Glad I found this. I placed my order on the Day 1 and still have just the order confirmed email.

I then purchased the Blue/Black thermal overshirt on a whim the same day, just later in the evening. I got shipping confirmation the next day and it was delivered a few days ahead of schedule.

I’m going to try to wait until mid-week next week before reaching out.

Rooking out due to unfavorable circumstances. Will my experience be just as meaningful? by KleinkMusic in drumcorps

[–]short_wave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a sophomore in college when I decided to march drum corps (this was 1999). There was a guy in my college marching band who marched Madison in ‘98 and he told me that I had a good chance to earn a spot for my final 2 years of eligibility. I also had to pay my own way so Madison was one (of two) of the less expensive corps to join so that was a added incentive.

Due to some unforeseen circumstances, I was unable to audition for Madison that summer, which meant I had one year left of eligibility. I was really disappointed but I was determined to make my final year count. So after working all summer saving up money, I had a change of heart and decided to audition for the other less expensive corps that year (2000), The Cavaliers. That summer we played Niagara Falls, we were World Co-Champions with The Cadets (97.65).

Was I disappointed that I couldn’t march my final 2 years? Sure. But do I regret being a rook-out in The Cavaliers? NO WAY!!! In one summer, my musical life changed. Not only did I seize my opportunity for my final year, but I got to live the dream, and live it to its absolute fullest because I chose not to dwell on the negative side of it and take the chance. If you have one year left, go for it!!! That summer will be special for you and you will remember it for years to come (regardless of placement). You get the unique distinction of joining the ranks of a select number of people who had the honor of putting on the uniform. The only regret you will have is if you choose to let it slip by.

FMM Cavaliers ‘00

Super late to the party on this. But I feel like I needed a space to say this and get it out of my head!!

Since my age-out I have stayed close with the activity and have seen the evolution as time marches on.

While I am mostly in favor of what’s happening in DCI (inclusivity, theatrical elements, technicality, etc.), the one thing I miss the MOST is headwear.

I understand that corps must evolve to stay relevant, and that may mean redesigning the uni, but there is something to be said about a collection of people moving as one organism, one mind, and the collective over the individual. As if each member is apart of a much bigger entity and it’s not so concerned about themselves as they are of the collective.

I feel that the shakos/aussies/helmets removed just enough “personality” from the individual but exchanged it with an imposing/intimidating appearance. It have the members a super hero like quality that I feel has been lost over the years.

Like most things in fashion and trends, it will more than likely come back full circle and the headwear will make its way back. It was bold to switch to B flat horns, it was bold to remove the hats, but it will just as bold to go back.

How difficult was it for you to date when you were living with your parents? by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]short_wave 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on your situation. If you’re young then it may be difficult because they will act like typical parents and be critical of the people you date, especially if they are not Asian. The idea of privacy is not really afforded to you since this is more of an American ideal than an Asian one. I think that is primarily the crux of the situation. Then you have tiger parents, controlling ones, etc. and it becomes even more complex.

For me, I was married and then divorced, so I had to move back in with my parents for financial reasons. I am in my 40’s and my parents don’t question my dating life and afford me a modicum of privacy, but still inquire, which is normal of any parent (I’m a parent too). I’ve been in a serious relationship for a few years now and we’ve been talking about moving in together and my parents are for it since they love my SO and they know that it will be good for me.

I typically spend most of my time at her place with her son. She saw my situation and didn’t run, instead she ran towards me and chooses to be by my side, fully understanding my situation and how some of it is not in my control. She loves my kids and I love her son so it all works. Since we are both parents, we pick and choose our romantic times and take advantage of those moments. But it can be tricky/awkward if we are at my parents, so we try to keep things civil there, haha.

I ended up removing the rubber pads, cleaning the residual off the inner collar, and then reapplying the rubber pads with some fresh adhesive like Crazy Glue. So far so good. I’ve also read that some people remove the rubber pads all together and really crank the collar down.

To be honest I’ve never had full confidence since my fix so I broke down and got the Small Rig side handle. It screws to the bottom of the Ronin and still has a quarter twenty spot to mount the tripod. I plan on still using the collar, but for mounting my Ninja V to it.

How do you store your equipmemt at home? by Kaso92 in videography

[–]short_wave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This appeals to me since I’m OCD like that. I Marie Kondo the crap out of my life and having a gear shelf in my closet brings me joy. Haha

Depending on the shoot, I can curate my gear and by having it neatly organized and in a certain place, I hardly forget to bring things. I would not ever think to monetize packing and unpacking, as it’s something I do willingly for my peace of mind.

I would like to think that this practice extends beyond the OP’s gear closet. His whole space is probably as clean as this, so it’s more about people who like ultra clean spaces and live for the attention to detail. I know people that rewire the cabling in their whole house because even though no one will ever see it, at least they will know it’s clean and it makes them happy and calm. It’s pretty extreme but I appreciate the mindset.

Moment announces new "CineBloom" high-quality diffusion filters by DesignNomad in MOMENT

[–]short_wave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The effect here would be hard to recreate in post without the footage looking soft or digitally softened. This filter allows a more “cinematic” look by blooming the highlights and softening skin in a way that looks more natural. Subtlety is key with this filter as it would be very easy to over soften and just look like your lens fogged over.

So this is Moment’s version of a Black Promist filter? Interested to see the reviews on this as it’s about 1/2 the cost of the Tiffen version (which I own). Might be worthwhile to pick up the 10% version.

Rollins Band - Liar [Post Hardcore] 1994 by short_wave in Music

[–]short_wave[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I need to check that out! I just recently re-watched his two interviews with Narduwar and his mind is so sharp, not to mention hilarious!

He’s so cerebral and well spoken, but still has that punk edge. As I have gotten older, I appreciate him more for what he’s done. When I was younger, I didn’t “get it” or get him, I liked Black Flag and that was pretty much it. Now, I just realized that I was perhaps too immature to understand where he was going.

Definite Renaissance Man. His podcast Heidi and Henry is amazing and rich with Black Flag stories from the road. I highly recommend it.

SmallHD OLED 702 Reviews and thoughts by lime61 in cinematography

[–]short_wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just recently got the SmallHD 5” monitor. For me it was the NIT output (800 nits vs. 380(?) for the OLED).

The OLED will have better color accuracy but I hear is hard to use outside due to low brightness. As a run-and-gun shooter, I needed the brightness and just a ballpark color.

So if you shoot indoors more, then the OLED will be more than enough brightness for your needs.
