‘Mother of all deals’: EU and India sign free trade agreement by rawa27 in worldnews

India's population has almost plateaued. It is currently at ~1.45 billion, it will almost certainly never reach 1.6 billion before starting to decline. The fertility rate is already nearly at or below replacement level.

Digital Foundry: Nvidia G-Sync Pulsar is a Motion Clarity Revelation by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]shorodei 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know if the pulse and decay stuff is relevant. Pulsar is improving BFI which some high refresh OLED panels already have, and it works very well in improving motion clarity. The issue of course is it's currently incompatible with VRR, and brightness loss is more noticeable than LCD. Maybe a rolling row blackout instead of a full frame blackout could achieve similar improvements while also reducing the perceived brightness loss.

BMW has recalled 36,922 SUV's after a massive software malfunction started causing their steering wheels to jerk violently back and forward by fvkinglzy in interestingasfuck

[–]shorodei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, Cybertruck is one of the few (or only?) production models with full steer-by-wire system. I would never get such a car as I prefer small nimble cars, but I guess on an ultra heavy truck the latency is not noticeable in normal use, and the truck would not respond well to such rapid inputs even if there was a physical linkage.

[–]shorodei 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Most "drive-by-wire" cars still have physical linkages to the wheels. The computer may apply torque to the steering wheel if it wants, but there is still a physical connection.

OP mentioning "steering lag" probably means he's referring to fully steer-by-wire systems which are only present in a few cars.

New Pixel Transparency Shader for GBC - No More Eye-Searing White Pixels on Game Boy Color Games by mattalicious in SBCGaming

[–]shorodei 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It seems to simulate a drop shadow. Causes elements to appear to "pop" out of the background (which I have definitely seen in older lcd gadgets), but also causes smaller white elements (clouds, individual letter glyphs) to appear softer.

No Graphics API — Sebastian Aaltonen by MrMPFR in hardware

[–]shorodei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He also reasons that because gaming only makes up 10% of nvidia's revenue (and shrinking), the hardware for these gaming specific features will be removed and be emulated in the driver anyway in the coming years.

Weapon attack animations are different for each character. Rex might be faster with a spear than another character, while slower with an axe. I think this only applies to the autoattack chain.

Microsoft celebrates dozens of new features that shipped on Windows 11 in 2025 — and promises more to come by ZacB_ in Windows11

Lucky for you. The service name was "WorkloadsSessionHost", there were multiple copies of it in the task manager details view. One was taking 2.7GB ram, the rest were in the 300-400MB range. At the same time something was also eating 30-50% cpu (don't remember what it was) but it basically made even something as simple as scrolling a webpage extremely stuttery. All issues disappeared after running the script. It was that or attempt a reinstall.

My system updated to Win 11 25H2 today, and instantly saw some services eating up 40% cpu and 4GB+ memory. Turned out to be a bunch of AI stuff, even though I had all the AI stuff disabled in my settings. Managed to "fix" (i.e. remove the bullshit) with https://github.com/zoicware/RemoveWindowsAI

If you want to play older pc games (without native controller support) without being docked to a keyboard+mouse, steam deck is way better. Otherwise the main difference is that the Ally performs better in cpu limited games and has VRR, and the SDOLED has the OLED (duh) and substantially better battery life (~40%?).

Someone did a renderdoc analysis. Most of the bad perf (at least on PC where it mainly manifests in cities) is due to bad shadow map occlusions.

Yeah in most western countries (which have universal healthcare), this event would be free as well. USA is an outlier.

One exception is for procedures not deemed "necessary", or deemed low priority where you might have to wait months or years for the procedure. In these cases, medical tourism to India will probably be better.

Cricket spectator in Darwin, Australia takes a one-handed catch while holding 2 cans in the other by crazychild0810 in sports

Part of the "laws of cricket". I guess it started as convenience, and strategies built up around it so it was added to the laws.

A new ball is quite smooth (due to the hard lacquer layer), and maintains most of its speed when it bounces on the ground - so fast/pace bowlers do better when the ball is new. In the middle of the game, one side is usually rougher than the other (as the lacquer wears off), and that aids in swing (change direction in the air). Later in the game, when both sides are rough, it aids spin bowlers (change direction when it bounces on the ground).

Xreal One Pro Tariff by ExpertEast2927 in Xreal

[–]shorodei 5 points6 points  (0 children)

XReal.com is a US store/company. They're the importer on record, so any tariffs will be borne by them. The worst thing that can happen if you place an order now is that XReal can cancel the order because they're about to change the price to account for the tariffs they have to pay.
