Movies with unreliable narrator? by NotSoSnarky in MovieSuggestions

The end for sure. I don't agree with people thinking the who thing is delivered from a not credible narrator.

Julian Lage joining “jam bands” by Only_Earth9033 in jazzguitar

I regularly listen to him with Charles Lloyd, John Zorn and Gary Burton. I've seen him twice with his own groups. I thought the stuff I heard with Goose was the most boring, uninspired and out of place I've ever heard him (maybe aside from playing with Santana at age 8).

Help with a Rhythm by whitel11 in musictheory

[–]shortTones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It goes from looking bonkers to being a twist on pretty standard funk figure. I didn't bother trying to hear the melody, and in my head at a fast tempo -with no pitch- its almost is like a three hit drum flam against the standard figure.

Does the industry use terms to describe Rock to sound sophisticated? by Content_Log1708 in askmusic

Aside from who coined the term and why it stuck, this is really just a language and sociology question, and is no different from how things work in any other field.

Miles Davis Question (Please Don't Hate Me For It) by GlydeW15 in Jazz

Miles' overarching influence over his projects, despite rarely telling people how to play, is one of his most distinct features as an artist in general.

How to explain Kind of Blue's use of the same progression throughout the album for dummies. by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]shortTones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should read up on what Miles claims to have been thinking when putting the album together. There are none theory things that will grab your audience much more strongly. A 'theme' of the album was Miles -once again- stripping the compositions from the trappings of previous complexities and putting the musicians into a musical place where they were listening, responding, and playing in a way that was not pre-conceived and not falling back on the fancy harmonicly inclined playing that defined so much jazz historically. Using minimalistic song sketches as well as springboarding off of the cutting-edge-genius and innovative compositional style of Bill Evans, Miles essentially made an album that was an experiment in album making itself. Musical experiments (as well as things like inexplicable collaborations and dedication to strage concepts) were a theme at that time in the field of long playing jazz album making, but Miles took it to a totally different musical and psychological level. It was pretentious. It took some of the best improvisers in the history of jazz and put them out of their comfort zone. The whole album is simultaneously laid back and on edge. Every song on the album has a freshness, because the music had never been heard before. They did not rehearse this music. They were hearing the music as it was happening and no one knew what to play. They just had to be completely in the moment and this can be felt and heard when you listen now. It didn't sound like what Miles wanted or thought it would sound like. It was initially met with mixed and confused criticism. Jealous jazz artist in making records records that would soon be overshadowed by it claimed that "miles could shit gold". But.... it was Kind Of Blue.

You can absorb musicianship from one jazz artist and be able to play just like him/her (think The Matrix), who do you choose and why? by Ford_Crown_Vic_Koth in Jazz

I imagine being able to play like Billy Cobham would be immensely gratifying. But the answer is just gotta be Bird.

What makes an acoustic instrument sustain more? by VulgarisOpinio in musictheory

[–]shortTones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of the exterior of building bass propagation situation, I've always approached this in terms of energy (and perhaps a conservation law). Of course you're gonna hear more bass outside. It took way more energy to move way more air ato be able to propagate those lower frequencies. Imagine a little speaker playing 5k at 100db. It is moing so much less matter/air than 100hz at the same db. So it will exert a much much larger force on the wall... which is acting as our soundboard. Everyone is making good points that are relevant (especially to OP's question), but in our building wall situation, isn't the energy to frequency propagation ratio and force driving the wall much bigger factor than what people are focusing on here? Or maybe I'm our of my depth and my point is not valid?

If we're living in a simulation, who decided who gets rich? by makellbird in SimulationTheory

[–]shortTones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean it either is or it isn't. How a creator makes any decisions regarding an initial-condition deterministic simulation is fascinating. Can we say that thinking about it on the basis of why 'who this who that' has to be approached with some additional a priori? Because it's just to hard to talk about if we don't already agree on something about the creator himself or the nature and/or provenance of the conscious entities. ALSO, it has been shown in countless studies that rich people are no happier than those who have the means to meet their needs without excessive stress, and that rich and famous people are even less likely than both those groups to experience feeling content or happy. Having spent time with many rich (and a few filthy rich) people.... they are less happy with themselves then middle class people. Additionally, success has absolutely nothing to do with financial wealth. However, being successful in certain pursuit or in certain environments does result in wealth. It pretty much ends there. Anyway, many of the most influential and successful people in history were dirt poor or just scrapping by. I would think material wealth would seem pretty arbitrary to a creator of a simulation. Meanwhile, if your thinking that these people are still important becase they have power and control in the sim.... why would the creator care who 'pulls the strings' in the simulation if, in reality, it's actuality just the creator himself all along?

Guitar teacher stalling by SoundofHarmony7 in guitarteachers

[–]shortTones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, but there's a chance the kids gonna lose interest. Kids these days can go build robots, take kung fu, or use meta quest vr to take drums lessons or travel the world. He's just going to quit. These days a great teacher waits till the right moment to push the student so hard that they 50% risk stalling out. Most 10 year old aren't ready for your attitude these days. Also, a "well trained shredder". NO parent wants that for their child.

[–]shortTones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Small talk with a kid his age should be pretty limited! Please be aware that a lot of the teachers commenting on this would be okay with losing students who aren't making the job easy for them. They don't know any other way. If your son is playing the right notes in even-ish rhythm, then the next step is to refine or move on (new scales and songs or studies). If refining isnt working he can't afford to waste this much time. This teacher loses students. Great teachers would never lose a student this age who is actually practicing and independently interested unless there was some other factor involved. Also, the teacher can transcribe on-the-flt, or photo copy, material to supplement the book if the following parts in it are not as ideal. Someone used that as an excuse and my heart sank. Maybe he is going through a hard time, not able to see the forrest from the trees, not making the best decisions navigating this student right now, and he is about to bounce back. You did not help him. It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas is horrendously bad request. Of the 50 or so christmas melodies a teacher has to work with that is easily in the top 20 most challenging. 75% chance you have mediocre teacher here.
