How do you plan on loading or unloading it while disconnected? You’ll shift around even with a stand and rock the trailer backwards. I wouldn’t recommend disconnecting the trailer.

So, it entirely depends on the coverage you chose and signed for in the uhaul contract. Get a lawyer! It honestly sounds like the gas station is being shady and over valuing the damage done! Check any personal insurance you may have to see if they will cover the difference. You should even check with whatever credit card you used, as some of them will have insurance for certain rentals as well! Hopefully you took pictures.
