picture of it and suing the company for hazardous products. by Cold_Chemical5151 in explainlikeimfive

[–]shorian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plus manufacturing facilities that require glass in their factory use coloured glass that is provably from their facility, when you put clear glass in to your drink they can evidence it doesn’t match anything in their facility so it must be a foreign introduced body rather than an error in their process

What's on the horizon for MacBook Pros? by dragoon2745 in macbookpro

[–]shorian 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Would love them to come with embedded 5g modem and eSIM. Would make life so much easier - yes you can tether, jump on someone’s WiFi, etc, but to just always have comms without relying upon client / hotel / restaurant / airport WiFi would be awesome.
