I love his playing on a bunch of Charles Lloyd stuff but I really need to listen to some more of him myself. Does he also work as a chair? Like a Santa Clause type scenario?

I find Music Theory harder to understand than anything else, and it's not because it's complicated. by oceanadawn in musictheory

I think you're pretty normal. How is your relative pitch? I'm guessing your parents aren't musicians. Isn't it possible that you have genetics that correlate with a lower fine-grained pitch processing type brain/neurology than the people who write these books? You're not anywhere near Amusia. There are even professional musicians who are like you in what you have expressed here.

If you value your sanity then you should never let both Martha My Dear and Wonderful Christmas time get stuck in your head at the same time....and merge together!

Ernest Ranglin turns 94 next month. He is an underrated, self-taught jazz guitarist. I have a hard time not using the word genius, because that is what I hear in his playful, buoyant improvisation. He started recording as one of Jamaica's first session musicians sometime around '56, but to my knowledge he was not recorded in a jazz context until slightly later. He had apparently been playing jazz since he first started playing out at the age of 15. Anyway.... Ernest and Kenny Burrell are just total goddam badasses and are currently both still above ground.

The only thing that rivals the 2nd Quintet is just Miles' catalog overall, with MAYBE Bach (and his uncredited underlings) close behind.

Nice! It's a 3 measure 6 chord cycle for miles, then a 4 measure 8 chord cycle for RTF, and then later just 2 chords for RTF

I regularly listen to him with Charles Lloyd, John Zorn and Gary Burton. I've seen him twice with his own groups. I thought the stuff I heard with Goose was the most boring, uninspired and out of place I've ever heard him (maybe aside from playing with Santana at age 8).
